In the 1st story "The Boundless Sea" this is my Query{Spoiler} We know this story takes place one year after the discovery of Tutankhamuns Tomb,so that makes it 1923. When River escapes from the tomb she goes in pursuit of prim or prym, sitting in the car she shouts "KEYS" the keys are handed to her,and then we hear the sound of the key in the ignition, then the engine starts?.Did cars havs ignition keys in 1923? BTW this is my favourite story of the four.
Most Fords did. It wasn't an ignition in the sense that we have now, but it turned on the electrics so you could crank the engine over from inside or outside. Most people just left the key in the slot though. Cheers! Thanks for that.

So... Can we have river vs benny on a dig! Briggsy seems to hint towards it on the latest podcast. That said, I may be reading too much into a slight cough.

Okay, my turn. I'm a bit late to the party on this one but I caught up with other BF recent titles first before diving into this one and only finished listening to the Extras this evening...
When it was announced I pre-ordered, and then turned my spoiler guard on, and ignored everything after that.
Another point I want to make is that I've been saving the Dorian series up... I've listened to only like 3 of the shorts, hearing enough to expect that I will really like the series and deciding to wait 'til it's all out and listen to it then. So while I have bought them all, I have been banking them for future listening. So I actually did not spot Bertie being played by Alexander Vlahos until I listened to the extras. Nor Mr. Siddig being in this.
So what did I think? Well episode one was a bit standard story, but a little bit promising... although I thought it seemed a bit abrupt for River to switch modes from reclusive academic, to gung-ho field person, so quickly. I thought Ep 2 was OK. Episode 3 I did like, but at times it bothered me a bit... I really didn't buy the Ersatz Doctor and I was a bit disappointed that it took River so long to come around. At least she did though! And until the Extras I didn't realize it was all a two-hander... so at least it was effective. Episode 4 was the corker though, due to my avoiding spoilers I had forgotten the fact that McGann was in it, so I was delighted when he showed up. And the story was good. I do remember having some kind of bothersome nitpick moment when listening to it but I can't remember it now. Probably some Time War thing.
I'm glad I wasn't the only one who thought the theme tune was mixed WAY TOO F-ING LOUD.
I was hoping for some kind of mention of Benny in this, especially from 8. Alas... I really do hope Benny and River's paths will cross though.

The reviews they've plucked, bar Tony's quote which shows a more measured evaluation, are a bit too...gushy but I have to say - I thin I enjoyed this set a lot more than I realised while listening. I've remembered it a lot clearer than I do a lot of BF after 2 weeks so it made an impact. I really liked the two-hander with Samuel West unlike some others and I think anyone wanting River to "meet" Eight won't be upset with the last story as they both have sizable parts, there's no cheap retcons and Alex plays off Paul brilliantly. I think the set improved with every story. The first one, the Jenny Colgan one, doesn't feature a very good characterization of River. I mentioned earlier I thought Alex was a bit flat in places but if she can be as good as she is later in the set I really have to think she was struggling to find "her" River in Colgan's dialogue and writing. I was impressed the set had quite a strong arc throughout it and despite the different writers it never felt disjointed. Good script editing. As I said earlier, I'd love this to be River without ANY Doctor involvement going forward. She's a damn strong character and doesn't need him as a crutch. Though reading DWM's Alex interview, she wants David Tennant and Matt Smith for future boxes so she disagrees!

I should add, as he's very much a fave i these parts, the new Doctor Who Magazine has a half page interview with Alex Vlahos too.

Not as strong as the War Doctor release but enjoyable enough that I will buy the next box set. My favorite was definitely the last one as I felt it did deliver on the 8th Doctor meeting River. Actually I love the idea of River helping the Doctor earlier but him never realizing it was her. I wonder if Mrs Spritz will show up for Doom Coalition . And even though Eight played a big part in the story I'd argue that River was still the hero which I enjoyed. And on a more shallow level I also just enjoyed hearing Vlahos and Mcgann together not just in the same box set but in the same story. They even interacted a bit which I did not expect. Of course Vlahos was playing an exceedingly annoying character lol but he did it very well (and now that I finally heard the entire box set no he sounded absolutely nothing like Dorian to me). And I am kind of glad the Bertie in the first story turned out to be a clone (because I kind of liked him and now I can at least believe that Bertie sort of existed....) As for the other 3 they all had aspects I enjoyed and aspects I disliked so I wouldn't even know how to rank them. But special mention does have to go to Samuel West who was also excellent in the 3rd story. I have to say the strongest aspect of this box set was definitely it's supporting cast. But I also highly enjoyed Alex Kingston. I also liked her performance a lot in the latest Christmas episode but it was very nice hearing River in stories not written by Moffat. I think the writers did a very good job with her characterization. As for the theme song which seems to have garnered a lot of discussion, I liked it but what I didn't like was at times it was mixed too loudly on the audio.

Having read Alex Vlahos' interview in the new DWM, I'm not surprised he got to work with McGann - he's a big, big McGann fanboy. He talks about how he doesn't really follow other BF Who Doctors but does follow Eight's adventures closely and was a big fan of the TV movie as a boy. I think he'd have been gutted to be in the story but not meet The Doctor. He also talks about potentially playing The Doctor himself...cool wee interview.

I actually wouldn't want this. I mean I'd be super happy with Vlahos doing more Doctor Who as another character but not sure if I'd want Dorian as a permanent companion. Maybe as a one off companion in a special...but even that I am not entirely sure about.

I think having someone with a stark contrast in morals would be interesting. and Dorian is a pretty good example, and certainly a stark contrast to Eight's romanticism. I think he'd work great in the early Time War Eighth Doctor.

I think he'd work great in the early Time War Eighth Doctor. That's not my issue with it. I agree that type of character might make an interesting companion for the doctor. But I wouldn't want that character to be Dorian. I am not trying to devalue the companion. Because often it is the companion not the Doctor that draws me into the story but Dorian is the main character of his own range. I don't think he needs to be second to the Doctor. And not to mention while I know the Dorian character turned up in a Bernice Summerfield story (which I can finally listen to now that I bought the CD boxset) not sure if I want to think of the Dorian of confessions in the same world as Doctor Who. Even if he is. I like to keep my supernatural/gothic characters a bit separate from my aliens caused it characters ala Doctor Who. Like I said I may accept a one off (and only if it was a straight historical). Actually an early Dorian showing up in a Jago and Litefoot story would be way more interesting for me personally (but only if its a special...because I am way behind on the box sets lol).

Went to Barnes & Noble to see if they had it because I remembered they carried the magazine. Well they carry it alright but 2 issues behind. Well that was a waste of a trip.

I know. I never find the current DWM in the stores. It's always a month or two old and way too much money.

The River boxset arrived this morning. Happy to say cast pics and liner notes are included in this range's booklets. I posted about Alex Kingston saying she wants to do more of these with Matt and David but Matt Fitton teases in his liners for Disc 4 that Ms K also expressed interest in working her way through older incarnations too
