The werewolf potion
1897: In revenge for Quentin Collins' mistreatment of his wife, Jenny, Magda Rakosi (Jenny's sister) decides to place the old gypsy curse of the werewolf upon him. This is a replica of the same curse placed on Count Petofi for failing to pay his debts to the gypsies, which Magda saw cast when she was a girl. Following Jenny's death, the Collinses refuse to allow her to be laid to rest in the gypsy tradition, so Magda and Sandor tell Quentin that Jenny will not rest in peace and that he will be placed under a curse. Quentin is haunted by Jenny's image and voice in his dreams, which point to his own death. The Rakois tell Quentin that they will lift the curse for $10,000. He has to borrow the money from Judith, now mistress of Collinwood, in return for his promise to leave Collinwood forever. After a vivid dream, where Jenny tries to give him the kiss of death, Quentin rushes to the Old House with the money. While Magda pretends to remove the curse, Sandor pours the potion Magda prepared into a goblet. Quentin, Magda and Sandor drink a toast to seal the deal, but Quentin acquires the true curse intended for him - the curse of the werewolf!

Silver Bullets. Both vampires and werewolves are vulnerable to silver bullets which are used to hunt them. Silver bullets also appear in a prophetic dream about the end of Quentin Collins. In Jamison Collins' dream in 1897, he learns from Quentin of three things that will herald Quentin's death (767). Quentin: Three things happened... if I could have changed any one of them, if I could have known what they meant while they were happening, maybe I wouldn't have died when I did... The first was the discovery of a silver bullet at Collinwood... and then the one person that could have helped me, who could have kept me alive, was murdered... The one person in this world that I truly loved turned against me. After that happened, there was practically no time left for Quentin Collins. (767)Magda Rakosi reloads her pistol outside Collinwood. When Magda departs from Collinwood, she retrieves her gun from a planter outside and reloads it with silver bullets to protect herself from the beast roaming the woods by the full moon. Shortly, she shoots the werewolf that she herself has created with her curse (765). Barnabas: It only takes a moment to die, only a moment for the whole future to be changed. Destroyed by one silver bullet in the hands of a gypsy (766). Barnabas makes Magda surrender the gun. He examines it and observes that one silver bullet is missing (766). Barnabas: Where's the other bullet? Magda: I lost it. Barnabas: How could you lose it? Magda: I don't know, I had six to begin with and then when I was loading the gun there were only five. I must have lost it somewhere, that's all. (766)Later, Edward walks into Collinwood looking troubled, and annouces a strange discovery to Judith (767). Judith examines the silver bullet found outside Collinwood. Edward: I found something rather curious on the path outside. At first I thought it was a coin the way it gleamed in the moonlight. Judith: What was it? Edward: Here, look at it. Judith: It's a bullet. Edward: But what's so curious about it is that it's a silver bullet. Judith: What would anyone want with a silver bullet? Some Other Occurrences of Silver Bullets --------------------------------------- 459-460 - Joshua Collins instructs the servant Riggs to have a silversmith make six silver bullets from a silver candelabra (1796). Joshua has learned in Boston that silver bullets can kill a vampire. 568- Barnabas plans to use silver bullets to protect Julia from another vampire (1968). 757- Magda Rakosi tells Laura Collins that Barnabas can be destroyed with silver bullets and agrees to help Laura obtain them (1897). 781- Edward Collins has six silver bullets made by Braithwaite & Sons (1897). 803- Edward retrieves the gun with silver bullets to hunt Barnabas (1897). 830- Quetin gives Magda a gun loaded with six silver bullets, to shoot him with if he breaks free from his shackles while he is a werewolf. Trask barges in and takes the gun from Magda (1897). 834- Count Petofi tells Edward that Magda knows where Barnabas is hiding, and gives Edward a gun loaded with silver bullets to hunt Barnabas with (1897). 1069- When Barnabas wakes from his coffin, the sheriff waits with a cross and silver bullets (1995). 1168- Lamar Trask gives Gerard Stiles a gun loaded with silver bullets (1840). In the movie House of Dark Shadows, Sheriff Patterson arms his men with crosses and silver bullets after consulting with Professor Stokes. Blooper(?): When Barnabas takes the pistol from Magda and inspects it, there may be only one bullet missing, whereas one silver bullet lost at Collinwood and one fired at the werewolf should mean that two are missing? (766)

Feather boa in Maine too...and all of the US. Bobob: We'd say feather boa in the UK too. Thanks for both replies. I figure that a feather boa is the kind of thing that could have local variant ways of referring to it.

Jenny Collins' dollsJenny Collins is the name of the sister of Magda Rakosi. A gypsy girl, Jenny was the fairest and happiest of the gypsy family. When she met and fell in love with Quentin Collins, her sister forbade he to reveal her background for fear that the Collins family would find some way to prevent their marriage. Quentin and Jenny were married and moved to Collinwood - and that's when Jenny's life fell apart. After Jenny bore him twin children, Quentin's roving eye fell on Laura Collins, his sister-in-law, and the two fled to Alexandria, leaving Jenny alone in with her hostile in-laws in Collinwood. She rapidly went insane, and was locked in the Tower Room. The twins were taken from her and were adopted out. Her servant, Beth Chavez, looked after her. When Quentin returned to Collinwood, his family told him that Jenny had left and they did not know where she was. In the meantime, Jenny had constructed a whole fantasy life for herself, including that she and Quentin were still happily married and and lived with their two children. As this fantasy made her happy and quiet, Beth supplied Jenny with two dolls that became the focus of her love, representing her children. But after Quentin's real return, Jenny became disturbed and escaped several times, always being drawn back to her children. And she may have remained happy in her fantasy, but during her final escape from the Tower Room, she found Quentin in bed with Beth. Enraged, she attacked them and was strangled to death by Quentin. Her gypsy background was hidden, but it became obvious when Magda sought revenge for Jenny... Jenny's short life is featured in Dark Shadows episodes 716-748 (plus some subsequent ghostly hauntings) and in the audio The Doll House

Barnabas Collins' toy soldier
As a child, Barnabas Collins was given a set of toy soldiers for his amusement. They were left neglected in the Old House's playroom by 1795, but Angelique Bouchard found one and, having ascertained that it was Barnabas', she used it as the focus of a spell to punish him for his decision to marry Josette duPres rather than herself. Tying a handkerchief around the neck soldier's and tightening it, Angelique's magic cause Barnabas to choke. So powerful is the spell that Barnabas is on the brink of death, and Angelique cannot face a life without him, She returns to her room and removes the handkerchief with difficulty. She will use this magic again, but not directly against Barnabas. In 1897, Angelique uses the toy soldier - or perhaps another similar doll - to use her choking magic on Aristede, to get him to reveal where the Hand of Petofi is hidden. She tries to use the Hand to lift the werewolf curse from Quentin Collins in return for a promise of marriage, but is unsuccesful. What happened next to this toy soldier is unknown, but in 1967, the ghost of Sarah Collins gives this toy soldier to David Collins to protect him from Barnabas, now a vampire. David does not know of Barnabas' condition, but is suspicious of him and resents being excluded from his old playground, the Old House. Despite hearing Sarah's voice warning him to stay out of the Old House cellar, David steals the spare keys to the Old House and heads there late one day, taking the toy soldier with him. He goes to the cellar and finds an open coffin. Barnabas has only recently risen from the coffin, andhe returns to the cellar to find David. David is saved by the arrival of Dr Julia Hoffman, and a tense confrontation where David claims Barnabas was going to kill him ensues, before David returns home to Collinwood. Did the toy soldier save David? David gives the toy soldier to his cousin, Carolyn Stoddard, for her protection, and it swaps back and forth between them a few times. It is in Carolyn's possession when she finally decides to go to the Old House to see if David's story of a coffin in the cellar is true. She unwisely leaves the to soldier on the foyer table in Collinswood, goes to the Old House and fiunds the truth of what David said as Barnabas rises from the coffin and feeds on her blood. The toy soldier is not seen again in Collinswood...

Rachel Drummond's Garnet Brooch. Rachel Drummond, recently hired as governess at Collinwood by Edward Collins in 1897 (705), is horrified to discover that the latest arrivals at Collinwood are the Trasks. Rachel was orphaned and tendered into the care of the Trasks, who subjected Rachel and other students of their school at Worthington Hall to abuse and exploitation (727). Rachel, along with her friend Tim Shaw, had fled Worthington Hall taking the salary she had earned working for the Trasks, but the elder Trasks insist on accusing her of stealing the money - and Tim of murdering Minerva's brother Simon Briar - and trying to blackmail Rachel and Tim (who was briefly Charity Trask's fiance) into service (733). Rachel is keenly aware of the likelihood that the authorities will take the Trasks' word over hers or Tim's, which leaves Rachel and Tim with little recourse. Gregory Trask arrives at Collinwood (725) concerning Edward's consideration of the idea of sending the children away from Collinwood. He ends up intervening in Quentin's possession of Jamison and makes use of the incident to promote the idea of Jamison and Nora going to his school (726). Unfortunately for Rachel, she opens the door at Collinwood when Charity Trask arrives (727). Minerva's arrival at Collinwood follows - Rachel answers the door for Minerva, who immediately announces her intentions that Rachel should return to the school (733). Desperate to flee Collinwood before the Trasks succeed in taking her back, Rachel reluctantly submits her sole possession of value, a garnet brooch that once belonged to her mother, to Magda's appraisal. Rachel comes to hope that Magda will help her to sell the brooch in order to get travel fare away from Collinsport - perhaps to Boston, which is mentioned several times (733-734). Tim Shaw comes to the Old House looking for Rachel and recognizes the garnet brooch on the table. He presses Magda for Rachel's whereabouts and promises to give Rachel fifty dollars himself to use to get away. Unfortunately for Rachel, Tim has already been pressed back into aiding Trask, and is followed by Trask to Rachel's hiding place in a secret room in the Collins mausoleum (734-735). Rachel winds up along with Tim, back in the service of the Trasks at the school, which is set up on Collins property with Judith Collins' blessing, after Worthington Hall burns down immediately following Trask's refusal to let Laura leave there with her children Jamison and Nora. (735). (The garnet brooch appears back in Rachel's possession later in the story). Rachel Drummond appears in the star-studded Big Finish Dark Shadows anniversary audio, The Crimson Pearl.Image sources: 733, 734, 734.

A cardboard silhouetteAs a witch of great experience, Angelique Bouchard knows many spells and curses. One, a traditional pirate curse, is known as the shadow curse. Angelique placed the shadow curse on Jeb Hawkes. Angelique blamed Jeb for the failure of her marriage to Sky Rumford, and placed a cardboard silhouette over Jeb's heart after the two had argued. This act marked Jeb as the target for a supernatural shadow, that would stalk, engulf and kill him. The shadow, must approach in a lit area (no light, no shadows), and Jeb became confined to dark rooms for a while to avoid death. Jeb eventually convinced Barnabas to get Angelique to talk to him. Angelique hears how her falling out with Sky prevented Nicholas Blair from killing her, but said that she could not lift the cure - once summoned, the shadow continues to hunt the marked victim until they are killed. But the curse can be transferred so that a new victim is marked, and the two agree that their mutual enemy, Nicholas Blair, be the target. Jeb visits Nicholas, pretending to seek Nicholas' assistance in lifting the curse. He tells Nicholas of the transfer and offers to put the curse on someone of Nicholas' choice as a peace offering to end the conflict between them. Nicholas is delighted but suspicious, and threatens to kill Jeb's wife, Carolyn, if he doesn't do exactly what they agree. While Nicholas is havin a good old gloat, Jeb thrust the cardboard silhouette over Nicholas' heart, transferring the curse. Jeb ru ns, and the shadow engulf Nicholas, killing him. This curse was also used by Judah Zachary to dispose of Mordecai Grimes back in 1840.

The Ink Note
When Maggie Haskell found herself trapped with a man resembling Burke Devlin in a cabin in a snowy forest by figures identified as members of an organisation known as The Ink, this note was used to communicate their messages. The ink on the paper would inexplicably change, and Maggie used it to give the man resembling Burke a Rorschach Test, triggering one of his missing memories. The note was lost in an avalanche Burke triggered to neutralise the Ink representatives present.
Trying to explain what was happening, Maggie theorised that the substance on the paper was somehow affecting her mind and causing her to hallucinate, but was unable to find further evidence to confirm this or rule it out.

Statuary Bust. When Barnabas and Julia are transported forward in time to the year 1995 instead of being returned to 1970 by the mysterious room in the east wing of Collinwood, they discover Collinwood deserted and in ruins (1060, 1061). Julia goes to a local records office trying to find out more about what has happened. She claims to be writing a book on the Collins family and asks to see records for the Collinses from 1970 onward but is informed the records clerk that the records were burned in a fire several months prior. Julia: Tell me what you know about them, the Collins family. Clerk: I - I don't know anything. Julia: The house, why it is deserted? Clerk: Don't ask me. Julia: Who can I ask? Clerk: Listen, just forget about the house. There's no point in talking about it, Victor found that out and Jeanne, poor Jeanne. Julia: Jeanne? Clerk: The Flaglers. Oh, look, don't go bothering Victor he won't talk about it and he shouldn't be asked to.Leaving the records office, Julia encounters Professor Stokes, who attempts to warn them away. Stokes: For your sake and Barnabas Collins' go away from the village now. Julia: Not until we find out what happened. Stokes: Go away or we will be forced to act. After apprising Barnabas about the results of her inquiry, Barnabas and Julia leave the mausoleum, unaware that the reticent Professor Stokes and the records clerk observe them leaving. Clerk: They're going to Victors'. Stokes: Very likely. Clerk: Are you going to stop them? Stokes: Perhaps he can do what I couldn't. Perhaps he can stop them from ever going back to Collinwoood again. Perhaps his story will convince them that the forces that are there are best left alone. When Barnabas and Julia arrive at Victor Flaglers' place, he is unwilling to discuss things with them. Victor: I've got nothing to say about that house. Nothing to nobody. Barnabas: Mr. Flagler... Victor: You say you're a Collins? Well, I've got no use for any Collins, so you and her just turn around and start walking. Eventually, however, Julia gets Victor Flagler to tell them more. Victor: Jeanne and I, we went to Collinwood on a dare. People kept saying that they saw things, heard music. I didn't believe 'em. It's just an empty house, I said. Well, it's not empty.Barnabas: Who's there?Victor: I don't know, I didn't see nothing! - but I felt something. I felt something that made my skin crawl, and I yelled at Jeanne, "Let's get out of here" and she felt it too. She was standing below the staircase. She started to run to me, when all of the sudden it fell. Not from the roof, I swear, but from up on that balcony. It fell and hit her. I got to her, bent down, and all of the sudden I heard laughter. I swear I did, laughter... and she was dead. (1062)Photographic portrait of Jeanne Flagler After the sheriff takes them in for questioning, Barnabas and Julia return to Collinwood. Julia is waiting in the foyer for Barnabas for a moment, when a statuary bust on the balcony railing which was not there previously, topples as if by itself and nearly hits Julia, who is probably saved only by Barnabas' warning (1063). Barbabas: Julia! Watch out! Julia: Oh... That woman, that woman Jeanne, it happened to her! Barnabas! Barnabas! (Barnabas and Julia exit Collinwood) Julia: He meant to kill me. He meant to kill me. Why, Barnabas? Who? (1063)As if in reply, Barnabas and Julia suddenly find themselves looking upon the face of the ghost that haunts the ruins of Collinwood. Later, when the imminent destruction of Collinwood in 1970 is at hand, Elizabeth Stoddard does a curious thing - she deliberately places the statuary bust on the balcony railing in the same location (1080) as if setting the trap on Gerard Stiles' behalf that will later be sprung by Jeanne Flagler, then presumably reset by Gerard just before it nearly falls on Julia in 1995. The prevention of the events in 1840 that will lead to the destruction of Collinwood in 1995 should also prevent the Flaglers being dared to enter the ruins of the haunted Collins mansion, leaving the Flaglers free to meet with a different fate than they had originally. Jeanne Flagler appears in the remarkable Big Finish Dark Shadows audio, Tainted Love, where she is portrayed by the lovely and talented Alexandra Donnachie, who also plays Jackie Tate in the audio dramas Bloodlust and In The Twinkling of an Eye, and Holly Arbour in the audio drama, Panic.

A one-way railway ticket to Collinsport
A train on a Maine night, heading to the end-of-the-line. A young woman lost in thought.
My name is Victoria Winters. My journey is beginning, a journey that I hope will open the doors of life to me and link my past with my future, a journey that will bring me to a strange and dark place, to the edge of the sea, high atop Widows' Hill, a house called Collinwood, a world I've never known, with people I've never met, people who tonight are still only shadows in my mind, but who will soon fill the days and nights of my tomorrows.
In her hand she holds her ticket, one-way. She has nowhere to go back to. Soon she'll arrive at the station, disembark, and step into history...

(Regulated and Prohibited Items). This e-mail from The British Museum may help to clarify several omissions that may have occurred. ;-) "Dear Sir, The British Museum wishes to thank you for your interest in our scheduled exhibit, "Collinsport in 100 Objects," and for checking with us in advance regarding intended entries to the exhibit. If we might call your attention to several criteria concerning exhibits displayed in or by The British Museum as they pertain to some of the items on your list of possible submissions, Regulated: Candles; Caretaker's Lantern - Candles, gas lanterns, oil lamps and other sources of illumination involving combustion may not be fueled or lit as part of an exhibit for reasons of fire safety, even if (or especially if) they are submitted for exhibition by an actual witch. Antique Flintlock Collection (and all other firearms) - ammunition may not be live, and firing pins must be removed from all firearms. (An exception exists if Noah Gifford is in the vicinity; see attached memo concerning justifiable homicide). The Letter Opener That Millicent Tried to Stab Nathan With and Good for Her Because He Totally Had It Coming - Swords, knives, daggers, scimitars, shivs, stakes, John Yaeger's Sword Cane, arrows, letter openers, fangs, stick pins (whether or not accompanying voodoo dolls) including Elizabeth Stoddard's Hatpin Collection 1970 PT, or any other sharp objects appearing in exhibits should be filed, sanded, or otherwise dulled to prevent physical injury to museum staff and patrons. (Additionally, voodoo dolls on exhibit may not have pins stuck in them). Prohibited: Lucky Charms Cereal - We have previously discovered that (as you may have already discovered for yourself while browsing Internet imagery) boxes of this "magically delicious" breakfast cereal appear to be printed with a unique shade of red that is "magically non-photogenic" and pixellates in digital imagery regardless of image resolution. As this can prove frustrating to museum patrons attempting to take photographs of exhibits as souvenirs, and because the product isn't terribly interesting out of the box, Lucky Charms may not appear in exhibits of The British Museum. In the epic audio drama Bloodlust, there's a funny smell in the Tate house and Jackie Tate is out of Lucky Charms. Could these two mysteries be somehow connected? (If we might recommend an artifact which appears in Bloodlust, Rhonda Tate's Tranquilizer Gun is commendable both as an example of the use of non-lethal force by law enforcement, and for delivering sedatives even more expediently than Julia Hoffman's Medical Bag. This would be an acceptable entry provided that the artifact is disarmed in accordance with the aforementioned regulations for both firearms and sharp objects). Perishable Items - i.e., your suggestions of Tom Cunningham's Bacon Breakfast, That Chicken Leg That Willie Taunted Adam With in 1968, and Paul Stoddard's Medicated Milk. Exhibits of The British Museum and items therein are not permitted to consist of meat products, breads, dairy and cheeses, or other perishable food items. Willie BAD! Carousel Music Box - The British Museum is in complete agreement with you that the carousel music box and the apparently transdimensional playroom that it grants supernatural access to, are "about the coolest things ever". However, items which can cause children to mysteriously vanish would be inappropriate for our exhibits for what we hope are fairly obvious reasons. Live Animals - Regarding your nomination of Count Petofi's Unicorn: if it is of any consolation, you are by no means the first person to aspire to find a way to get a unicorn into one of The British Museum's exhibits. Sadly, unicorns (also horses cosmetically altered to look like unicorns) remain prohibited from the museum premises along with any other live animals including both livestock and domestic pets (furthermore, the availability of unicorns has long been an issue with such suggestions). Bat by Bill Blainey, and possibly The Taxidermy of Terror which caused David Collins an inexplicable night of fright in the Todd's Antique Shop (provided David didn't actually see them moving), may be acceptable additions to the History of Collinsport exhibit provided that you are absolutely sure that no live animals are included. Our guidelines recommend striking specimens sharply several times with a stick in order to make certain. Exploding Cat That Used to Be Joshua Collins would of course be prohibited from exhibition as both a live animal and as a live explosive. Why does Lucky the Leprechaun seem to consistently convey an extremely antiquated level of political correctness to some observers? Research suggests that Lucky may have been feeding Lucky Charms to Count Petofi's Unicorn at the time the unthinkable happened and therefore may be unable to update his image because, since the late 1700s, he may only be able to appear on consumer goods posthumously. Note artist's depiction of Lucky (left) with the very same distinctive "OMG, it's a werewolf!" expression that is also seen on the face of Collinsport Inn clerk Mr. Wells (right), mere seconds before Mr. Wells is never heard from again.Of course, perhaps by now you have succeeded in mastering the use of either Count Petofi's Amazing Clairvoyant Cabinet or Magda Rakosi's Crystal Ball and already know all of this, but please do not hesitate to contact us if we may be of further assistance in the selection of the most appropriate items to nominate for our exhibits. We would like to thank you again for your interest in our exhibits and your dedication to their utmost quality and completeness. Sincerely yours, The British Museum"

Many thanks, gregm, for coming up with this idea and for tending the Index on page one. I think this turned out to be a wonderful way to celebrate Halloween, to celebrate Dark Shadows' 50th anniversary, and skimming through episodes treasure hunting for artifacts and quotes must be the next best thing to getting to watch the whole series all over, which circumstances don't presently allow (took a year and a half the first time). I also had tons of fun with this just seeing all the things that other people came up with that I never thought of. Thanks, everyone! Happy 50th Anniversary, Dark Shadows!!

And big thanks from me to all those who played, and also to those who tossed in encouraging and amusing comments. I definitely enjoyed seeing what others came up with!

I almost want to separate this into three topics, and see if we can't come up with 100 objects each from the show (easily), the various novel lines (I'm betting this is doable), and the audios (I'm almost positive). Heck, do a list for the various comics as well.

There are plenty of objects - I had a few I was playing with including, such as - Cheshire Collins' glove (from Dark Shadows #12, Gold Key Comics, 1972)
- The needle of a record player found in a house purchased by Grant and Barbara Douglas (The Haunted Refrain)
- Buzz Hackett's leather jacket (because it rhymes)
- Carolyn Stoddard's little black book (interpretative reading by David Collins)
- A vampire bat (the one called by Angelique as part of her curse on Barnabas)
I suspect there could be a lot of lists of 100 objects...
