Top Gear is the exception. It's a very blokey show, so if you add a woman it doesn't work. Same if Loose Women added a male presenter. That's because Loose Women targets a specific audience and demographic, plus the fact the word 'Women' is featured in that programme's title. Whereas Top Gear is not gender specific and never has been. Just under half of the TG viewing audience are female because guess what.... women like cars too. I'd say Clarkson, Hammond and May Top Gear was very gender specific. There's a reason why they didn't have a female presenter.

The fact that since they left the BBC have not appoinnted a woman as one of their replacements is disgraceful. Claiming that the monsters in Doctor Who should represent human diversity but that a programme like Top Gear doesnt have to is just sexist nonsense.

My friend would definitely disagree ... and she is a car mechanic! Cheers Tony

In fact if you look at Le Banc, you could say they are trying not to just target men. Anyway, I can see we won't agree on this at all so I will leave it there. Cheers Tony

I moved the 7 above posts from their original thread as they were off-topic and belong here.

No it's not, because Top Gear is aimed specifically at men just like Loose Women is aimed at women. It's not aimed specifically at men at all. It's a car show, that's it entire premise. My sister found the antics of the three of them just as entertaining as I did.

My sister found the antics of the three of them just as entertaining as I did. A car show about three men larking about in cars - and when they did bring a woman in, it was only to sit in a car during one car review VT whilst Jeremy Clarkson drove and made stereotypical jokes - in the same way Loose Women make stereotypical jokes about us men. Again: I know women watch it but that doesn't mean the show is aimed at them. Plenty of adults watch My Little Pony but that's a show made for little kids.

And if it were aimed at men, then how come Suzi Perry isnt one of the presenters? I'd happily watch her all night.

Top Gear's entire premise is that it's a a car show. Not a car show for men, just a car show. If you like cars, you like the show is the idea. If you don't care about cars, well here's some middle aged men larking about in entertaining situations. Why ascribe a gender to it when it plainly doesn't need one? And as for their stereotypical jokes-they made them about everyone! Them being stereotypical about the Scottish (to choose a random example) doesn't make it an English show

Yes, the show has a blokey atmosphere, but there are plenty of women who can do and do do blokey, and the blokey presentation does not mean that the show only or even mostly appeals to men.

Women and 'blokey' is a contradiction. Yeah, you do have women who call themselves 'tomboys' but to me that would be the same as a man presenting Loose Women because he's feminine.

As you say "for you", you need to recognise that what is "for you" is not the same as "for everyone" or even "for most" and maybe even be close to "not at all".
