Surprised there isn't a thread of this. So yeah, thoughts on the boxset. Now look, I love India and she delivers like always, but this first set.... was really a lot of okay and nothing more. Lamentation felt less like a story and more like a ton of tedious set up and fill in, Shadow was a decent like jungle thriller but felt very routine, House of Pollard was the strongest story, certainly the most emotionally resonant, and Solution was a decent wrap up with some exciting sequences and a genuinely compelling idea in the form of life as an ultimate virus, but it felt very typical ´big epic' finale when perhaps it should've been slower and more pensive.
Also, the theme felt rushed, more of a seed or germ of an idea for a musical piece and not a finished product. I feel Charley deserved something more well rounded. No disrespect towards BF, but this really felt like a B project.

Really? Nobody has anything to say on the first set? Not even a I like or I don't like?

I felt it put some distance between her and the travels with the Doctor, I liked the chance to say farewell to her family but ended up with no strong sense of direction. I thought James Joyce (if my memory is correct) put in a decent shift

I have to confess the idea of a Charley spin off seemed to me like an idea that was born of a wish from Nick to keep working with India Fisher rather than anything else. And then there was a huge delay meaning that any momentum that there may have been from her emotional DW farewell was lost. And then another big delay for a second season.
So yes, B project certainly sums up the whole thing for me. I'm sure it's unfair to say, but this seems to me like one of Nicks ideas that he should have either let go or passed on to another writer.

The best thing about the first box set was India Fisher.
I am a big Charley Pollard fan and was very excited by the prospect of her having her own series, unfortunately the first series didn't really match my expectations.
With there being such a long delay I wish they had reintroduced the character and resolved the Vyran threat within the main range. I think the first and fourth story from the boxset would have suited a main range release with the Seventh Doctor and Ace. I would have loved to hear Charley and Ace working together without the Doctor's knowledge.
As stated at the time on the old forum, Charley felt like a passenger in her own series rather than a driving force. There were a lot a good ideas in this series and all the stories were enjoyable. I just think there was a better way....and the physical packaging is just plain bland.

When the 2nd series was being recorded, there was mention of a 3rd series being recorded straight after!Does anyone know if this actually happened?

Finished listening to this today; it's a disappointing box set, as feel I enjoyed the interviews at the end more than the stories themselves. As a side note - what is it with reviewers, they seem to be ever reluctant to score anything below 7/10. The actors were great, but I wouldn't give this more than a 4/10.

If so, one of these answers for not giving lower than 7/10 ratings might be the correct one... a) Uncle Nick doesn't like negativity and will turn up at the reviewer's house with a sink plunger wrapped in barbed wire. b) The reviewers really did enjoy every story they reviewed c) The reviewers won't get sent any more freebies to review. Take your pick!

Take your pick! Without a question mark yep it was slightly ambiguous, but glad you interpreted it as a question. I guess the next question is what is the role of a reviewer. Is it to be 'influencers' on what we as customers buy, or are they just a way of BF adding superlatives on their product pages. Seems little point scoring anything out of ten, when 1-6 aren't used. Personally I only ever read reviews after I've listened as otherwise think they could affect my own listening enjoyment. Though I've learnt the only true gauge for BF reviews is either this forum or http://www.the**********.com

Charlotte Pollard Series 1 has a combined score of 7.3 on there.

I seem to recall reading on this forum that a Nick had stated on Facebook that the plan is for the Eighth Doctor to appear in her next boxset...

That really doesn't seem much different than how I rate things in DU polls, everything gets an 8-10 while 6 is reserved for a couple of infamous disappointments like The Audio That's Best Forgot The Boy That Time Forgot.

So why do some people think that 6/10 is a bad score? It's not! 1/10 is a bad score.

Not sure where you reside, but think it's part of British culture not to make a fuss, complain, be rude so think you're not alone by still being complimentary of releases we don't enjoy. Probably even blaming ourselves that we didn't enjoy it rather than criticising the production. Though this does highlight a flaw when we give marks alongside reviews as someones 7/10 could be another's 4/10.
