Do you feel that, on some level, professional critics of any type of media should have some experience in said field? Not necessarily having made a feature film or published a novel, but be familiar with the processes by which these things are created, and how those can in turn play a part in the quality of a piece of art/media.
After all, Ebert wrote B movies before he was a critic, and in reverse, Paul Schrader was a critic before he wrote Taxi Driver.

No. I don't think it's a prerequisite at all. Some degree of credibility is preferable though. So often I see reviewers online who have rudimentary knowledge of their field. If I'm reading a film reviewer then I'd like them to know their Tarkovsky from their Jodorowsky. That said, when I read reviews I'm looking for something a bit more in-depth and insightful, to frame rather than shape opinion. Many casual readers on the other hand may just be looking for "is this good or not?" and they're the ones who the stars/points system of reviews work better for. I like my reviewers to be knowledgeable and literate, both oft in short supply on the internet where people can call themselves critics but are often bloggers.
