The Claws of Axos part 1 for my daily morning classic who episode. The Axons are some some of the freakiest looking classic who aliens I have ever seen!😱 Those gold faces are deep in the uncanny valley!
Then this evening as while I was busy scooping out the guts for my Jack O’lantern (yes, it’s going to be of the tenth Doctor’s face, why yes he is my favorite Doctor), I rewatched The Silence in the Library with my mom. Silence in the Library/Forest of the Dead has to be one of my favorite Doctor Who stories of all time! It’s dark, whimsical, emotional, scary, heartwarming and romantic!

The Androids of Tara.
To make up for Big Finish's outrageous refusal to acknowledge the 21st anniversary of the Taran Wood Beast ( ), I thought I'd give this another watch. What great fun it is - a superb cast, all giving exactly the right kind of performance; tapping into the spirit of Doctor Who at the time. All vaguely tongue-in-cheek at certain moments, and then deadly serious at others. It is also one of those stories that may be over twenty years old, but visually has barely dated at all. Still probably my favourite story from the Key To Time series. The story stands out for me from my younger days. It was after episode 3 that the local station stopped airing Who. I had only seen a few Sarah Jane stories, the Leela stories*, and the Key to Time only up to that point. I was in a living cliffhanger for months and months, until I discovered the Target novelisations in a local specialist bookstore.
* except Face of Evil, which was not aired in my region, presumably because of its treatment of religion.

I love how the "passive" Axon guise resembles a close approximation of the humanoid form, but only an approximation. The face is given a great deal of detail for the benefit of their audience, but they've no more functioning vocal cords than they do working eyes. They're just simulacra. The bodies themselves distinguishable only by form. If they hadn't encountered the Master or that homeless man before arriving on Earth, I don't think they would have known for certain that we speak from our mouths. They would have assumed, just as they did with the toad (believing it was a farmable animal), something likely more alien and otherworldly.

Last night I finished 'The Greatest Show In The Galaxy' (I will never not love the fact that some of this was shot in a car park! ) & before bed tonight I will be making a start on 'Silver Nemesis' (whether I'm watching the as-broadcast three-parter or my omnibus edit of the VHS 'special edition' I haven't decided yet...).

I have discussed elsewhere Today I am finally watching Episode 2 of The Abominable Snowmen- From the Lost In Time set. Its been one of my favourite Doctor Who Books/Stories for nearly four decades and i have a real love affair with it as a story.I had seen stills and knew that there were no snowscapes or amazing blizzards as my mind had conjured up but hey....i feel like a virgin today 🤪😂

Over the weekend I watched the broadcast version of 'Silver Nemesis' & have since been watching 'Battlefield' (time allowing, this evening I'll be watching part 4).
This afternoon, as I've recently read the novelisations, I've been watching 'The Trial Of A Time Lord' (sadly, the 'normal' DVD, but depending on how much I get paid in overtime tomorrow, I am tempted to snag a copy from Guildford when I'm there tomorrow...). I've just started 'Mindwarp' part 4, so am half-way through, and should be able to get partway through 'Terror Of The Vervoids' before I head out for the evening...

The Green Death - A very strong, if bittersweet, end to Season 10 and to Jo's tenure on the show. She and Dr Hippie Longhair actually have chemistry with each other and it's kinda cute. Much more believable than ditching Vicki in ancient Troy. I'd forgotten how much I enjoyed the BOSS humming away to itself.

The Time WarriorI'm going to come a bit out of left field here and say the Invincible Hero is an interesting concept. You see it often in chivalric romances or pulp novels, the implacable protagonist who always has a witty quip and a cunning scheme to extricate himself from danger. The Third Doctor apparently has a reputation as being one of these. I can see him being one of the stronger influences for a well-read Doctor, but... I always got this impression that before the Fifth Doctor, he was probably one of the more emotionally vulnerable incarnations. His exile really got to him in a big way, so much so that it's difficult to picture a Third Doctor that wasn't affected by it. Then, you get to stories like The Time Warrior where the vulnerability seems more literal; i.e. he gets the absolute tar beaten out of him. He's shot twice (in the face) by Linx and repeatedly shot at by an amateur firing squad before the whole thing's over. This is the first we see the Sontarans on television and their representative makes one hell of a first impression. The scenes between the Doctor and Linx are a highlight of the story. We even get a direct challenge to Gallifrey, the Doctor -- with an unusual degree of anger -- rebuking the idea of even trying for an invasion. It's interesting to see the Brigadier using the Doctor as a freelance spy, of sorts, and clash with Sarah who's doing precisely the same thing for her own ends. If Robert Holmes had trouble writing the story, it doesn't show much in the writing itself. What I struggle a bit more with is the directing/editing. Between The Green Death (Michael E. Briant of The Robots of Death) and Invasion of the Dinosaurs (Paddy Russell of Pyramids of Mars), Warrior has a strange, stilted quality to its blocking. Almost a disconnect from the Prince Valiant, Ivanhoe-style it's trying to imitate (incidentally, the archer could be named Hal after Hal Foster who did Valiant and, if it is, that's a nice touch). Also... I wonder, if we ever get a re-release of this, could we get a reenactment of Linx's space combat duel with the Rutans in the Target novelisation's prologue? With today's CGI, that'd be so much fun to see, wouldn't it?

The Ghost Monument today.
Gotta be honest, I’ve been going through a period where I just generally haven’t felt very motivated to watch or listen to much Doctor Who lately - having a rather awful sleep/work schedule can do that. Today, though, I really felt motivated to go back and really give the rest of Series 11 a thorough second or third watch.
So, The Ghost Monument. It’s not going to go down as one of the greats sadly. There’s some stilted dialogue here and there, the pacing is a bit slow for most of the episode and it seems to stop in places for character drama, and the story seems a little generic. It has some high points - the regulars by this point are beginning to settle in a little and the episode is shot really well, though there is a little too much shaky cam for my tastes in some places. There is a little iffy CG in places but the episode seems aware of its limitations for the most part and does its best to hide it.
Overall though, I’d say the episode’s greatest weakness is that it doesn’t have much to distinguish itself. It’s different from the rest of the series, definitely, but I can’t say I was as excited by it or captivated as I would have liked. Still, I also really like the fresh coat of paint the actors, the filming, and the music all bring, so I think that helps balance this episode out for me.

Having Art Malik for one scene was a waste to me. He would be a terrific Who baddie.

I started a rewatch of Genesis of the Daleks last night because it was a bout time I did this one again. It was the first ever Who I saw and remains my favorite of the entire Classic run of the show. I still have a copy of the LP release with Tom Baker's narration bridging the scenes.

The second half of Robots of Death. It was playing on Pluto TV when I came home. That era was lightning in a bottle. The design of the robots is iconic, more than forty years later.

This evening, as it's Halloween, I watched part 1 of 'The Curse Of Fenric' (I had planned on watching the 'special edition' version of it but wasn't quite in the right 'mood').

It Takes You Away, my favourite episode of season 11. Yes, that one was really good. I just love the random, weird and absurd. I wish we had gotten more of that.
