Doctor Who - Special Releases --> The Third Doctor Adventures Volume ThreeReleased August 2017SynopsisThe Conquest of Far, by Nicholas BriggsEarth Alliance, the future… Fleet commanders receive their orders from the President of Earth. Operation Far is ‘go’. As soon as the planets are suitably aligned, the attack will go ahead. The Doctor and Jo arrive on the planet Far. The Doctor wants to attend the grand opening of one of the human race’s greatest achievements. A huge Hyper Gateway built to make travel around Earth’s great empire more convenient, bringing relief to many starving outer colonies. But they land in the wrong time period, long after the Gateway has been in service, and the Daleks have conquered Far! It’s the middle of a war and a deadly game is underway. When everyone has an agenda, betrayal can happen at any time, from any side. The endgame is approaching and maybe this time no one will survive. Storm of the Horofax, by Andrew SmithDuring a North Sea military exercise, the crew of the destroyer HMS Nemesis detect what they suspect is a submarine following them. But it’s actually a futuristic ship with an alien occupant, Arianda. The Doctor and UNIT are called in, but things are already running out of control. The damaged craft is leaking particles and contaminating the Nemesis with time disruption. But that’s not the biggest problem. For Arianda is being followed by the warships of the Horofax, who have picked precisely this moment to invade. Soon the destruction of humanity’s future will begin. Written By: Nicholas Briggs, Andrew Smith Directed By: Nicholas Briggs CASTim Treloar (The Doctor), Katy Manning (Jo Grant), George Watkins (Delralis), John Banks (Jickster), Amy Newton (Elaquon), Robin Weaver (Arianda), Iain Batchelor (Adam Rigg), Robert Hands (Major Hardy / Crewman), Richard Derrington (Commander Burton), Ian Cunningham (Sinko / Ronson / Lieutenant), Jake Dudman (UNIT Radio Operator) and Nicholas Briggs (The Daleks) Trailer is now up!

Loved the first two sets and I'm so glad Nick is finally writing a 3DA. All we need now is a cyberman story....

Looking forward to this set so much, the Nicholas Briggs Dalek story especially. I hope and expect it will be heaving with authenticity and Third Doctor-isms! Also extremely pleased that they have finally done the proper thing and shown Jon Pertwee on the cover, if only in the sidebar. They always give William Hartnell and Patrick Troughton the honour of being visible in the EA and CC artwork, so why not extend the same courtesy to 'my' Doctor? Next time, show him properly in the full cover artwork too, please - it's OK BF, I do know it's not really him! (Although there are almost moments in Tim Treloar's great performance when I'm not entirely sure about that... )

I'd like to think that when Nick Briggs writes a 'Third' Doctor Cyberman story it is not anything like The Blue Tooth! As the only thing I liked about that was the music.

Yes, it's good to have Jon Pertwee's face on the cover, as he is of course visibly recogniseable as The Third Doctor. I think the blanked out face on the central picture 'kind of' lets you know it isn't actually Mr Pertwee we are listening to. Fans will know of Mr Treloar, but others not quite so much so, perhaps.
Either way, I'm really looking forward to this. I'm happy to admit I've been 100% convinced of the merits of recasting (after remaining sceptical so long) having heard Tim Treloar - he is tremendous, and his stories have been very authentic to the Third Doctor's era. As a personal thing, I'd shy away from having the Third Doctor facing Cybermen, Tereleptils, the Taran Woodbeast 'just because' (I'm using extravagant examples of course!); that would indicate 'ticking boxes' to me. While it would be good to have returning monsters and villains in the future (and I hope the 3DAs have a long future), the Third Doctor's era wasn't known hugely for nostalgia, and I hope the audios respect that. Just my opinion, mind!

I think the blanked out face on the central picture 'kind of' lets you know it isn't actually Mr Pertwee we are listening to. Fans will know of Mr Treloar, but others not quite so much so, perhaps. My view was always that when Frazer Hines was playing the 2nd Doctor, or William Russell/Peter Purves the 1st Doctor in the Early Adventures range the same criteria wasn't applied. Everyone knows Jon Pertwee is no longer with us, like Patrick Troughton and William Hartnell, so it's obviously not him in the Third Doctor audios. So for me there was no need to shadow Jon Pertwee's face if you wasn't doing it with the other two Doctors. Tim Trelaor imitating Jon Pertwee on audio is no different to Frazer Hines imitating Patrick Troughton as far as I am concerned. As to whether these stories are any good is a different matter; I will try this 3DA set out as it includes a Dalek story written by Nick, which are usually very good, so hopefully it is an enjoyable experience.

I would think everyone who is likely to buy such a niche product as the 3DAs knows that Jon Pertwee is sadly no longer with us. I agree the 3DAs should be innovative with their monsters within the styles of the time - so many monsters we now take for granted as 'classic' monsters were created for this era. Silurians, Sontarans and Nestenes most obviously, plus Axons, Daemons, Ogrons, Draconians (OK aliens, not 'monsters') were all 'firsts' when Jon Pertwee faced them on screen. I agree about the Cybermen, he ran across them in 'The Five Doctors' of course, but that was unusual in many ways. The long gap on screen is part of the Cyber-story and should be left alone I think. Now the Daleks are a different matter, for me they belong with the Third Doctor more than any except the First - even if Jon Pertwee famously disliked working with them! I've very much enjoyed the two sets so far, though I was least enthusiastic about 'The Hidden Realm’ in Vol 2. A very good story but to me it didn't 'feel' like a Doctor Who story of that era, more like 'The Avengers' or something. I would guess that with Nicholas Briggs and Andrew Smith we are heading for a very era-authentic Vol 3 (please!), and 'Storm of the Horofax' must be a UNIT story, going by the character list. I'm waiting with great interest! (And some impatience, now it's been put back to August!! )

I totally disagree that the Cybermen should be left alone. The Third Doctor v Cybermen is the one Third Doctor story that really needs to happen. It is ridiculous that it never happened on-screen.

Do you want it or not? Because your first line is rather contradictory to the other two. Unless the Cybermen being left alone actually means not leaving them along and using them.

Really looking forward to this release. The first two volumes were really fun and evoked the TV series of the time. I am one of those that would love to see a story with the Cybermen. They could make it a bit different and have him meet the Cybermen from Revenge or Earthshock. I don't recall the Doctor ever mentioning the upgrades so there is nothing to stop that happening is there?

I'd like to see 3 meet the Cybus Cybermen. 10 seemed familiar with that iteration in Rise of the Cybermen/Age of Steel.

Great cover, looking forward to hearing The Dalek one The Conquest Of Far but come on Big Finish we want a Third Doctor vs Cybermen full cast audio having the Doctor karate chopping the Cybermen.

The Cyberman are perfect for the Third Doctor era IMO. I'm really baffled as to why there was no TV Cyberman serial for 3.

The Third Doctor was the first Doctor I watched and it is shame that Jon Pertwee never got to work with Big Finish. I did buy the first volume, but I wasn't impressed enough to buy the follow ups....perhaps I will in time.
However I would be very interested in a Third Doctor Cybermen full-cast story.
I really cannot fathom why Big Finish have not already done one. I expect it in volume two, but now it looks like it won't happen until volume four if at all.
