And there was me, thinking I might have actually coined the word "speciesist" in my earlier post... ... until I listened to 'Tidal Wave'. My claim to a spot in the OED gone again...

Having listened to the first episode, I'm happy to say that I enjoyed that a lot. A really nice build up for what preomises to be a somewhat epic confrontation. I do agree with kimalysong that the shift into the heat of action was rather abrupt - one moment, we were enjoying a bit of nostalgia and Benton complaining about his knees, the next we were in the heart of battle. The Silurian voices - well, as is made clear from the cover, we are hearing the new series versions, which means more human-sounding (in fact totally human-sounding) Silurians. It seems the modulated warblings from the past are consigned to history, which is a shame. Mind you, I have only heard disc 1. Perhaps the 'ssssss' sounds are there as a kind of compromise, to make it clear which characters are which. I do remember a couple of occasions where the reptilian aggressors in Warriors of the Deep emitted the odd 'sssss' - true, they were Sea Devils, but they and the Silurians are all cousins under the scaly skin.

Since this boxset uses the Silurians. Is there any reference to UNIT: The Coup which had the Brig and Classic Silurians?

Call To ArmsDid @mattfitton write a 'werewolf movie' without the actual werewolves? This excellent action story from one of my favourite BF writers certainly felt like it at times: a remote location in the Lake District, a group of friends holed up in a lonely building, trapped in the night and foul weather with a howling enemy hunting them in the dark... We revisit 'The Silurians' in a way, as UNIT again encounter and battle the sentient reptiles in a remote cave system, but with a twist: there's no moral dilemma this time, the local Silurian leader is an out-and-out villain who hates apes on principle and is ready to kill his own people as a strategic diversion - and for being the 'wrong sort' of Silurians, farmers and scientists. A traditional 'Doctor Who' to welcome back the UNIT old guard: Jastrok is a monster out to rule the world and it's up to UNIT to stop him! I enjoyed the traditional action story very much, and for this Third Doctor fan the many classic story references and character moments were just as exciting. Great to hear Richard Franklin back again - and John Levene too, finally! I hope they both do many more stories for BF - can we please have them back as their youthful selves in the 3DAs for a classic UNIT story, please?! It was fun to have a guest appearance here if not for the Doctor, then at least for his beloved roadster 'Bessie' - she even sounded yellow on audio... parp! parp! As you can tell, I loved it. Over forty years since I grew up with the UNIT era, this was friends reUNITed indeed, and it's just the start of the adventure... (Oh and isn't Osgood terrific?!)

Finished this off just a few minutes ago--what a delight. I loved how wonderfully it married together Pertwee-era and modern UNIT, enough nostalgia to service fans of the old run but with the old crew adapting very well to the new crew's way of doing things, respectful in both directions. And while that was obviously going to be the core of the story, I thought they did a nice job of balancing it against the villainous Silurian antagonist storyline. Silurian stories are a bit of a trap--they always seem to run 'ancient Silurians wake up, want to reclaim their world, are defeated, the end'--but I thought they did a nice job of keeping it fresh here. The 'side quests' of parts 2 and 3 felt relevant and unique enough to keep the overall plot from running out of gas. Jo, Benton, and Yates were wonderful here, and meshed great with the new team. I don't want this to be the end of their UNIT story, but if it is, it's a great exit for them. And hey, they name-dropped Klein in part 4!

Probably not I remember hearing it in a sociology course when I was in uni (I graduated 10 years ago this year), and I'm sure it wasn't new then either!

Not that I caught, I thought it was a very self-contained box set. Colonel Shindi and Felicity Lyme/Lyme Industries didn't appear but were both mentioned, but both mentions were in context of this story (and I'd guess their absence was just down to the huge cast already in this release). Caveat: I haven't had time to listen to the bonus features yet, so I can't speak to what may or may not be said there (yet).

If I'm going to miss out, a wide miss is easier than a near miss! (Mind-boggled slightly at the thought of 'speciesist' being used for real in a sociology course. Just how many sentient species did they expect their graduates to come across?? )

The context was in terms of vegans/animal rights, something to do with the human animal's domination over other animal species. I can't remember the exact details, as I was a bit preoccupied finding out how hard I could roll my eyes

Tidal Wave is great fun. It goes without saying - in fact, it's gone without saying for over forty years - but Katy Manning's great isn't she? Jo Jones' joy at being in the submarine is laugh-out-loudly infectious. I'm glad to hear the Sea Devils haven't been humanised in their sound, and Jo's admiration of them is strangely moving and in-character. As mentioned earlier in this thread, her attempts at negotiation with the creatures is very Doctor-like. How I look forward to Jo meeting Yates and Benton next.

Had time to listen to the bonus features this afternoon. Supremely vague, but what they (I think it was David Richardson) had to say was: - they are (were) writing box set 5 as they were finishing up recording Assembled - it will be "a very different type of storytelling" - it will involve another enemy from the Doctor's past - there will be "another aspect that touches on something from another story from the past" I hope that meant something to you, because it was just about meaningless to me

I finished this earlier this evening and really enjoyed it. Yes, I agree, some Silurians sounded a little too much like Ice Warriors, but that didn't take away from my enjoyment of the set. It was a lot fun and every character had a chance to shine. It was my favorite Kate Stewart story, as well. She didn't sound so monotone in this one. I think Jemma Redgrave is finally feeling comfortable with the medium, recording process or whatever it was that kept her as stiff as she was in the other UNIT sets. (I had the pleasure of meeting her last year at LI WHO and she was one of the loveliest women, but seemed a little shy.)
I always find it interesting that for me, The Third Doctor era is one of my least favorites. But then I think about how many amazing stories there are, and how many characters I adore from that era and tend to forget why that is.
