I am gagging to hear The Invisible Man, but I'm fully behind BF's decision here. Yep, perfectly understandable. Looking forward to listening to this, but it will be tinged with sadness. Yes of course!! Tinged with sadness, I have yet to listen to "War Doctor 3" but when I do,(along with The Invisible Man+Wd4
I will look upon it as a celebration of Sir John Hurt and what a wonderful person and great Actor he was"!!

Wow, this is brilliant.....I have stopped it 40 mins into, I have a hospital trip next week, for my mum not me so lots of hanging about, saving it for then.
I don't recall ever reading this, (in fact apart from war of the worlds I don't think I have read any of well's work) as the story is unfamiliar, seen the movies over the years but like war of the worlds, the updated time period just don't have the same bite.
It's gut wrenching to think of this as mr hurts swan song, but what a swan song.
Only thing I didn't like was the tagged on podcast, could they just have include the tribute, the rest seems a bit crass to be included
As a side note John hurt's award winning performance in Jeffrey Barnard is unwell is on radio 4 at weekend, as is another HG Well's story Ann Veronica.... Also while it's still about, B7 prod of I robot is worth catching on I player radio

I have never finished an audio and given in a standing ovation. That's how good it was. Hurt made this come alive in a way no one else has and to think that this is his final performance was amazing. RIP John Hurt, you made it worth every minute.

Very enjoyable, and a great adaptation. There's not much else to say that hasn't been said already. John Hurt was brilliant, and this is a story that will get many repeat listens from me.

Would I find this adaption of The Invisible Man so blisteringly brilliant if I were not so moved by the fact it features one of Sir John's last performances? Yep, I'm pretty sure I would. True, the touching and tragic reminder I'm listening to a master actor no longer with us adds an extra dimension to this - but really, the whole thing shines. Everything about this is wonderful. I love the sound design, the music, the way the story has been adapted for audio, the actors: all of it. Heartfelt congrats to all involved from my humble self.

Utterly magnificent. If you haven't subscribed to this BF H.G.Wells range yet, I'd do it now. If the other five releases are half as good as this they will be great. The adaptation is superb; mostly performing the action in 'real time' as it unfolds but also weaving the 'storytelling' element of the novel into the drama, where one character describes to another the strange events that befell them.
The BF 'house style' is all over this production - and of course that's a high compliment. Yes, it's a literary 'classic' but in pacing, sound design and sheer impact this is Wells for the 'Doctor Who' generation and why not? It was sometimes hard to escape the impression I was hearing a first-class pseudo-historical full of Holmesian Gothic elements - then flipping it back the right way up and remembering how fundemental Wells is to all the science fiction that has followed.
All the performances are excellent and that's of course by comparison with the highest standard: Griffin (the Invisible Man) is a monster of evil ambition, no doubt about it, but Sir John Hurt makes him so believable; contemptously 'superior' and revelling in his new power, then angry, vindictive, murderous, desperate and finally pitiable. Superb.
'The Invisible Man' is a fabulous drama in its own right and now also a most memorable tribute. It deserves to be listened to with all the attention you can give it... listen alone at night and you may well imagine fearfully strong, invisible fingers reaching for you...

Agree totally, I'd (successfully) resisted the preview episode but heard great things from those who did listen. Even better than I expected, an outstanding release, this should be a great year for the classics.

Oh, this is good! This is REALLY REALLY good! I'll wait until the rest of February's releases are out to say this is the absolute best of February, but it's definitely the best so far (and that's no slight to the other stories this month)!

I can only agree with everything everyone has said here. I was riveted during the entire audio, but listening to Hurt as Griffin describe his experiments and his transformation into the monstrous was something else altogether. It was a master class in acting. And not just acting for audio. Well done, Big Finish. Forget all the John Hurt retrospectives, this was the best tribute there could have been for him. A reminder of the talent that we lost.
