Ian also mentions trips to Byzantium and China, which occurred in the BBC Past Doctor Adventure novels Byzantium! and The Eleventh Tiger (in the latter Barbara comes out with the Kung Fu Fighting song). All three of them, Ian, Barbara AND the Doctor did actuslly. Guess what I'm listening to on YouTube right now.

I enjoyed this one, much more than The Age Of Endurance. Yes, we knew that Josper was a mole, but I still enjoyed it. And I really liked the setting and the ape-creature things (I can't think of their name at the the moment.} Jemma was ok, better than the last story. I thought she improved throughout the story.

Same, I did think this had a slow start but it improved as it went on. The world was interesting & despite knowing what Jospa was going to turn out to be I was still interested in his storyline. Vicki and Ian had some good scenes, the Doctor & Barbara not so much. I do hope they use Barbara more in next year's storylines.

Maureen O'Brien sadly referred to William Russell's Big Finish work strictly in the past tense on a recent podcast. And given that she and Peter recorded a four-pack of stories, I doubt Ian and Barbara will be returning in 2017.

Could just mean we'll be getting an Ian recast news announcement at some point in the near future. Or that they've recorded a handful of Season 1 & 2 stories to trickle out, much like how they've recorded much of Tom Baker's stuff years in advance of when they're scheduled to be released.

From the outset, the gambit is set. A snake in the bush. Ready to strike. What follows is a incredibly tense two hour drama in which the TARDIS team is as vulnerable and unknowing as the apes in the trees. Big Finish knows that we know the conventions of the 'extra' regular tale - and smashes them immedietly. Things are bad. Things are very bad. Even the narrator is oblivious. And how will the TARDIS team make it out? When and will the penny drop? And it does, and it's forgotten. Ian sinking into the mire isn't the worst thing that is happening.
A 'conventional' tale - in which our heroes step into the adventure, with the dogs already at their heels, would be unnerving, but Big Finish go further off kilter with the wonderful reliased society of the Arunde. It just adds to the tension. The are nicely reliased - and as with, these aren't just neccessairly characters for the adventure, but people in their own right, in the traditions of the Hartnell era and their story personal and epic.
It's all strange and unknown. Josper himself is a nice antagonist, his RP voice a nice black joke of the underdogs and rebels and suppressed of the era, making things further off kilter. We do get shreds of the boy he is, but as with the society, he's twisted beyond recognition. In different circumstances....but these aren't. The fact that he does, to an extent, like these people all the more tragic. But, it wouldn't and couldn't last. His society doesn't allow that. All there is that moment of excictment over the possibilities of the TARDIS between himself and The Doctor.
An instant classic and amongst Big Finish's best. 2016 has been an incredibly strong year of a company of exceptional standards (and increased pressure with all the revival releases).

Anyone with the CD have the individual episode titles? There's nothing on the CD either just part numbers.

I'd imagine the lack of episode titles was to maintain the suspense. (I'm a download only customer, though)

That's odd. Maybe the writer wasn't familiar with the tradition, since he's only previously written for the Second, Third and Sixth Doctors.

There could be some titles generic enough not to spoil any surprises yet still reflect the episodes. Of Death seems to be a popular phrase. These are the episode titles for The Doctor's Tale: 1. The Lord of Misrule 2. The White Hart 3. Sanctuary 4. The Empty Crown Can you infer any specific events or unexpected developments from these four titles?

The Fifth Traveller is a very off-kilter and different story. I'd imagine Big Finish didn't want to reveal too much.

There could have been titles like The Creatures in the Trees, Meeting of Minds, The Rain of Death or The Traitor in the Midst. That last one could have referred to the alien race on the planet.

I like your titles, but with a story like this, I think it's best to reveal as little as possible going in.

That's fine, but for me I'll go with these for lack of any others: 1. The Creatures in the Trees 2. Meeting of Minds 3. The Rain of Death 4. The Traitor in the Midst
