Watched "Midnight" for the first time in years, this time with my very brave 8 year old (who is a fan and was seeing it for the first time).
It's amazing how terrifying this episode is, and how so much of it is down to the sound design (the synced audio is genuinely unnerving). Phenomenal acting as well, especially the group turning on each other and *especially* David Tennant conveying the Doctor's sheer terror at the end:

Well, as 'Sync' is now out, no prizes for guessing what I've been watching this evening...?
'Just finished watching 'Aliens Of London' and am a few minutes into 'World War III', which I should (just about) be able to finish before going out for the evening... (When I get back I'll be listening to 'Sync' and watching 'Boom Town')

So decided to revisit Torchwood again, with Everything Changes. Having listened to Big Finish’s stuff with Suzie her actions here actually seemed to make a bit more sense this time round.

Today I a watching “The Time Warrior”, brilliant introduction to Sarah Jane and debut of the Sontarins. Side note could not help but giggle when Linx has his tongue sticking out 😄👅

Been going through the entirety of Torchwood again (and slotting in audios when I can, which really enhances the series). I enjoyed some of the more dodgy episodes a bit more this time round. Maybe knowing what was coming helped.
Also just want to re-empathise how goddamn impressive Children of Earth is. Every character is horribly, horribly realistic. One touch I only just noticed is (if I interpreted correctly) the soldiers don’t just happen upon Gwen, Rhys and the children-a member of the public points them out. This is a work of pure tragedy and utter bleakness. I will be trying Miracle Day, but I honestly fail to see how it could possibly live up to this.

This is a work of pure tragedy and utter bleakness. I will be trying Miracle Day, but I honestly fail to see how it could possibly live up to this. Oh, it's incredible. The 2000s answer to the conspiracy thriller miniseries format that Edge of Darkness nailed in '85. Children of Earth the one to watch if you want to write some seriously intelligent villains. All their people are properly briefed, specially chosen and Johnson is quite genuinely terrifying in her role as Death's hand for the government. Not just because of her brutality, but also the empathy she is able to demonstrate towards the end of the series. She is not an alien monster, she's a human being who is deliberately making these choices because she thinks they're right. Speaking of conclusions, I'm watching Planet of the Spiders for the first time in years. They really did pour their all into making this story work. The little touches like the Doctor dressing in a black coat for this adventure to the sweeping structural choices. It's fascinating to see the last of the Pertwee-era spy tropes in play here. Clegg's inadvertant connection to the conspiracy at the meditation centre echoes that initial Bondmania as assuredly as the gyrocopter in that long chase after Lupton. I know it's only a myth, but I can definitely see the potential moment where he could have removed his mask and become the Master. About four minutes into the third episode, just after we're introduced to the Council; the spider knows it isn't his true face and asks him to remove it. Talking of characters, Tommy's rather sweet. I love how much of the narrative is devoted to giving him a meaningful role. The actor and the story are both just as excited as the character to explore his newfound articulation. Flowers of Algernon style. The spiders themselves are injected with a great deal of personality by their respective voice artists. I was a bit surprised on rewatching how late into the story the Abbot appears. It doesn't feel like it, but that might have a lot to do with Cho Je. It's funny how the Doctor's final moments on Metebelis don't end with a fistfight, but a plea. A dark mirror of his own avarice.

Two episodes into Torchwood: Miracle Day and honestly struggling to get into it. I dunno why, it just feels like some of the personality that characterised Torchwood before is missing. The music doesn’t help this, with it literally just sounding like stock thriller stuff (despite being composed by Murray Gold).
The Miracle as a concept is pretty good, but the shock value is already wearing off a bit (and the cgi was really not up to the fate of the villain of episode 2). The pace feels so slow, part of what made Children of Earth work was its unrelenting pace in the beginning-it felt like Torchwood was on the ropes. Here, not so much.
The lack of a real antagonist at the moment also hurts the pace, at the moment all there’s been is some unidentified people in uniform and two traitors who were so blindingly obvious they might as well have had ‘villain’ stamped on their foreheads.

The Green Death! If only the CSO wasn't so glaring, this would have been as near-perfect as you can get. Some wonderful location filming, great cast, lovely story, and a real sense of Jo getting ready to 'fly the coup.' Terrific.

Reached halfway point of Miracle Day.
This series is growing on me. The Miracle as a concept keeps developing nicely and the character developments have been steady. The pace has evened out now and a nice conspiracy is building. The ending of The Categories of Life was genuinely horrific as well.

Wartime Finally got around to watching this. Didnt realise it was only 30 minutes long lol. explains why there's all the extras. Great little story and could actually imagine it as a subplot in a bigger Doctor Who story
