I never saw the fx as bad.
Maybe it's a blind spot.
Eg...
If you were writing a description of an axon you wouldn't write.
They were golden and human shaped with ping pong ball's for eyes with tiny holes, as if it were for the actors to look out... they have a living zip along their spine...
You would write something like
They were golden shimmering beings, their eyes were bulbus and lacked pupils dispite this they watched out every move.
I'm not sure in what way referencing "bad" fx would help.
But it may be a great story too to double bluff the reader.

How visual are people's stories, generally? I know it's prose narration, but I'm concerned that aspects of mine are maybe too reliant on bad 1970's CSO. James Surely that's a good thing? Shows that it fits in with the era of the time.

Will that 'Last Story' still be acceptable?
I thought they weren't allowed to have been published online, which you've just done, haven't you?
Also, I thought we weren't allowed to use established enemies?
EDIT: Just got the 'not even remotely serious' memo. Are you sending it anyway?
James

(My other 4 are MUCH better) ENJOY Can I be the only person who read this and thought - "Oh good, I've finally seen how another person formatted their story and it's similar to mine." It's a good fun story, even if it is utterly barking, and at the very least shows you are a decent writer (albeit a teeny bit odd, but around here, that's normal). Thanks for sharing! Chriss C.

I was going to send it at the last moment... but last night I dreamed that their server crashed... Can I just say that... taking issue with the use of old monsters... was not my largest objection to this story lol.

Cheers. Like I said. I kind of just wanted to give them a laugh after wading through hundreds... posibly thousands... of submissions. It's a bit depressing to think of thousands of submissions. I like to think of it as someone going through the submissions and rejecting them one by one, "Daleks... Nope. Using David Tennant... Nope. Daleks again... Nope. Person can't spell Doctor or Who... Nope. Lakeds... Hmm. Isn't that just Daleks again?" I'm hoping the first quality control check will also cut out a lot of people who thought their idea was so good that they didn't have to stick to the rules. Does that make me a bad person? Chriss C.

If it's not Ian, then I pity the poor intern tasked with that mammoth endeavour.... But sort of to bring the thread back to something in the broader picture, I am glad BF is finally looking outside the represented to farm new talent. Perhaps it shouldn't have taken until Paul sadly departed us to do so, but I think he'd be chuffed at the idea and what it means: yes, unsolicited is a gamble of quality and far too impractical to be done all the time, but there are tons of good if not great writers who simply haven't lucked out in getting an agent or many high profiles gigs for one reason or another, and working on Big Finish, and by extension BBC licenses, could be a massive career booster as well as contact building opportunity.

Of course I adore Nick, Matt and the many Johns to no end, but if I had to concede to one, just one criticism of BF is that they have been a little insular when it comes to their writing staff and it is important for a company to keep new blood circulating. I'm not saying give 'Joe Fanboy' War Doctor 4, and it's nice that the Short Trips and Early Adventures are starting to get some fresh faces in, but I do hope even if they don't win that BF will consider holding onto the runners up for possible future gigs. I second whoever said future contests should open up to two or three more winners.
And while I'm on the soapbox, here's how I'd design a writer's curriculum for the newcomers who aren't invited by BF and come through avenues like this: -ST, CC, MR Anthology slot and then the full cast Ranges. Build up, refine and expand each time up the ladder, as well as leave room for our regulars to do what they do best in the bigger stuff.

As someone who has done An SST and a Short Trips I wish it was as simple as a ladder!! There are new writers entering across the pice if you look, Torchwood and a few new faces on Survivors and so on.
And, yes, I've still got my fingers crossed for a Chance to pitch a script!
Good luck!

Welp, just entered my two stories. I was hoping to get three or four in, but my third idea is a bit too convoluted for me to rework on what is essentially the last day (coz I'm not sure if Midnight June 30th means the minute after 23:59 on June 29th or the minute after 23:59 on June 30th).
Here's to hoping!

I know what you mean about Midnight being a confusing deadline - hence why my submission went in at the start of the week...

Conventionally (and not consistently) midnight is the end of the day on which it is named. Given the sentiment of last day in June it would be more than fair to interpret it as 'the very end of June' rather than '24 hours before the end of June'
You could ask Ian!

FYI Ian has been in touch with me and confirmed the 23:59 deadline, ie the last minute in June. Anything sent from July onwards will not count (nor will it be early for 2017 I imagine!!)

I can't believe they allowed multiple submissions. That's going to be a lot of reading for them.
Best of luck to anyone entering!

That's what I figured but I've been burned before by the Ambiguous Midnight (which sounds like a pretty garbage antihero tbh). Maybe I'll power through my more complicated idea when I get home from work tonight. It's pure fan convolutedness though involving five Doctors and multiple timelines, though. So maybe not.
