A bit tipsy after the work Christmas doo, found a random no.18 bus that takes over an hour to get me to Hillsborough so why not sit back and relax, watch the lights of the city and revisit Bang-Bang-A-Boom!? You tell me, I'm all ears

Just finished ‘The Martian Invasion of Earth’ Aside from the title, this was a faithful and far more enjoyable adaptation of the classic H.G. Wells story then that awful and frankly dull BBC television series we had recently.
Performances are great although I will agree it does end rather abruptly.

There's some astonishingly good writing for post-Trial Sixie and the Cybermen in Killing Ground. The step-by-step documentation of cybernisation from the perspective of someone being converted is peerless ("My eyes have been scooped out and replaced with ruby ocular crystals."). Lyons had a fantastic understanding of why the Cybermen became the subject of people's awe and terror. The only thing I think they could improve with an adaptation is weaving the Sixth Doctor into a more active role in the events on Agora. I'd pay good money for that vitally important scene of him on the Cybership. Dangling from a cable and dying of radiation poisoning wondering if it'd be worth it to continue. It is a very good book and one of the few MAs that actually held my attention. It does focus on the real body horror and tragedy of the Cybermen, which has rarely been explored elsewhere. I agree that Sixie could be more involved here, but the idea of him trapped in a cell is probably an allegory for his era on the TV and what Saward/JNT did with the character. The ending is good - the Sixth Doctor wondering whether to give up, with the Seventh Doctor perhaps willing the incarnation to die so that he can take over. This would be a good adaption - Baker doing a 'dying Doctor bit' with McCoy whispering 'give up Doctor, let yourself go' (almost a reverse Androzani Regeneration). Sadly, as BF are moving away from adaptions, I doubt we will ever see it. Yeah, it does smack of allegory, and unfortunately that's also a product of the time it was written. I think only State of Change and Millennial Rites really give the Sixth Doctor centre stage all the way through. I've nothing to back this up, but Killing Ground is actually a pretty solid example of how to do a Sawardian era story with all the trimmings and none of the drawbacks. When Sixie does appear, Colin's voice is like crystal coming through the dialogue (with Paul Darrow as Madrox and Michael Keating as Ben Taggart, although that could just be me). Ooh... With the Valeyard's laugh underpinning their entire discussion. I like it. That's always an aspect of multi-Doctor interactions that's never been explored. I didn't really think about it until Daughter of the Gods recently. Any incarnation looking looking to the future gets hit with a memento mori. It's a walking, talking (often critical) exemplar that one day they will die. They don't know how, they don't know when, only that it will happen. For anyone looking to the past, it's a walking, talking (often critical) exemplar of every mistake you will make up until your current persona. And then they start criticising each other's shoes and it's on.

Horror of Glam Rock
On the second story of the EDAs, Paul Magrs immediately pushes the boat out into bizarre territory and it pays off. The characters come across strongly (Cribbins’ cold manager especially) and the Doctor and Lucie’s partnership has already found its feet.

‘Mission to Magnus’ A tale featuring Ice Warriors, the Doctor’s school bully, a literal gender war and finally Sil himself. From my description alone, it is safe to say that there are far too many disparate ideas in this one and not enough tying them together to make for a satisfying narrative. A damn shame.

Immortal Beloved
Another oddball story for the EDAs. The ideas are decent and the Doctor and Lucie get some good moments.

Just finished Project: Twilight and listened to Iris Wildthyme and Claws of Santa. Project:Twilight is quite gory and suspenseful. I have noticed it seems like a lot of Big Finish’s earlier offerings have a tendency to be particularly gruesome (but in a good way)😱I think a vampire laboratory and blood bank disguised as a casino is an interesting idea 🧛🏻♂️ 6 and Evelyn are in good form as always 😊 and I was glad Casie had a happy ending even after she became a vampire 🧛🏻♀️ ☺️
Iris Wildthyme and the Claws of Santa was prime silliness!😂🤪 I love Iris and Panda!🐼☺️ Does anyone else think ST58 sound like Stephen Merchant? I thought the ending was nice with Santa and Mary being young again☺️ which on a side note reminded me a bit of a particular story idea I had about 12 and Clara😉 I love how ever so slightly naughty Iris’s stories always get as well, whenever Iris and Panda are around a good night everybody or a nudge nudge say no more is just around the corner 😄😉

‘The Shadow Heart’ Have to say, I’m of mixed opinions when it comes to this one. I like the worldbuilding and McCoy’s performance but I’m afraid I wasn’t exactly in love with the rest of it. As much as I like Chase Masterson as an actress (Her performance in the excellent ‘Night of the Stormcrow’ for example) I wasn’t overly impressed with the character of Vienna Salvatori. She didn’t strike me as anything remarkable and to be honest, I still can’t fathom why she has her own spin-off series. I’d much rather have seen a comedic spin-off following the exploits of the salvage crew of Hercules the Solar Ammonite.
I’m more than happy to be proven wrong though as I will admit I have yet to give her series a go.

Retribution is basically a big explosive audio blockbuster.
Great if you are into that type of thing.
I myself was a bit hesitant to try the Vienna series out, but then I met Chase at a convention and she was just the most loveliest person and was so enthusiastic about Big Finish that I just HAD to try and I enjoyed myself.
Just don't expect Shakespeare.
However, I admit, I have not gotten around to listening to Shadow Heart yet.

Honestly, I’m more than happy to give it a chance and considering your practically glowing recommendation of it I’ll be sure to give it a go in the near future. 🙂 Might not be Shakespeare like you said, but sometimes you just want to have a bit of fun.

State of Bliss (TW 3.1)
It's amazing how a story that begins so intimately can open into. . . well. . . spoilers, to borrow a phrase.
I think an apt byline for the entire Time War series is "Well, that escalated quickly."

Time Tunnel with the amazing Katy Manning. Could listen to her all day. She is just great doing all the voices and does an impressive 3rd Doctor and Brig. Now I hope I can finish Blood on Santa’s Claw before I fall asleep.

The One Doctor
You just don't get the same effect on audio...
The first of the Big Finish Christmas releases! This reminded me a lot of the Voyager episode "Live Fast and Prosper" where there's a bunch of con artists impersonating the crew for profit. I don't seem to mix well with Big Finish comedy a lot of the time. It's a highly subjective genre. I did laugh out loud at the ersatz TARDIS' toilet sounds and the infinite shelves, but for the most part my reaction was mild amusement. I never found it annoying, thankfully. In fact, there's a pleasing sense of warm affection to all the various jokes at the Doctor's (and the franchise's) expense.
I thought it was interesting to pair Sixie up with Mel, since we hadn't had them together before. And given her lack of screentime alongside Sixie on the TV series, they can do whatever they like with her. I look forward to seeing how this team develops under more normal circumstances.
I like that the first time we get a different arrangement of the theme tune (besides the McGann one), it's that atrocious alternate Third Doctor version. That was a nice touch.
A good release that I enjoyed but didn't really love. I wanted to love it, since it seems to be a fan favorite, and I can't think of anything that's actually wrong with it. So I guess I'm too much of a grouch. I did have a few laughs, and I certainly liked it better than Oh No It Isn't, but I don't feel particularly strongly about it one way or the other. Upper end of mid-tier.
