Disappointed Clint Eastwood not in this release. God, can you imagine the reaction if BF had somehow scrapped together enough dosh to get Eastwood and they kept it quiet until release! Isn't he playing Abslom Daak in the secret adaptation?

I really enjoyed the first episode but after that I did kind of lose interest. I guess my favorite aspect was Constance little unrequited love story.

Disappointed Clint Eastwood not in this release. Clint Eastwood wasn't in this episode, but his chair was. His chair really gave a brilliant performance.

Never mind Clint East#wood, I kept expecting Servalan to pop up.
I enjoyed this. The interaction between The Doctor and the ever-improving Constance is a highlight, and I also like the slow-burning nature of the story. With this and 'Quicksilver' released on the same day, I am in the very rare position of almost agreeing with those who grumble about there being too much product from Big Finish. Of course, it isn't their fault I listened to this and then immediately started the following story (I have a few days off work and am indulging myself), but it does make each story less consequential. But then against that, I'll have plenty of time to relisten as I often do, and appreciate all over again the tale. So whilst it remains a joy to have so much product to get my teeth into, I wish I had the self-discipline to space it out more!

It did keep me entertained, but the general plot has been done quite a few times - bad aliens manipulate power hungry person into helping them, Doctor offers to help aliens, defeats their plot when they won't see reason.

I'll never join in you in that... If they release a bunch at once, I just space out my listens somewhat. (Besides, I know I'll be listening again at some future point)

I thought it was good, rather than great. Constance is amazing, as always. Six needs that kind of companion. I liked that it was a bit of a breather episode. Nothing of great consequence happens until the denouement, but I think a long running series needs these kind of one-off stories.
I do dearly love Big Finish, but I wish they would stop trying to do American accents.

I do dearly love Big Finish, but I wish they would stop trying to do American accents. Eh, I dunno, speaking as an American, it doesn't really bother me all that much. I can think of one or two people I know personally that have some pretty exaggerated western/southern accents themselves that some people would almost say are fake. I think it really comes down to knowing the actor portraying the role isn't really American rather than the accent itself.

Remember that American accents are inherently fake sounding, speaking as an American. Even last year's all American guest cast in Shield of the Jötunn got some fake accent complaints.

I liked it, I wasn't crazy about the telepathic circuits being used to solve the ticking bomb at first. It's introduction was very clunky and then....the story made me kinda love it. There's this very knowing scene where you can almost imagine Colin and Miranda looking at the camera while acknowledging how coincidental it was that they've been saved by something they just happened to dig up so recently. Jamie Anderson is certainly his father's son when it comes to tongue in cheek adventures.
Arian Nik as Ammar gives a wonderfully warm guest performance. I was thinking Ammar was companion material and thus was delighted when he was extended the invite towards the end. I liked his arc with Constance.ctually having one of the characters call a blooming love affair that they can't embark on and have to nip in the bud because one of them is married a "brief encounter" is rather on the nose for anyone familiar with the David Lean classic.
I'm also loving this trend to end somewhat tense scenes with Sixie asking if there are any custard creams going spare. Having marathoned his stories this was a recurring beat this year, and always with a custard cream. A lovely wee character quirk.
I like to give a shoutout to the music when I enjoy it and did so here. On checking who did it to name check them I was quite stunned to see that it was by Joe Kraemer - this is the man who composed the score for blockbusters like Jack Reacher and the last Mission Impossible film Rogue Nation. When I checked, I saw he also composed the score for The Defectors so I'll need to revisit that as I clearly didn't realise it's pedigree at the time.
I'm hoping Constance does defrost a bit towards The Doctor in the next one. She clearly does have warmth for him but being so impossibly stiff uper lip means she's often coming across as snooty and aloof towards him when I just want her to be herself like she was able to be like Ammar. Maybe that sounds like a complaint but I actually like having this super capable woman who doesn't want to open up to anyone. She's very much a perfect foil for Sixie but in a totally different way from Evelyn. I think this is her default mode while her husband is missing. She's closed ranks.

I just finished listening to this tonight. I actually loved the telepathic circuits thing. And also loved Constance Clark getting to show her cleverness. Overall enjoyable story.

Took the opportunity to enjoy the spring sunshine and decided to give this (and a few other BF Titles) a quick re-listen. If I'm honest, on first listen, I didn't make much of this - it wasn't an overly negative or positive reaction (more meh) than anything else. A solid Sixie release and, as ever, anything with Colin Baker in it is well worth a listen. However, I recall finding the previous release - Order of the Daleks - and the subsequent release - Quicksilver - more interesting, so this one got overlooked a bit (especially with the Christmas release date - was listening, but not really listening at the time).
On reflection, I think this is a bit of an underrated gem. True, it isn't one of the absolute finest BF releases and I can't see it being a classic, but it isn't bad. It is an interesting premise - even if the concept has been run hundreds of times before. The characterisation in this one is pretty strong and is better than that of the plot itself - the characters are not as 2D as they were in Order of the Daleks. Whilst Lyam Iyce comes across as a bit of the stereotypical 'panto' villain, the other cast are pretty well served and the subplot between Constance and Ammar is well developed. Even though Baker is good in this, the Doctor is more secondary to the plot and this one gives Constance the chance to really shine. I particularly like the fact that she is able to make her *own* decisions - whilst the Doctor gives her hints about what to do, Constance doesn't follow instructions willy nilly.
The ending of this one is pretty powerful - Constance is reminded of her own past and the need to sort it out. Her decision to 'leave' the Doctor and return to 'her' War is quite emotive. There was also very much a New Series feel to this - Constance making it clear that whilst travelling with the Doctor is eye-opening and fun, it has its own emotional baggage and that, wherever they go, people always get hurt. Does reflect Davros' comment in The Stolen Earth about the Doctor fashioning people into weapons. This scene is also a bit more believable that Tegan's goodbye in Resurrection of the Daleks...
Not a perfect release, but better than I remembered. Wasn't a bad way to spend a sunny afternoon!!
