Yesterday I ended my first day of the year off with part one of 'The Crusade' (The Lion). You know, I can genuinely say that I think this might be the first time I've seen this story...

On my way to continue my tour through the classic series. Today, two DVDs arrived- Robot and Colony in Space. Not sure with which to start... I adore the 3rd Doctor team (Jo, 3 and the Master), however, it was also Tom's birthday... Whatever I decide... Will continue on the weekend, only interrupted by Star Trek Picard of course.

The Pilot.
Even in this, his zillionth script for the show, Stephen Moffat was writing some wonderful, magical, frightening, funny, tragic moments. A lot of them crop up here, expertly handled. This is a superb and rather underrated story, I think, all the more remarkable because apart from the regulars, it only features three other actors Jennifer Hennessey, Stephahie Hyam and Nicholas Briggs. Beautiful.

A fun episode. Bill Potts was a breath of fresh air. Almost enough to save the awful 12th Doctor's era.

A fun episode. Bill Potts was a breath of fresh air. Almost enough to save the awful 12th Doctor's era. I must respectfully disagree with the statement, “awful 12th Doctor’s era”! We are all in in titled to our own opinions, and I get that 12 is not everyone’s cup of tea, BUT even if he is not everyone’s favorite Doctor he should still be given credit where credit is due! 12 did undeniably have the most (and I would argue best) character development of any Doctor in the modern era and I would argue of any of the Doctors on tv period! Every episode progressed his character a little bit more from where he started. 12’s era is different from any other Doctor’s because it was at heart(s) a character study. 12 felt like real living breathing person rather than a fictional character, to the point that he feels like an old friend. The sort of person you want to comfort and tell them everything is going to be okay, the person you cheer for to find love and defeat the monsters, the person who you want to weep with when personal tragedy strikes. He’s a walking paradox because although he is one of the most alien of the Doctors he is also one the most human as well. Also there are so many unique standout episodes in his era that you would not get during any other era, deep breath, listen, mummy on the orient express, Dark Water, last Christmas magician’s apprentice/ witches familiar, face the raven, Heaven Sent, Husbands of River Song, (the aforementioned) The Pilot, the monk trilogy, the world enough and time, the Doctor Falls, and Twice Upon a Time. And the episodes I did not mention in 12’s era all have brilliant moments that can make you laugh, cry, and wonder at the universe, even, dare I say it, Hell Bent! I sick and tired of 12’s era being trashed by nearly everyone saying that he was too old and unlikable and his era’s scripts were bad, I see his era as unique and brilliant, filled with imagination, wonder, suspense, emotional discovery, but most of all heart(s) 💙💙

And series 10 is my favorite ever season. Nu Who just got better and better with each series, only series 11 did not quite get there (which would have been a lot to ask for a new team coming in!).
However, I also understand some of the points the other side are making concerning what went wrong or what could have been handled better.
And in the end, it all comes down to personal taste anyways.
For example, I really dislike "Hell Bent" and like to pretend it never happened

For example, I really dislike "Hell Bent" and like to pretend it never happened My favourite New Who Doctor too! I've enjoyed a lot of the revived series but I never really 'connected' with it until Peter Capaldi took on the role. I thought this was just down to age and being a bit reluctant to move away from the classic era, but no; I was just waiting for 'my' Doctor to arrive and he did. Overall I think series 11 was my favourite of the three but there were high highlights in all of them and I choose never to see again the handful of horrors like 'the episode that shall not be named' that was just mentioned.
Looking forward to the Twelfth Doctor Chronicles next month; if we can't have the real thing on audio (yet ) then this will be a very good start!

My favourite post-2005 Doctor as well, and watching The Pilot brought back why. A wonderfully subtle actor, Peter Capaldi is full of little eccentric ticks and eccentricities. His look of confusion when Bill asks him a question about the TARDIS looking like a kitchen, his inability to react naturally to her news that her mother has died - it's all there, but not in any OTT or exaggerated way (unlike the three previous Doctors - none of whom I'm knocking: every actor does different things with the role, which is how it should be). His mad, staring eyes; his way of moving (echoes of another Peter - Cushing - spring to mind); his gradually softening caustic manner; his final, very sad, refusal to regenerate - he's brilliant. Absolutely brilliant.

The Time Monster.
I've a strange fascination with this story of creeping Chronovores and Cambridge chronologists at the moment. In terms of the Pertwee years, it's unfortunately not one of its stronger entries, but I've been curious to try and figure out why. I think I've got it now.
The protagonist of your story doesn't necessarily need to be a heroic character and I think The Time Monster is much more interested in telling a story from the Master's perspective than it is the Doctor, who is actually out-of-focus for much of the story. Nice idea, but the expectations of television at the time keep trying to flex the script back towards the Doctor, which means we spend a lot of time waiting for things to happen. It's not until the explanation of Kronos and the jousting in the TARDIS does he pop back into that active role.
If you wanted to tell this story nowadays... I think you could start there. In the vortex, with the two TARDISes locked together. It makes a nice ten-minute establishing confrontation before the Doctor's banished to the vortex. Rather than Jo rescuing him with an emergency TARDIS switch, we instead transition to the beginning of the story. A city, whole world, in flames. The nightmare on Earth from "Episode One" and the lead-in to the duel. Time is rolled back, only the Doctor has forewarning this time and his more passive role takes on an added meaning. He's piecing together what he's lost, his path to the future, in the hopes of finding a way to avoid it.
Side note: I don't think it's ever established, but I wonder if the 500-year-old Dalios and his Atlantean chums were contemporaries of the Time Lords in the old days? Not a Gallifreyan colony as such, but occupying a certain niche that modern Time Lords have since taken over.

Battlefield, for the first time. Not without its faults, but otherwise a pretty good story to open Season 26 with!

The Three Doctors.
I think for the first time ever with the commentary switched on. It's just wonderful. Katy Manning, Nick Courtney and Barry Letts are all genuinely enthused and engaged with the story, telling anecodotes from the UNIT family and passing complements on guest stars. It was very sweet to hear Letts and Manning compliment Hartnell's efforts to be part of the programme ("Bless his heart.") and Courtney's anecdotes about Jon and Pat's meeting for rehearsal.
I don't need to say anything about the story itself, do I? Let me just--Oh. Someone's padlocked me to the chair. *clears throat* Well... I consider it the ur-example for classic Who. If someone knew nothing about the series, the format, the characters, any of it: The Three Doctors is a strong place to start. It almost singularly codifies every strength of the series up until that point. It's never looked better, moved smoother or felt as mythologically grounded (i.e. the sense of this being A Big Dealtm) as it does here, paving the way for an altogether rather strong anniversary season. Quintessential, essential Who.

Fugitive of the Judoon spoiler {Spoiler} In retrospect I wish they hadn't put the shots of the Cyberman into the series trailers. It would have made Jack's words more ominous and unexpected and left us to ponder even more on how Cybermen might be tying into the milion and one other events going on if we had no idea they were going to be part of the series.
I can't remember the last time there were so many ongoing threads to have to juggle at once that may or may not be related, may be entirely seperate or may be somewhere in the middle. It's making it a really interesting time to be a fan.

I've put it in spoiler tags for anyone else who might stumble across it by mistake. Feel free to delete and move it if you so wish
