Have recently sat down and listened to all of BF's Torchwood, including those I hadn't listened to (in addition to revisiting those I had).
On first blush, I couldn't get through this one.
Something about the format, the story, not sure. Just wasn't working for me. This time I put it on while I was working and just let it run and managed to get past the point I usually bow out at and... it was good. Like, it picked up a lot in the second half. Somewhere around the halfway point, where it introduces two more speaking parts and suddenly this becomes a play instead of a companion chronicle, it really grabbed me.
As for placement...
I'm not sure. Jack mentions that the team has done well without him before, which would suggest early Series 2, but later stories seem to indicate a placement more in Series 1.
I like how this sets up the ongoing thread with The Committee, and leaves an out for Jack not being around if they need it.
It's good.

Picked this up as a bonus in last year's Humble Bundle. Other than Children of Earth, I never really got into the show or cared about any of the characters besides Jack. I donated mainly for the Worlds of Big Finish boxset and thought that I might as well give this a shot since it was sitting there. Based on my experiences with the Torchwood radio plays, I was expecting to shut it off after a few minutes and move onto something else.
This. Was. Awesome.
A really compelling central concept, fantastic performances, and a efficient well-paced script that made the most of a small cast. I didn't miss the other team members and thought that Barrowman did a great job carrying the story as the lead. He's very likable as a narrator, which made the balance of narration and full cast scenes seamless and fun to listen to. 9/10.
Also have to mention the score - really moody and reminded me of the Dark Knight trilogy. Loved it.
I'm very picky about my BF purchases and happy to say that this is one that truly delivers. The reviews for the next episodes have generally been really strong, so I'll keep an eye for the next sale and jump on them.

The Torchwood audios strip away the gratuitous sex and swearing, and are strong and thoughtful character pieces. Even seemingly one-note characters like Yvonne Hartman and Suzie Costello are made very three-dimensional, with much needed light shed on them and how they think. The only weak link is the Committee arc, which doesn't seem to have an endgame in sight as of yet.

And I actually like the Committee Arc, so who knows what you'll think.

Realized I never commented on this, so here it goes. The story was quite interesting and had me at the edge of my seat, Barrowman and John Sessions were both very good during this, I also love the Committee Arc as well elkawho and being up to Ghost Mission(which I am currently listening to as of right now) and am continually looking forward to the next tidbit tying into the arc. A solid 8/10!

Ghost Mission is terrific. Who knew Andy had it in him? I just love Norton.

Re-listened to this yesterday, and I have to say I enjoyed it a lot more the second time around.

This is a 10/10 release for me. I was on the edge of my sofa the whole time. Thrilling with a great performances and an increasingly intense questioning of reality. Love it so much.

I didn't really like the TV Torchwood, but picked up The Conspiracy as part of the Christmas sale....and I'm glad I did.
The Conspiracy was ace...a whopping 9 out of 10. I have Fall to Earth to take in next, and have Uncanny Valley and Made you Look in the post. The last two will be saved until i can fill the gaps.
Bring it on, BF nail another addictive series.

Listening to this again. Its format is still a bit odd, but, I suppose it's almost a transitory piece. It's a mix of the dramatic readings and full-casts that the BBC were airing, but only features one of the regulars. We get narration that is a tad overacted, but the full-cast scenes are as good as anything else Big Finish does.
But, on the other hand, it's also a nice introduction to Torchwood. We, the hypothetical listener new to Torchwood, learn about the Institute through the reporters and conspiracy nuts that Jack interacts with throughout the piece. And in turn, we learn of The Committee the same way, the new recurring foe that will haunt Torchwood throughout the next twenty some-odd releases. At this point, we don't know how much of George Wilson's ravings about the mysterious Committee are truth, and how much are fiction, we just know that Jack's worried about them. And the reveal of just who the Committee agent in the piece is, and their subsequent setup of Jack, makes them seem all the more dangerous. An excellent introduction to both the Institute and its shadowy rival.

I notice that the Committee member says they've been "investigating earth for just over one hundred years" which checks out if this is set in Series 1 or 2 somewhere. Not sure how well her comments about actually believing Jack's advice and leaving earth alone only to find out he'd conned them later scans with what we know from later releases, but she may just have been being coy with him, not giving him the full picture.

I just realised a continuity error on relistening. The blogger Sam mentions his favourite Instagram filter and that everyone can follow his account. I'm pretty sure Instagram wasn't founded until 2010, when this story was set in 2007.

Not that it's a problem, just took me out of the moment briefly. I guess you could say that Instagram was founded earlier in the whoniverse.
