I'm currently on a Benny binge, starting with "Oh no it isn't!" and heading all the way to the latest New Adventures of Bernice Summerfield box, with the sidesteps, short trip and CC thrown in, along with a book or three.
BUT is it just me or is "Summer of Love" one of the most execrable bits of nonsense ever produced by BF? I mean, it's not bad on the level of "The Boy that Time Forgot", or IMO the "I really wish I hadn't bought it" of "The Wizard of Oz", but I do feel it is just a waste of time.

It was definitely on a different wavelength than other Benny offerings.

While I'm a fellow "hater" of the BF-Wizard of Oz, I don't feel the same as you about this one. I liked it. Yeah, it's a bit loose, but I guess I was in tune with the sense of humor they were putting behind all the lust.

Maybe that's my failing then, I didn't find it at all funny...and I HAVE been known to laugh at a "Carry on" film. (Mainly "...Screaming")

I vaguely remember it as being a bit silly. But I didn't dislike it. It's been a while since I listened to it.

When this came up on the Randomoid Selectotron in the podcast one time, Nick just stopped reading the synopsis when he reached s******g (it used to say shagging).

Well, the Benny series inherited a small bit of the nonsense of the novels (and so did Torchwood in its own way) that more "adult" stories meant more sex and swearing, rather than deeper stories. Which is actually quite a childish way of looking at it rather than adult.

I've been working my way through the audios as well, and I thought "Summer of Love" was pretty awful, but at least slightly better than the one that immediately preceded it, "The Worst Thing in the World." (Yipe! We wrote ourselves into a corner. How should we end it? With a musical number!) Back to back, these two just make me cringe.
Hope there's a quick improvement in quality coming up. I just got a shipment and now have all the episodes up to "The Adolescence of Time."
(Also didn't care for "The Masquerade of Death," which fell into the same silliness trap, without the silliness.)

I'm not quite binging on them, but I've been listening to a few Bennys over the last few days. I've said it in other threads, but I find the Benny range so completely inconsistent. And the fact that so many of the important moments of Benny's life happen in novels that are difficult to get make me so frustrated. There are many gems, but then we get some terrible stories like the above The Masquerade of Death and some others. I find that I can't listen to too many at once because of all of these reasons. I found Summer Of Love more of an unnecessary, and uncomfortable interlude in the story telling of the season. It felt like they did it on a dare, which is not the most positive of things to think about a story.

I wasn't bothered so much that information was only in the novels. I found out a lot about Benny by reading wikis online to fill in the gaps.
Though now I think I do have all the books. Haven't read them all yet, though.

I love Benny but like some say above it can be a horribly inconsistent range veering from the great to the god awful. For me the only set which was all killer was the 2 Story So Far sets. I often find the books have had a better quality control.

Funny, I liked both "Summer of Love" and "The Boy that Time Forgot"! I also found Summer Of Love funny rather than being distasteful. I do wonder what it was like in the BF recording booths when it was getting recorded with all those er.. "noises". It would have been funny to see. Though in hindsight some of the actors might cringe now.
