Well, I've finally returned to you lovely people, and with, I figured I'd bring back some threads from the BF forums that can now get some fresh viewpoints.
So, I was wondering, as a 'This likely won't happen but why not discuss anyway' exercise, what would be a manga or anime that you think could make the jump to audio? Maybe an intricate sci-fi dramedy like Steins Gate, an over the top 30s fantasy-gangster romp like Baccano or even Victoriana Gothic with a slight comic twist like Black Butler.
And before someone mentions it as happened last time, let's not forget Big Finish have reverse engineered games, comics and a puppet show into audio plays, so the medium of origin is not a reason to dismiss or exclude this from being talked about.
Share your thoughts down below!

And yes, if you'd like, you can even throw out a casting suggestion. Nick for this part or Syl for that etc etc you get the point.

There's something comforting about the thought of Sailor Moon done in audio. Like the perfect thing to listen to on a rainy day. Katy Manning as Luna and Colin Baker as Artemis. The girl who played Dorothy in Wizard of Oz who's name escapes me as Sailor Moon. Juliet Landau as any one of the awesome female villains in the series. Warren Brown or James Joyce as Tuxedo Mask. It just seems like a good fit to me.

Shoulda mentioned Fullmetal Alchemist. Pulpy sci-fi fantasy with a myriad of characters, monsters and arcs? Yep, right up BF's alley. Possible casting is a little trickier... some definites off the top of my head:
Peter Davison could be Hohenheim, has the right kind of wearied, paternal voice. Sort of fittingly, Sarah Sutton has a warmth and maternal element that fits Trisha. Sophie Aldred as Hawkeye. Tough lady, good with weapons - she fits. Paul McGann as Fuhrer Bradley. He could easily pull off charming yet commanding and respectable. Janet Fielding as Izumi. Definitely got the... vocality and temper for the part. Nicholas Briggs as Scar. Can do brooding and his voice, as we all know, has a lot of presence.
And Tom Baker as Father Cornello, if only as a nod to his origins as a monk and diehard Catholic.

Of course, one cast decision I think is absolutely, dead set, beyond any questioning: Colin Baker as Major Armstrong. Seriously, imagine these lines coming out of Colin's mouth... www.youtube.com/watch?v=vSCmfIl-sHgGold doesn't even begin to describe it!

As for Edward Elric.... that's decidely trickier to set down. If he were a little younger, maybe Matthew Waterhouse.

Robotech. With the original TV cast. That would be my dream line.
The Japanese have been doing audio dramas for ages. They've always recognized that their seiyuu are by their very nature voice actors, so why not utilize them in original audio drama tie-ins and increase those record sales? (And then later CD sales, and I guess MP3 sales nowadays.)
Robotech was what got me into anime and will always be my favorite, and since Harmony Gold has not had a very good track record of getting new Robotech animation finished, why not bring the original voice actors into the studio and start doing some of these projects as audio dramas? Heck, I'd be thrilled with them translating and rerecording the Japanese Macross audio dramas!
But as it was recently pointed out in the Stargate thread, audio dramas just aren't very popular in the US. Every now and then I'd try to rally people around the idea back when Robotech.com used to have message boards, and no one ever bit. Least of all the Harmony Gold staff.
I realize Big Finish could probably never get the American cast to England to record these, and I'm sure I would adjust to recastings. Ideally I'd like it if they could at least get just one or two of the original cast and then surround them with new characters. The Robotech universe is big enough for infinite side stories. But the idea of my favorite anime series in the amazingly talented hands of Big Finish would just bring a tear of joy to my eye.

Heh, funny you bring up Robotech as that was a main one from the old BF Forum version of this thread. Of course, someone pointed out the rights nightmare, as well as the upcoming movie, as potential hindrances.

Of course I'm no lawyer so I might be completely mistaken, but Harmony Gold's been able to make new comics and novels using the Macross characters, so I would imagine that would apply to audios as well. And even if it didn't, there are only legal issues with the Macross part; they could do stories centered around the Southern Cross or Mospeada portions with no problems at all. Plus as I mentioned before, there's always room for side stories in the same universe with new characters. As for the Sony movie deal, there's been so little reported on that I can't even begin to speculate on what affect it could have on anything.

I saw this subject and at first ignored it, I am no fan of manga.
From an outsiders point of view, manga seems extremely sexist, turning every female character I've ever seen into some kind of under age dream girl.
Given this, I would be against, even disturbed by the idea of BF audio's being made into manga.

I am disturbed that you think this. Manga/Anime is not one thing just as Western comics are not one thing. They target every demographic including adult women and cover every genre: from school setting, sports, drama, sci-fi, fantasy, romance, comedy, supernatural, slice of life, work type dramas, etc. And while yes there are some creepy anime/manga out there just like there are some creepy Western series the majority is not like this. And in fact as a woman there are way more series I feel targeted directly at me then I feel the same of Western Comics. I mean is there a demographic aimed at adult women in Western Comics? Not that I know of. Sorry to rant at you but one of my pet peeves is when people stereotype manga/anime when they really don't know anything about it.

I said I was an outsider and no fan, I also used the word "seems". I didn't characterise manga, I said how it seems to me.
That it appeals to you as a woman and that it appears from what you say to cater to a wider audience that other forms of animation is great.
But there is a but, whilst I have not sought out manga of any sort, I cannot recall even once seeing a manga portrayal of a woman that wasn't sexualised, perhaps I have been unfortunate in that this is all I have seen, and it's just not true, but I've yet to see any evidence to the contrary.

It doesn't matter if you are going to "insult" something people enjoy you should at least know more about it. When I don't know about something then I don't say anything. I certainly don't judge things I am not familiar with. And if you only saw sexualized portrayals of women in manga & anime then perhaps that is a reflection of the series you looked up not a reflection on anime/manga. Edit: But just off the top of my head: Sailor Moon & Studio Ghibli Films are well know anime that do not have sexualized female characters & in fact have strong female characters.

I was not intending, and I really don't believe I was insulting manga or you. Saying something "seems" is to say that it "gives the impression of being something or having a particular quality" it doesn't say that it "is". I know I am not qualified to say it "is".
I have never sought out manga, and to be explicit I have never read or watched any manga of any sort, ignoring my thoughts on it, the style just doesn't appeal, but then I've never read or been a fan of any comic stuff (of any style except Beano etc) even on the big screen.
Your comment that I insult manga has the effect of insulting me, it characterises me as small minded, but doesn't address the concern I raise, and the concern is genuine (i.e. I really do have that concern) and the concern will not go away unless at some point I am able to develop an alternative point of view, knowing that mature, intelligent female fans of magna exists goes some way to suggest to me I need to think again, but does not actually address my concern, which is that manga portrayal of women is exclusively sexual.
I would be all to happy to have my views widened on this subject, especially as manga has become so important and mainstream in sci-fi/fantasy circles I identify myself with, but merely assertively dismissing my concerns as invalid doesn't do that.

No No No its too bizarre for BF to do and what next Family Guy and Robot Chicken!
Seriously though you'd have to put age cautions on it and even then it might generate a negative feedback

I don't wish to be rude, but I don't like the direction you two are taking my thread. I simply set it up as a means for those were into manga and anime on these forums to just have a fun chit chat about dream projects. If you want to have debates on the sexualixation of the medium, kindly move it to another thread or resolve it on your own pages. I'm sure neither of you meant anything by it, but I'm not comfortable with this direction.
