Dracula (1931) A Classic. You can tell it was adapted from the stage, but its still great
The Ghoul (2017) A Just plain weird British Thriller
Brawl in Cell Block 99 Holy Crap that was Brutal. I expected one kind of prison film, the it just turned
Terrifier Now this is pure Grindhouse and brilliant

Metal Heart
(Irish Comedy/Drama 2 Sisters {1 Miss Popularity 1 Goth Rocker) find themselves revaluating each other, when while home alone for holidays. a slightly dubious older man house-sitting next door, sparks the Goth's interest.)

The Marx Brothers films are the exact same way -- very very clearly vaudeville stage stories, committed to celluloid.

Jojo Rabbit for the second time. Taika Waititi threads a really thin needle. Making a coming-of-age story about a Nazi youth facing his own bigotry & fear, whose imaginary friend is Adolph Hitler, into something funny, moving and terrifying. Easily one of the best films of the year.

The Marx Brothers films are the exact same way -- very very clearly vaudeville stage stories, committed to celluloid. The 1931 Spanish version of 'Dracula' (filmed by a different team with different actors but on the same sets as the English version, and at the same time except the other team worked at night... appropriately enough) is a very different style though, much more 'filmic'. (In before Davy.) It is a better film as a film I think - but Bela Lugosi is a timeless Count and so the theatrical English version still wins out for me, he makes it a classic.
That's so right about the Marx Brothers' films digi - it's like having a seat at one of their shows and priceless for it! ('The party of the first part...' )

The Marx Brothers toured their shows for years to make sure everything worked and all the laughs hit. If you watch the first couple of Marx Brothers films, which were made at infancy of film editing, Groucho throws out a punchline and holds for the laugh he knows he is getting. That would all change shortly but to see that is kind of remarkable.

Withnail and I. I vaguely remember this one from movie evenings at my student halls 20 years ago with a friend of mine who was into random obscure British movies. I however had no recollection about anything in this movie. So I got the DVD and finally got around to it yesterday. I can understand why this is a cult movie. It also made me chuckle at times because I actually experienced a few things happening in the movie- the famous chicken scene for example happened in a similar fashion as a midnight head-scratcher when I once entered the student halls kitchen one night. Or my run in with the poachers. However. This is just not my type of humour. I have come across toxic people in real life, and I just felt constantly extremely sorry for the poor little guy victim. I also had things like the self-destructive behaviour happen to people I know, so it was just a bit too close for comfort. So, yes, this movie is certainly interesting and of course the performances are flawless. And there is McGann in his underwear. This also explains why my friend liked this movie back then. McGann fits right into the types of men she was swooning over back in the day. I should invite her to the appreciation society...

The Banana Splits movie.
The visuals of Fleegle, Bingo, Drooper and Snorky committing gory murders in front of a screaming live studio audience provided me with 86 minutes of terrific surrealist fun. I can remember the originals, and this horror update is just bizarre. I had a great time with it.

Knives Out is the drawing room murder mystery you have all been missing in your lives. A movie that owes a huge debt to Agatha Christie, Sleuth, The Last of Sheila and Bergerac but manages to be its own thing. The less you know, the better.

"I have my opinion, but I think you're going to follow your heart..."
I also watched 'Knives Out', which was a great way to end November and, despite maybe being five or ten minutes too long, maybe one of the best films I've seen in a while!
