Any recommendations on this range based on H.P. Lovecraft's Cthulhu mythos? Looks intriguing but I'm not sure whether to start at the beginning or if I should cherry pick individual releases.

They are all well done, so start at the beginning, and bear in mind that they are done as actual radio dramas of that era complete with commercial breaks (half the fun), an on-air host (who is the spokesperson for the cigarettes that are advertised in the ads for the first series, and has to a replaced for series two because he ends up in an iron lung from smoking)...the entire mythos is very well crafted.

I ended up getting the first two as well as jumping forward to The Call of Cthulhu. Loving them so far!

i am listening dagon and the acting is well done and like others said it is done as an actual radio broadcast. the writing is competent but i find the conceit of the radio broadcast just doesnt work and takes me out of the story

There's a new Dark Adventure Radio Theatre release on it's way in June - an adaptation of The Haunter in the Dark. For more info (including a list of props included) have a look hereLike Big Finish, you can order a physical copy or a download of the files only. If you pre-order a the physical copy, you'll be sent a link to download the story as soon as it is released, with the CD etc wending its way to you by mail.

Plus the "Call of Cthulhu" movie and "The Whisperer in Darkness" movie are well worth getting after this.
And if you haven't heard the christmas songs....

Just to advise that The Haunter of the Dark is just about to be released. Anyone who has pre-ordered it should already have received access to a download of the story, and from what has been posted online the CDs should be back, packaged with the props that accompany the physical release and in the mail in around a week's time. (I've downloaded my copy but not listened yet...)

Oh, I loved listening to Dagon, I've been meaning to get a few more when I have the spare money. I've had a fondness for At the Mountains of Madness after finding it through Endurance and The Colour Out of Space. Wonderful additions for anyone who's a fan of suspenseful horror.

These are very, very, very great in my opinion. I'd say just pick whichever you want; they don't actually have a specific order (though it is easy to find the publication and writing order of the tales) and mostly stand alone. One of my favourites they did was the adaptaton of 'Shadows Over Innsmouth' (as I quite like the vivd descriptions of the New England atmosphere and noir/gangster plot mix)... that story was also the basis of the game 'Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of The Earth' which was a good (albeit slightly buggy and way too short) game; I'd definately get it if you are into Lovecraft and earlier 2000s video games. 'At the Mountains of Madness' is always good as well; maybe my favourite of Lovecraft's stories and the adaptation certainly does it justice.

If you mean the ones that were made to be like 1920s silent movie and 1930s talkie I agree. I would actually like a good "modern" adaptation of one of the better (probably 'At The Mountains of Madness') stories as well, preferably set in the right period. I could imagine a TV show featuring the shorter ones like 'The Hound' 'The Festival', 'Dagon' or 'The Nameless City' (teh last two definately some of my favourites). I , do like the Re-Animator films (more spoofs than anything though), 'From Beyond' and 'Necronomicon' for all its flaws, though.

We came so close to getting a major motion picture version of At The Mountains of Madness shot completely in 3D, directed Guillermo Del Toro and produced by James Cameron that it still pains me to think about.

Aye, same. I remember how excited I was when that was announced, only for it to be cruelly taken away!

Not Dark Adventure Radio Theatre, but the HP Lovecraft Historical Society has announced they'll be releasing The Complete Fiction of HP Lovecraft audiobook (download only). Pricey, but there's over 50 hours of material. Also, there's a cut-down selected tales as well for a lower price. Samples of the readings are at the page linked above. There's also some pre-order bonus material if ordered before 20 August. I'm more of a dramatisation person, so I'm giving this a think before deciding whether to order.

And while we're talking DART, there has been a largely detail-free post on the (closed) DART page, which says that they have scripts for the next three releases. The actors are now seeing these. "Detail-free" means the stories aren't specified, although it has been mentioned that one will be an adaptation of a non-HPL mythos story. If you want to join the page, it's at www.facebook.com/groups/darkadventure/ and you can ask to join.

Just to add, it's been announced that the three (still unspecified) future releases have had the dialogue recorded. Presumably they'll be released one by one over the next several months, though that's pure speculation on my part!
