Right so now that the current era of UNIT is released and complete, we can finally give it a sure Placement.
Extinction No references to anything in particular. Josh is recruited into Kate’s UNIT team and there’s only one Osgood. BF states in one of the press release articles that this is between The Power of Three and Day of the Doctor.
Shutdown Osgood mentions her trip to the Gobi Desert in Earthfall, setting this after Extinction. Atkins is still around. Osgood does show a mental projection of the Doctor landing the TARDIS in the Tower of London but it’s vague as to whether she’s met him or if it’s just daydreaming.
Silenced Shindi is almost done recovering from the injury he received in Extinction, and mentions that the events of Shutdown occurred in the interim, so release order is champion so far. Also Sam says that Osgoods can’t be duplicated, suggesting this takes place before Day of the Doctor again.
Assembled Osgood hasn’t met the Doctor, so still pre-Day but there’s not much else to go on.
Encounters Jacqui McGee is now an ally of UNIT and helps them get fake passports, suggesting this is set after Silenced. UNIT first find out about the Auctioneers.
Cyber-Reality Set a few months after Encounters with UNIT still tracking the Auctioneers.
Revisitations Host of the Wirrn picks up almost immediately after Cyber-Reality with the Master leaving a Wirrn egg behind for UNIT to find.
Lady Christina: Series 1 Sam Bishop is leading the cleanup operation after the fall of the Auctioneers, so this is after Cyber-Reality and probably after Host of the Wirrn at least as well.
Incursions The UNIT team mention their encounters with Daleks, Cybermen and Sontarans, setting this after Encounters and Cyber-Reality. UNIT don’t know much about River Song and Kate meets her for the first time, setting this before Day of the Doctor where UNIT know who River is and have a photo of River and Kate together. In the news article to go with this release, it’s mentioned that further series will move into the Twelfth Doctor era with Two Osgoods, suggesting that these stories are all set in the Eleventh Doctor era and while only one Osgood exists.
Day of the Doctor Osgood meets the Doctor and ends up with a Zygon double. According to the novelisation, Atkins is killed by Zygon Kate. UNIT have already encountered River Song.

Huh. Well, that’s kind of annoying, but it is what it is!

It’s after The Zygon Invasion/Inversion as UNIT have already lost one Osgood before.

I wasn’t saying it was a full timeline though I was saying that the boxsets can pretty much be placed definitively now.

The point I was trying to make that has somehow got complicated is the Timeline of the current BF series has been summed up (as occurring pre Day of the Doctor) and omitting Narcissus are we therefore considering that EP the start of the net run of the BF series (possibly set post Day of the Doctor) then?

Narcissus has two Osgoods, so it has to be after they get another Zygon Osgood in Series 9.

Regards mark687 I don’t look at the War Master’s appearances in other ranges as part of the War Master series as such, so I probably view Narcissus similarly. Obviously it’s a UNIT story and it has its place within the timeline of the UNIT Series but unless the Capaldi Era UNIT sets link to it directly I’d say it’s something that can stand on its own.

The Sacrifice of Jo Grant for modern UNIT takes place sometime after Assembled, as Osgood and Jo are quite close friends now. Osgood seems very excited about encountering the Third Doctor, but not sure if that means she’s never met the Doctor at all before or is just particularly excited about that particular incarnation.
The Third Doctor is also accompanied by his time’s UNIT, which is sometime early Season 8.

Quick question for chroniclers, can anyone tell me the definitive date for when the UN in UNIT's name was altered from "United Nations" to "Unified"?

Quick question for chroniclers, can anyone tell me the definitive date for when the UN in UNIT's name was altered from "United Nations" to "Unified"? In the September 2005 issue of DWM, RTD claimed that the real UN no longer wished to be associated with the fictional organization and that the BBC was told they were not allowed to use the United Nations name for UNIT anymore. But they could continue to use the acronym as long as they didn’t say what it stood for. Later, in 2008’s The Sontaram Stratagem, it was said aloud in dialogue that UNIT was short for UNified Intelligence Taskforce and that was that.

I've been wondering why they changed the name ever since they first said 'Unified'

I know they're still funded by the United Nations at that point, but is there ever an in-universe reason for why it's changed?

The BBC should have replied, graciously allowing the UN to continue being associated with U.N.I.T.
One organisation saved the world from disaster every 4 to 6 weeks through the early 1970s (or was it the 80s??) and regularly ever since... The other talked about doing something, sometime, probably, if we're all in agreement obviously which we aren't so let's just leave that then...

UNIT: Nemesis appears to be set between Death in Heaven and The Zygon Invasion.
At least Kate recalls meeting Missy in the first episode, and only time they’ve met is in the Series 8 finale.
And then in episode 4, they talk about the events of The Day of the Doctor quite a bit.
But there’s only one Osgood and no indication that there’s two or even that they’ve recently lost one, which is odd.
But I think a setting between DiH and The Zygon Invasion is a safe bet.

Doesn’t Kate claim in The Zygon Invasion that after Death in Heaven the surviving Osgood went mad with grief and disappeared though? Hence why she’s not present in The Magician’s Apprentice.

Yes that’s said, but it’s said by Jac rather than Kate. I guess we’ll just have to assume that someone who might not have even been around when Osgood was had just been paraphrasing what actually happened. Like they discuss DOTD and the Zygons in one episode and a second Osgood isn’t even brought up, to the extent that Josh Carter doesn’t seem to know much about the Zygons. So it doesn’t feel like it can fall after the Zygon two parter but there’s a reference to Death in Heaven.
