So far today, Harry Houdini's War and Tartarus - very pleased and impressed with both stories - and another listen to The Dalek Trap, just because I've really missed Lucie and it's so good to have her back. I sort of wish there was a little more of The Doctor in this one, but still it's very nice that Lucie gets so much of the spotlight in the opening story.

After last nights very Freaky Ravenous Nightmare something less devouring i think tonight . Will stick with McGann-Seasons of Fear maybe i will dream of time jumping all over the place instead of being eaten alive while constantly regenerating in a room full of corpses. 🙏 Well, other opportunities for nightmares there: some great torture scenes. And of course the 8th Doctor shirtless scenes (although that might be just the opposite of a nightmare ) Plus, my absolute favorite bit: „Do they have orgies?“ - „ Charlotte Pollard!“ I love seasons of fear. Hey, me thinks you’ve analysed the episodes a little TOO much . 🤪

Re-listens for Gallery of Ghouls from the 4DAs and Dark Shadows The Creeping Fog. I don't know how many times I've heard The Creeping Fog now (eight?) and it still makes hairs stand on end.

Nah, totally innocent here.

Yes a great Dark Shadows tale but then again i find them all good.Selby though should be in Doctor Who he’d make quite a villain.

The Spectre of Lanyon Moor
You know, looking back over the first nine MR releases, it's impressive how quickly BF established itself as a real successor to the classic series. Three doctors, four companions and now the dear ol' Brig, all played by their original actors. Plus Daleks and Ice Warriors. Plus a wealth of very interesting new ideas. I miss Nick Courtney. He had such a wonderful voice for audio. I'm glad we have some releases with him at Big Finish, at least. Between this and Whispers of Terror, I have to say that Sixie works well with spooky stories. It just seems to fit Colin. I really think the biggest thing missing from Who during his tenure was atmosphere. Speaking of Colin, I damn near cheered out loud when he told off Professor Morgan. How many hundreds of completely unreasonable authority figures have we had to put up with throughout the history of Doctor Who? It's so satisfying to hear the Doctor just go off on one. I love that Evelyn is totally game for a bit of B&E. It's fantastic to have Colin and the Brig together at last, and they're given quite a good script to do it with. Yes, it's about space goblins, but damn if it ain't moody. And yet, in a way, it's extremely cozy. Feels like Doctor Who comfort food without being too much of a rehash. Very good indeed. {Spoiler} I was kind of surprised by the Crowley stuff. Also the dogs turning on Mrs Moynahan at the end there is really frakkin grisly.
It is one of my favourites and searched to get it on Cd and managed eventually for a dirt cheap new copy. Its got it all someone said you could transplant any Doctor into the tale but for me it will always be Colin and Evelyn’s team and it was nice to have Susan and James together in it Memories of the two from When The Boat Comes In

Going to try and get through Winter for the Adept (after Donny v Blackpool on the radio) I'm quite enjoying this (about 40 mins in) but it does have terrible sound design. The music just starts and ends abruptly, and is anything but subtle.

Finished off series 5 of Gallifrey this afternoon and on a cliffhanger to boot!
So before I dive headfirst into series 6 I'm switching ranges and stepping back into the Monthly Adventures for a bit...starting with yet another relisten to The Church And The Crown. 😊

Winter for the Adept
How odd that the 5 & Nyssa pairing wound up with two snowy adventures in a row. This one is better than the mess that is Land of the Dead, but it's still pretty mediocre. A snowed-in, haunted boarding school is a much better and more evocative setting to me than whatsisface and his wacky Resident Evil mansion. The sound design in general gets the feeling of winter just right, both indoors and out. I get a kick out of Mrs Tremayne and her fixation on demons and dirty men. Overall, though besides Harding the guest cast doesn't do much for me, and that includes India Fisher. I love Charley, but Peril, not so much. Also this story has a ton of very clumsy dialogue that exists solely to explain what's happening that we can't see. Even at this early juncture, BF is usually much more elegant in painting their pictures than that. Hell, they opened with narration and didn't use it again until the very end. If you must tell me in words what's going on, why not use the device you already introduced, for heaven's sake? Fine enough but not great. I just kind of wish we'd been able to stay in ghost story mode for the duration instead of shifting into more standard Doctor Who fare. {Spoiler} I like the daisy-chain approach to the supernatural goings-on. It's kind of silly but in a good way. And I very much enjoy that yes, there is a ghost, but he's not the villain.

The Chimes of Midnight
A creepy story that fully deserves its place as one of the highlights of Big Finish’s Doctor Who.
