Hi there, apologies in advance if a post like this has been made before.
Is there any kind of guide of how to integrate the Benny audios and books. I'm aware that Life During Wartime leads into Death and the Daleks, but I don't really know anything about the Fifth Axis.
I've just finished season 3, so is there stuff I need to read up on before going any further?
Best wishes,
James

Well Billy2's timeline gives the running order. sadly so many of the books are oop but I believe few of them are essential. I did read a fuide on it somewhere but darned if I can remember where. Wish I could as I'm up to 3.2 and like you I've got Life During Wartime and know that ones essential, but don't know about the others.

I've been using this as a guide: www.drwhoguide.com/bennybk.htmI will note that I don't own The Squire's Crystal, The Infernal Nexus, or The Glass Prison, and haven't found any of the aforementioned at a price I'm willing to pay, so I'm relying on an online synopsis for those books. The site also has a guide to the Doctor Who New Adventure Books that feature Benny with the Seventh Doctor, which you can find here: www.drwhoguide.com/books.htm#VIRGIN

Speaking of the out of print books, in the latest Vortex my question about them is answered. Work is ongoing to get them out as digital products, though it doesn't seem as though physical reprints are in the works. As for new books, Nick said there are no plans as sales were not strong enough to justify continuing them.
So for this of us completionists - we'll either have to settle for digital versions of the ones we are missing, or take out a second mortgage.

I'll happily take a digital version!

I'll happily take a digital version! I mean, ideally accompanied by a digital set of audios *hint hint* The letter in Vortex says that they are trying to get that done, but there are obstacles they need to overcome such as compelling they people they are trying to reach to respond.

Maybe sales aren't strong enough because the earlier releases aren't available, Hmmm?

Really, you can enjoy the Benny range without reading the books that are unavailable. I certainly have. All the audios are available. Series 1-11 is CD only, but the bundles save a lot of money.

Completely agree. Though to be fair, there are a couple of spots with the earlier out of print books that will cause a few seconds of confusion when listening to the early releases, but nothing that will take away from being able to enjoy them. I think ink some of us are wanting the books more because they were really well written and we want complete collections.

(Not sure if this is an appropriate place to put this, but wasn't sure where else to)
I am conflicted... I have some of the Benny books and part of me wants to get the rest that are available because of that, but another part of me feels that there is no point if I can't get them all, but then there is also no point having just a few. My obsessive collection needs have created a paradox and I don't know what to do about it.

You can get some of the background from the stories themselves, and some from articles about Benny on the web.

Sure, I'd love to have the few that are out of print and only available for exorbitant prices, but I'm not willing to pay the exorbitant prices, so I have to get what I can get. And I say that as a person who is generally a "completist."

Couple of times during series 2-4 I felt like I'd jumped into the middle of something. It put me on the back foot, and certainly spoiled my enjoyment. I gave up on Benny with series 4. Then, tempted by a later sale, I picked up again and am now well into series 7... That feeling of missing out on essential narrative hasn't happened again. I do like the series, and so far it just has just got better and better, so I'd say Benny's still worth the effort. But I wouldn't claim that the gaps aren't detrimental to the listening-only experience.

Not everyone will be bothered to do so.
And while the stories do give some background, it still makes you wonder what else you may have missed.

My obsessive collection needs have created a paradox and I don't know what to do about it. I'd say that if you are interested in reading the books than get them. Sure you'll end up with a few gaps, but if you hold off too long more of the books will go out of print and likely come to be very expensive on the used market. Better to read what you can than missing out completely.
To clarify, I have no idea whether any of the books still available from BF will go out of print in the near future.

If I wonder what I've missed, I go looking to find out. I've done that with other stories on other subjects as well. That's just the way I am. If I feel I'm missing background and want to know more, I go looking for it and then listen again, rather than let it detract from my enjoyment. And I'd been interested in Benny for long enough before I got the audio series that I had the background from reading about her in web articles. No doubt I'd feel more fully informed if I could read all the books. But I can't get what's not available.

Buy the books at a high price on ebay. Read. Sell the books for a high price on ebay. Unfortunately, there are NO other ways of getting a hold of reading copies, right?
