It was alright. Not great or anything. Liked episode 1. 2 was a little hard to follow; too many of the voices sounded similar. 3 I liked quite a bit; had a more intimate ton..... I think River's apperance in Doom Coliation will probably be more hands on - they can't play the same gimmick twice, after all. My guess is either, the next time River has to constantly hide to avoid him while helping from the shadows, or maybe she can collaborate with a companion, but not the Doctor directly. It'll be interesting to see how they get around it in each encounter. Maybe a story where she can only communicate by coating the walls in post-it notes. And if plain old memory erasure aint your bag Elka, maybe a negated timeline that River remembers, but the Doctor doesn't, and as he fades away, he laments the tragedy that he'll never be remember their time together. That, or she could take to wearing a fake moustache.

With a confrontation between River and The Silence being inevitable, I wonder if River will meet Tasha Lem? Who knows - maybe she sets the two of them up for Tasha (with Eleven offstage) to care of The Doctor when she's gone?

No Tasha Lem please. I can't stand that character.
(Boy, have I been a downer on this thread. Sorry, guys!)

I found this one...a little uneven. Part 1 was a little uninspired/dull, Part 2 was fun, Part 3 was disjointed and really was not holding my attention (I had to listen 3x to get through it), but Part 4 was pretty excellent.
Not a bat-out-of-the-park intro to BF for River, but there's certainly promise. I'll be picking up future releases, if they make them.

I thought this was really, really good for a first outing, with a strong opening story and a strong ending story. Alex Kingston was superb, naturally. What a joy it was to get to take in the Christmas episode followed by this later the same day. I think the only thing I didn't really like about it was Bertie Potts - it was brilliant to have Alex and Alex together but I wish Alexander Vlahos had gotten a different kind of role because he's just way too cool for me to easily accept as the sort of thing Bertie turned out to be. :-)

Still I kind of know what you mean. Personally I am happy to hear him in any role but maybe I'd rather have people's first introductions to him be Dorian. At least on audio. He may actually be best known as Mordred and now Phillipe in Versailles.

Vlahos actually took me out of the story a bit I'm afraid. His voice is so synonymous now with Dorian that I kept expecting Bertie to be a nom-de-plume and we'd hear Dorian's inner thoughts as a voiceover. In NO way am I saying he was bad. Just that the voice was distracting. Perhaps shaking it up with a different regional accent or something would have worked better.
It's great to hear Alex Kingston actually get to be well rounded and not just be the cool, slightly ambiguous supporting role. She gets a lot more to do here and that's welcome. Was very happy she wasn't just the flirty and cool River of TV. She was much more interesting than that.
A niggle...I'm really not liking the theme tune. Howard Carter's theme tunes have been pretty poor throughout the past couple of years. They're all very similar - overly bombastic and in this case quite ill-suited for the stories.

I'll also admit that I, too, kept waiting for "Bertie" to get tired of the act, and for Dorian to grab a drink and slip back in to form. I also assumed, until the throwaway explenation at the end, that Bertie had survived because he's, well, Dorian, and hadn't time traveled to the party, he'd just lived until it got started.

wht did everyone think of the theme song? did briggs write this one? i liked it i was surprised how different it was to other big finish them songs. big finish has excellent themes jago and lite foot counter measures etc. there something different about this one cant quite put my finger on it. plus i expected something faster paced for river. yjis one works just fine i think its a good theme for river,

It was mixed way too loud. Had to turn down my speakers several notches while the theme played and then turn them back up again so I could hear what was going on when it was done.
Otherwise, I quite liked it. Wish it had some of the Who theme sprinkled in, but ah well.

Finished Boundless Sea. And I'm mixed...Alexander Vlahos is good, but I must admit, I kind of felt too much Dorian in him. I think I'd rather have heard Benny in this story rather than River.

Finished off I Went to a Marvelous Party. It was better than the first, Alexander Vhalos was still the highlight for me. The murder mystery wasn't particularly interesting. not sure if it wasn't good, or there wasn't enough time on it.
Now that I'm sitting listening to the third episode, I don't like the mixing on the theme song, way too loud. And the theme itself is mixed as well.

Going against the grain of this thread, I really liked the theme. I thought it was rather James Bond, which is a peculiar but somehow appropriate fit for River.
I'll concede that it might've been mixed a little loud compared to the actual episode audio though.

I don't even think its bad music. It's just that like most of Howard Carter's BF work - including his versions of the Doctor Who theme itself - it's bombastic and not particularly well fitting to the respective range. I can understand wanting to replicate the style of Murray Gold since River is Nu-Who but Murray can tone it down beautifully and his work always seems in keeping with the story.
To be fair to Howard though, it's not the BF musical theme that has annoyed me most this year which would be dropping the WONDERFUL Iris Wildthyme theme for that new generic tune on Wildthyme Reloaded. That was credited to Ioan Morris & Rhys Downing. Not enamoured with the change to the wonderful Counter Measures theme either.

Signs is done, and I'm still...middling. Though it did have a character defining moment to add to things I don't like about River. Not since her confrontation with the Dalek in Big Bang, have I felt so...dislike of the character.

So...just finished the last story. And it's ok. I can't give this a fair review, I fell asleep at the climax. But I do think I've come out the other side liking River less than going in.

I've only listened to the first story so far but enjoyed it. I echo the sentiments of others regarding Alex Vlahos as Bertie, which is a shame because he is a great actor but is too recognisable as Dorian (oh no, not typecast already poor boy).
Looking forward to hearing the next one soon.
Cheers
Tony

Of course I've also now seen him in quite a few others things so I don't just associate him with Dorian at all. I feel the roles he plays are so different that I can easily separate him from Dorian (although on TV not audio).
