Listened to Primord while I was at work today. First time in a long while I’ve listened to an audio drama, actually - I’ve been a bit burnt out as of late.
Must say, I’m just continually impressed with Third Doctor Adventures and just how perfectly they capture the Third Doctor’s TV era. Like the Early Adventures, it’s almost pitch perfect - it’s so easy to imagine these stories playing out onscreen I almost forget I’m only listening. Now that the range has its Brigadier, these stories feel more complete than ever - I look forward to every release in this range, no question.
Now, I really must rewatch The Three Doctors...

Yes I agree it’s a range I instantlyget and know am getting my money’s worth and constantly relistenable too.

Finished Third Doctor Vol. 1. This was great. Jo and Mike are used perfectly and the narration did not interrupt the flow of the story. Hardly noticed it was there. In my opinion, better than the second one. However, my favorite is still Vol. 4.

In my opinion, better than the second one. However, my favorite is still Vol. 4. It is a good set and Tim's 3rd Doctor is excellent (despite what some people have said). The sound design on Prisoners of the Lake - the ex-cav suit, the underwater scenes - is superb, and the narration is sparse and does not distract from the story.

‘The Abandoned’ Barmy. Just completely and utterly barmy. It’s nice to see the Fourth Doctor Adventures be more ‘out there’ for a change but I do feel like if the script had been tightened in places we would really have had something special.

I really love the concept behind this one. Script doesn't quite work but it's got some really great ideas in it. Also that cover is one of BF's best.

Lots of cricket today and a nice walk with the wife, but also The Darkness of Glass.
I hope we get some £2.99 early 4DA in today's 4th Doctor sale.

Finally made it to listen to the Mayfair Monster. Hmm. Well, it was okay for trying it out, but these Dorian Grey episodes just do not agree with me. It is too maliciously dark, the lead is too misanthropic and egotistical and I find him utterly unlikeable. This is different to other villain protagonists like the Master, where at least some fun is to be had. But Dorian Grey is like the first War Master set dialled up a notch, and I had already problems listening to the first War Master set (as brilliant as it was). The Mayfair Monster was redeemed a little bit by Colin and the character he was playing. He added a lot of warmth and a bit of humor. Without him, I think the whole affair would have been just a depressing exercise in self-pity. Honestly, how anyone can listen to a character who constantly tries out the most inventive methods of suicide without getting dragged down themselves is beyond me.
I also started on Gallifrey IV, but fell asleep halfway through the first episode... but it is interesting so far. I like Mirror Universe stories. Hopefully will find out tonight now it ends.

As someone who has listened to Dorian Gray in full twice.. All I will say is... "Character Development".. long term storytelling.. It's 1 of my fave non-Who ranges..

The Sins of Captain John : 3 Peach Blossom Heights
Paradise found? on a world living in innocence - then two 'snakes' turn up to spread "knowledge". (Their names are Jack and John!) Like the Whoniverse meets a 70s sitcom made in Soho (or so I imagine, he adds hastily...) Fun story which could only be one with John and of course there's a big sinister plot too - or is there?
I've commented on this before, but I love the narrative style of this set. Fourth wall, forget it!

Taking into account that today is a special day I am going to listen to the Tom Baker at 80 interview & then one of my favourite stories, The Auntie Matter.

Zaltys: Also known as the verbal equivalent of a shrug. Safe to say, I was not a fan.
On the plus side, ‘The Crimes of Thomas Brewster’ was fantastic and a nice introduction for Flip. A character who has since become one of my favourite companions.

Takes all sorts to make a world doesn’t it? Glad to hear you enjoyed it though.

The Sins of Captain John : 4 Darker Purposes
Another great story to complete the set, a bit darker and more "time to get down to business" but with lots of typical Captain John moments too! Partway through I remembered that David Llewellyn also wrote the excellent MR story 'Serpent in the Silver Mask' and something of that same vibe comes through here except... with John around you never need to ask whodunnit?! He did, obviously!

Dark Shadows -The Happier Dead-Adams
just add Murray Melvin for those lovely deliciously crisp and distinctly creepy tones 😉
