There’s a horror movie called Alien? That’s really offensive. No wonder everyone keeps invading you.

Compared with: T Conundrum Rings of Akterten Fear Her Monsters is almost "Genesis" level good Regards mark687 I'll give you Fear Her and Tsuranga Conundrum but I love Rings Of Ahkaten. Totally and utterly. Some of the best work Murray Gold ever did on the show (so good, The Long Song was reused for Matt's regeneration), Neil Cross' speech that he wrote for The Doctor facing the Sun-God and, of course, the way Matt just absolutely nails it. Not till the end of The Zygon 2-parter and Doctor Falls did we get a monologue delivered like that in New Who. Just wondrous and stunning. And it's not just the speech, the physical acting throughout it from Matt is amazing - from scratching his head to his wry smile as he's thought of a plan to his Troughton-esque hunched up handtwiddles, to the single tear as he recants his adventures, to the bravado posturing as he unleashes all his memories at the end...I miss Matt. Everyone talks about the "old man in the young body" - it's never more obvious than in this ep to me. Then there's the wide eyed wonder Jenna brings as she realises what's going on. That's something I've severely missed in Who under Chibnall, the Doctor does a remarkable thing in a remarkable place and the companion knows they've just seen something majestic and life-affirming that no other human ever has. Jenna sells it with just her reaction shots. The minute Matt says "Can you hear them....?" onwards...it's one of my all time favourite scenes. Yeah, rest of the ep isn't the best - though it is a solid space culture adventure - but that whole section is so impossibly wonderful that I could never rank it that low along with the poorer modern eps like Fear Her or Tsungra Conundrum. Though I think the Beeb knew that was the best bit as they uploaded it to YT. And you've made me wax so much about it I'm going to watch it again now! www.youtube.com/watch?v=GoVLhUxhdSwI don’t often disagree with you, Davy, but tRoA is a mess, through and through. That speech - even though I’m seeing it constantly referenced across social media and the rest of the internet - just doesn’t work for me at all. Matt and Jenna are great but there’s so much else wrong with it. The subplot with the little girl doesn’t have enough fleshing out; I’ve no idea about where Clara learnt to drive a space moped; the “Star with a face” just doesn’t feel like a real threat to me... it’s all just a mess that needs more time or less material, which - as I’ve said in several other places - is often the mark of a story that could be brilliant. But this is just ordinary for me.

As I said in my post it's not the best and pretty standard space fayre but I was defending it from being ranked with the lowest of the low which I think it's well above. There are a dozen stories in New Who I'd struggle to put on before Rings and a few dozen more in the classic era.

Yeah, it’s a pretty ordinary episode: the faults I’ve listed are just sloppy storytelling that you can blame on the current format. I really bloody miss four and six part stories where you had just as much story but a lot more space to let the world breathe. Of course, a lot of them mucked it up as well.

Just watched part 1 of the Sea Devils, so far I love this one especially 3 visiting the Master in prison😊 I love how despite them being arch enemies, you can tell deep down they truly care about each other😊 The scenes with the Master in prison remind me a lot of 12 visiting Missy in the Vault! I wonder if that subplot in series 10 was modeled on this at all🤔I especially love the unexpected adorableness of the Master happily whistling along with the Clangers and then looking rather embarrassed when he gets walked in on😍😄 I also think there is is a lot of very good good suspense with the Sea Devils themselves (despite some not entirely convincing masks)💀 Very intrigued to continue on with this one!

Ditto. It's such a great showing for all the characters. The Doctor gets to singlehandedly save the peace conference, Jo overturns a prison riot on her own, the Master's control over Stangmoor feels effortless, the Brigadier gets his big cavalry moment, even Yates gets his own thread to follow. The cliffhanger for the second episode is emblematic to me of everything a good cliffhanger should be. It's strange, terrifying and the Doctor's role deliberately changes the course of events. He's invaluable to how it all plays out. Plus, it's not every day that Doctor Who does its own riff on A Clockwork Orange, that's got to be worth the price of admission on its own. I don't think we are disagreeing then! As I said in my post it's not the best and pretty standard space fayre but I was defending it from being ranked with the lowest of the low which I think it's well above. Particularly in light of series like The Clone Wars where serials are alive, well and living on Dantooine. Funny thing, Series 7 was the first season where I thought it a shame we didn't have NuWho novelisations, a lot of the stories in that second-half there seemed almost built for them. I still think that The Snowmen was good enough for a six-parter (if not a Ben Aaronovitch-style novelisation) and I was a bit surprised that The Crimson Horror wasn't one of the first stories leapt upon by Target to adapt. I'm very tempted to preorder it from Penguin.

Yesterday, I (finally) watched the last two episodes of 'The Dalek Invasion Of Earth', 'The Rescue' (for the second time in just over a week) and part one of 'The Romans' (co-incidentally on its 55th anniversary)...
Today I'm planning on watching the remainder of 'The Romans' and might make a start on 'The Web Planet', though I don't know how far I'm going to get.

Caves of Androzani.as an aside I don't think I've notice Nicola slipping into RP in the first few scenes before.

Watched the superb Nikola Tesla's Night of Terror, followed by Planet of The Spiders and Robot. This new guy Tom Baker isn't too bad, I think I'm going to like to him.

Have been looking forward to the Tesla story all day since people seem to be very happy with it. Just a quick bite to eat and then dishes and then... finally, sit down and enjoy.

Over the past few days I've slowly been making my way through 'The Web Planet' (finishing it in the bath about an hour ago)... 'Anyone got any rum going spare? Vodka or whisky'll do!

Day Of The Doctor. I just love it (it's also the only Who I have access to as everything else is boxed up). The more I watch it the more I love the way it has been structured so that every part of the story is mirrored by another part of the story. And, no matter how often I see it, John Hurt's "It should have been locked" cracks me up every time.

A satirical mash-up. On The Buses was a popular family sitcom during the 70's heyday of Dr Who (it even had a Kids board game). The programme Life on Mars was not exaggerating about the times....

Umm, yes well. Let's never speak of this again... Though Blakey as the Master did make me smile, almost...
