Feeling slightly inspired by Polly and her early Main Range first-time listen thru, I'm revisiting 'Red Dawn'...another one I've never finished! Tonight, either Shadow of the Scourge or The Apocalypse Element. Finished 'Red Dawn' which I quite enjoyed, despite not being a big fan of the Ice Warriors. A good 6 out of 10.

Beyond the Sun
I had completely forgotten this one. And with good reason, it's pretty forgettable. I suppose it does introduce Jason to the audios, and the interplay between him and Benny is by far the best part of this story. Because the rest of it is about ancient superweapons and awkward offers for sex.
Also the two kids Benny is stuck with are awful. Every line out of their mouths is a total howler.
The direction, too is really not up to BF's standards. Sound effects are very sparse and there's jarring shifts from once scene to the next. I know it's early goings, but Oh No It Isn't was much better than this, technically speaking.
Very dull indeed. Please get better Benny. Good god.

More than I ever wanted to know about Benny. Thanks for the detailed summary. I was aware of Benny's past companion status going in, but beyond that nothing. So it was a very weird experience first time round! Like I said, I think BF just assumed anyone buying the CD had read the books already. I will definitely be checking out more. I'd been holding my breath the last couple years hoping for the download rights to be secured but alas... Big Finish used to have an excellent deal on a series 1-7 bundle of Benny CDs. It was not a small amount of money, but it was a huge savings in terms of price per CD. So I bit the bullet and bought it. Note this was before older Benny releases were permanently reduced and before increased shipping charges and per order charges. I gleaned a lot of Benny backstory from reading stuff online, also.

Seasons of Fear
A very fun story, with a very well characterised villain at its heart. Plus what is still one of the oddest classic villain twists ever.

After a long walk in the Derbyshire Peaks and the lovely autumnal sunshine, I'm going to give 'Spaceport Fear' another go.

Re-listens for The Wrong Doctors (timey-wimey, historically relevant to the series, and fun - what more could you ask for?) and Lords of the Red Planet (must have finally got to pay attention to this for once, that was really a good Ice Warriors story and quite well done, too).

After a long walk in the Derbyshire Peaks and the lovely autumnal sunshine, I'm going to give 'Spaceport Fear' another go. I liked that one.. For me, Ronald Pickup sells the story (he has a fantastic voice that is well suited for audio). The concept is also quite interesting and amusing (although the joke does wear a bit thin after a while). Has a darker undertone to it as well - divisions of social classes and the extent to which order can break down in society.

The Wrong Doctors is just amazing... Really great and totally echo your thoughts on that one. Baker playing 2 versions of Sixie is mind-boggling brilliant...

Finished off series 5 of Gallifrey this afternoon and on a cliffhanger to boot! So before I dive headfirst into series 6 I'm switching ranges and stepping back into the Monthly Adventures for a bit...starting with yet another relisten to The Church And The Crown. 😊 In the past couple of days I finished off The Church And The Crown again (a fun story that doesn't take itself too seriously), bypassed Bang Bang A Boom! (One relisten in the summer was quite enough..), dived into Jubilee once more (Colin and Maggie showing off their acting chops..what's not to love?), avoided Nekromanteia (even Big Finish are not immune to producing an absolute Turkey.. ) and sidestepped The Dark Flame (As I never got into the Virgin New Adventures books when they were released I struggled with the characterisation in this and The Shadow Of The Scourge the first time around..). Which means I've now reached the first of the monthly adventures titles that I have never actually listened to in it's entirety before. Except of course for that one well known clip on Youtube.. So avast mateys! Time to step aboard the good ship Sea Eagle..😊

The Spectre of Lanyon Moor
You know, looking back over the first nine MR releases, it's impressive how quickly BF established itself as a real successor to the classic series. Three doctors, four companions and now the dear ol' Brig, all played by their original actors. Plus Daleks and Ice Warriors. Plus a wealth of very interesting new ideas. I miss Nick Courtney. He had such a wonderful voice for audio. I'm glad we have some releases with him at Big Finish, at least. Between this and Whispers of Terror, I have to say that Sixie works well with spooky stories. It just seems to fit Colin. I really think the biggest thing missing from Who during his tenure was atmosphere. Speaking of Colin, I damn near cheered out loud when he told off Professor Morgan. How many hundreds of completely unreasonable authority figures have we had to put up with throughout the history of Doctor Who? It's so satisfying to hear the Doctor just go off on one. I love that Evelyn is totally game for a bit of B&E. It's fantastic to have Colin and the Brig together at last, and they're given quite a good script to do it with. Yes, it's about space goblins, but damn if it ain't moody. And yet, in a way, it's extremely cozy. Feels like Doctor Who comfort food without being too much of a rehash. Very good indeed. {Spoiler} I was kind of surprised by the Crowley stuff. Also the dogs turning on Mrs Moynahan at the end there is really frakkin grisly Another great gem from the early years of BF. Baker certainly took the crown as 'best Doctor' for me and this story is a sad indictment of 'what' could have been had the Eighties production team handled his tenure more appropriately. Although designed for Tom Baker (Pertwee would have been a better fit), Baker is excellent in this and whilst he shows the brash characteristics of his TV persona, these are reigned in and he comes across as a great Doctor. The 1970s theme tune also helps this. James Bolam is great as a guest star and Stables feels like she has been playing Evelyn forever. It was nice to see the Brig back and being given something to do. Not sure if the time period really is the 1990s (House of Lords reform is mentioned - so that is 1999?) as it has more of a 1970s vibe to it. Just shows how the Hinchcliffe-Holmes genre is still as applicable to other Doctors...

Well ELA has pretty much summed up the Oh No IT isn’t- I will say i knew Benny briefly.I was very much a snobby if it wasn’t on the Telly it wasn’t Canon type of guy.I had a few brief forays into the New Adventures. But now more important-FARSCAPE on audio-i would certainly buy to hear that gang knock a few out!!! Farscape on audio would be great! Worth it just for the voice of Claudia Black... She was great in SG1: Shell Game for Big Finish (I'm still trying to find Stargate season 3)

Farscape on audio would be great! Worth it just for the voice of Claudia Black... And Ben that boy can do drama the closing scenes to Peacekeeper wars still sends chills down my back and I replayed it recently to some friends His Weapons do not make peace...... is I think a must for all would be politicians in the world they should be forced to watch it I got a nice, warm feeling seeing his cameo in Guardians of the Galaxy, Vol. 2. Always good to see Moya's crew are still popping up from time to time. Virginia Hey in White Ghosts for the 4DAs, Gigi Edgley in Star Trek: Continues... All things considered, I'm a bit surprised we haven't had another appearance from Claudia Black since the SG-1 audios. Particularly given just how prolific she's become as a voice actor. I mean... I say that knowing that a personal VA dream team would be Claudia Black and Ashly Birch for the sheer anarchy that would cause:
