I know little of Gallifray or Gallifrey in terms of the audio series.

It is a fantastic series. I may be a little biased as I work in government, but I really enjoyed the political intrigue of the first three series. The box sets have been great fun, advancing the story nicely and developing the characters more than they might have been had they remained in Doctor centric stories.

I'm not much for political intrigues outside of this series, but it's one of my very favorite Big Finish ranges. It can be that good at drawing the listener in. Spirit is a story I still like more than almost anything Big Finish has put out. Lalla Ward is consistently fantastic (she really makes me think she should be president of something every minute of Gallifrey) as are Louise Jameson (and the friendship between Romana and Leela) and Mary Tamm... So if three or four of the 4th Doctor's most important screen partners weren't enough, there are some outstanding stories as well, at least in my opinion. Also, even though early releases aren't downloadable, they can still be surprisingly economical. I was a little apprehensive about CD ordering at first but they traveled half a world and arrived in great shape. Really, really glad I got these!

And Miles Richardson as Braxiatel alone is worth the price of admission. This is probably one of the best written characters in any Big Finish production.
Narvin is another character who has really stood out over the years.

As a Eighth Doctor fan, and knowing that the Gallifray series is NOT A Doctor series... what connections do they show/represent at all to the Doctors... specifically mine?

Ugh... the moment you realize that your spell check mispelt the thread name... ugh
So I know Spirit makes reference to Zagreus, but is it a passing comment or a whole convo?

As a Eighth Doctor fan, and knowing that the Gallifray series is NOT A Doctor series... what connections do they show/represent at all to the Doctors... specifically mine? Very little to do directly with any of the Doctors. Leela/Romana might mention the 4th Doctor occasionally but he doesn't figure in directly. Well, you do meet an alternate-universe Sixy in one story, but that really isn't the same. And another story sets up one of the classic 4th Doctor stories (won't spoil it any further than that) but as far as the 8th Doctor, I don't recall anything.

The only link Gallifrey has to the 8th Doctor is that its set after Zagreus

I'm one of the folks who don't love the Gallifrey series, I have to admit. There are things that I like about it. The acting is great and one or two stories are really fantastic. The relationship that grows between Leela and Romana is lovely to witness. However, there are plot holes you could drive a starship through as well as some of the relationships seeming completely unbelievable. As for the political intrigue, well, sometimes it works for me but a lot of the time it doesn't. I just never felt like any of it made sense to an advanced society that is supposed to have lasted for millennia.
But I seem to be in the minority around here. I just thought you should hear another opinion.

Honestly when I ask for opinions on here, fb, or the old Big Finish forum, I always assume I'm going to exclusively get answers from BF worshippers. Personally I love me some BF, but they can't be on point all the time... so to hear other views is refreshing. That being said, I'm happy majority is seeming to like it.

I love the series in general, but at times I just want to slap Romana, sometimes they twist her character to unlikely extremes to advance the story in the way they wish.

I bought series 1 and listened to it long before I bought the rest of the series and thought it was okay. But then I bought the rest of the CDs when they were on sale and listened straight through and LOVED it. I've gotten up to series 5, and have found the stories really interesting and intriguing. Definitely planning to get the rest of the series at some point and hoping Big Finish will be coming out with more in the future. And Miles Richardson as Braxiatel alone is worth the price of admission. This is probably one of the best written characters in any Big Finish production. So true. I can't get enough Brax. Narvin is another character who has really stood out over the years. Another great character, yes. Truth is, I love the interactions between all the main characters in the series and the changes in their relationships over time. The Gallifrey series is well worth investing in.

Personally I think the first three series are some of the best work that Big Finish have ever done, and after that it all gets a bit routine, for my tastes. The stories are still pretty good, usually, but I'm just not a big fan of the change in direction in series four, and then what feels like a new direction with each subsequent series.
I still buy them, I still enjoy them (usually), I just think the series lost some of it's magic once it took a new direction with series four, and never really got it back again.

I did love the first three series, but I disagree with you in that I think the subsequent series are also pretty great.

Agreed mostly as I'm particularly fond of the first three series also, and also rank them very highly among Big Finish releases in general. Not quite as sure what to think about the rest - I think the better part of the strength of the series is interesting stories and strong characters and their relationships and I think all of those carry well into later releases. I do get some sense of diversion when the later series begin, but it might be what comes with the territory when aspiring to find a way to keep the range fresh, and my appreciation of those later releases might have been somewhat blunted by binge listening whereas the earlier series I took more time with, spacing them out somewhat while waiting on the next set of CDs to arrive. All of the Gallifrey series still goes very high up on my list of things to get another listen, and chances are good I'll like Gallifrey IV even better next time around, as with many stories.

Yeah, I had the same feeling about Benny Summerfield after Dead Man's Switch. Panacea is a good place to leave the series if you feel you've had your fill since it wraps everything up in a manner that only Gallifrey could really do. It really took off for me when they introduced Pandora into Time Lord mythology.

But...but...Panacea ends on a cliff hanger! How could you not want to listen to more?
