Harry Houdini's War
Cracking conclusion to the Sixie/Peri trilogy with a story that's part Who and part 'Biggles' with its aerial 'dogfights' and a dastardly WWI German colonel up to no good! While other Germans wrestle with their consciences as we'd expect in Who - even in wartime is it 'their country right or wrong' or do they need to look beyond that? Houdini was an excellent guest character to build this story around and there's a {Spoiler} HUGE twist of such epic hugeness I won't even reveal it in the spoiler but oh my goodness I didn't see that coming!
It's been an excellent trilogy and I'd like the Doctor to meet up with Harry Houdini again for BF sometime.

More Year of the Pig for me today ... What do you think of Year of the Pig?š·I like that story, but I will admit itās a bit of an odd onešš¤ Mixed views. On the plus I really admire the bizarreness of it and the storytelling. Excellent voice cast too. But itās so incredibly talky, and I found it rather hard to listen to. Had to listen to it in small bursts. And Iām not sure I want to listen to it again. But yes, thumbs up, albeit with reservations.

Started on UNIT Cyber- Reality. Interesting so far, although nothing mind-blowing. Osgood continues to be my favorite character in the setting.

Outstanding, claustrophobic, ultra-dark psychological thriller. A triumph from Joe Lidster and the tiny, brilliant cast. What treasures I've found on my journey through the first 50, from outright comedies to stories like this one. My goodness BF were daring in those early days!
And next...
'Zagreus' lives upon CD
'Zagreus', discs are 1,2,3 'Zagreus' lies in wait for me...
A tale I'll soon be meeting!

āThe Shoutā A BBC radio adaptation from 1986 of the Robert Graves short story. Gripping stuff with a great performance from David Suchet as the malicious Charles Crossley and an appearance from Geoffrey Beevers.

Doctor Who Lost Story - The Nightmare Country.
This really has become one of my favourite releases of the year. A good, intriguing story with some great eccentric moments and strong characters. Plenty of good stuff for the regulars too, including some effective pathos for Tegan. With some of the concepts here, The Nightmare Country deserves more than one listen.
I can't see it happening, but if ever BF released a Steven Gallagher box-set, I'd snap it up with more certainty than a Gundan's handshake.

The Outliers
I know I've listened to this before, but I had absolutely no recollection of it. I enjoyed it! Creepy premise and some humor as well.

Absolution
Some imaginative imagery for Cārizzās sendoff. Some of the revelations towards the end do make the whole plot seem a bit trivial, and Iām still not entirely sure what the piece of technobabble at the end does to fix everything, but otherwise a decent ending.

Colditz
Another strong release. We're really on a roll lately. Going into this, I had imagined something more akin to Just War but after the revelation about Klein's origins, things took a very different and very interesting twist. I look forward to her (eventual) return. You know, between Erimem, the Forge, Klein, and Charley - plus Zagreus foreshadowing - Big Finish sure had a lot of intriguing pokers in the fire at this point.
There's something about the music in this one that sounds a bit off. While the compositions are fine in and of themselves, the instrumentation seems more obviously synthesized than usual. Not quite MIDI, but it does remind me of mid-90s PC games. Also, some of the echo effects used during dialogue within the castle doesn't really convey a sense of space. It's flat and just kind of distorts things and began to annoy me, because it's a pretty good script and I'd like to be able to listen to it in peace, consarnit.
Is this the origin of Ace going by McShane sometimes, or is that something the VNAs came up with? Sadly, Ace's characterization is my biggest gripe as far as the plot goes. I know she's tough, I like her moxie and all, but I was hoping for a little more nuance. She's given an awful lot of very one-note dialogue. Did you guys know that she doesn't like Nazis? Or that she takes no shit from anyone? You will by the end of this story.
That Kurtz guy sounds familiar...

I've never made it through Colditz simply because of the overbearing background, or rather foreground, music. It is far too loud and often which does my head in. A shame, because the ideas and set up are interesting.

āBurglars Bargainsā A 1979 BBC radio drama written by Wally K Daly. Best known amongst us lot I would imagine for penning āThe Ultimate Evilā
Stars Carry On regulars Charles Hawtrey and Bernard Bresslaw as a couple of crooks among a group of other esteemed actors such as the late Peter Jones and Donald Hewlett.
Very much in vein of the Ealing Film Comedies or to a lesser extent the Carry On films so itās worth a listen if youāre into that sort of thing.

TorchwoodCascade_etc (I thought it might be safer not to use the real name of this file, just in case... )
Another TW monthly range winner!, menacing 'ghost'/horror atmosphere of something coming (as an M.R.James fan I'm now thinking of it as 'Oh Listen, And I'll Come For You') Great use of the found-audio-footage storytelling style, excellently performed - and an amazing sound design by our DU friend Robert-T in this story where sound is a matter of life and death...

A shame, because the ideas and set up are interesting. Could I recommend giving it another go? Some of the sound design is definitely off, which is rare for a BF production - there was some comment about it at the time. But it has a very good ending, it has John from The Tomorrow People in it, and Kurtz's (whatever became of that actor?) final scene is very effective!

Totally love this tale one of the BF classics,a very dark tale but so good and I finally got a CD copy of it a while back so was real happy at that. It shows why Joe was so right for the Dark Shadows range

The Liberator Chronicles 5
5.1 Logic - a good story and entertaining, though overshadowed by the other releases in this volume
5.2 Risk Management - the setup for this story takes a long time, but the second half and the ending are very good. The story structure would have worked much better with a full cast rather than the two-handed format of the Chronicles.
5.3 Three - one of the best B7 stories you could get. It places the weight of the drama on hints and innuendo from Servalan, in a way that holds up to repeat listening. You never know quite where Servalan is headed, or how much of what she says is truth, and Jacqueline Pearce's strong performance infuses the whole story with a growing discomfort at being in close quarters with her character. This story definitely plays to the actors' strengths and makes good use of the format.
