William Russell
WILLIAM RUSSELLIt gives us just a ridiculous amount of pleasure to be able to announce that the legendary William Russell has accepted our invitation to join us at Whooverville 9. I feel a bit silly attempting to explain who William is, but for the sake of form… together with our other Whooverville 9 guest Carole Ann Ford, William was one of the original quartet of stars of Doctor Who, playing heroic science teacher Ian Chesterton, a role to which he has returned in recent years for Big Finish Productions.
William’s career in film and television goes back to the 1940s and he has appeared in a number of classic films, including The Man Who Never Was and The Great Escape. On television, he was the star of The Adventures of Sir Lancelot and appeared in any number of shows such as Armchair Theatre, Dr Finlay’s Casebook, Father Brown, Crown Court, Van der Valk, Shoestring, The Professionals, The Black Adder, Robin of Sherwood, Boon, Coronation Street, Casualty, Poirot etc, etc. His most recent TV appearance was in the the Doctor Who 50th Anniversary Docu-Drama, An Adventure in Space and Time.
It will be an enormous pleasure to welcome him to Derby QUAD on 2nd September.
Many thanks to our friend Derek Hambly of Tenth Planet Events, for arranging this on our behalf.
Carole Ann Ford
Carole Ann FordOf course, Carole Ann was one of the original cast of Doctor Who back in 1963, playing the Doctor’s Granddaughter Susan and as such is very much Doctor Who royalty..
After leaving Doctor Who in 1964, Carole Ann went on to other projects in a long and diverse career. Her theatrical work includes many comedies, dramas and musicals, including The Jungle Book, Stranger in the House, Bakerloo to Paradise, The Owl and the Pussycat, The Rumpus, Pride and Prejudice, Inadmissible Evidence, Enrico, Expresso Bongo, Sleeping Beauty, You Never Can Tell, Ned Kelly, Mother, MacBett, The Boy Friend, Have You Seen Manchester, and Private Lives.
Her film appearances include Sarah (about the life of French actress Sarah Bernhardt), The Day of the Triffids (1962) as the blind French girl Bettina, Mix Me a Person (1962), The Great St Trinian’s Train Robbery (1966), and The Hiding Place (1975). In addition to Doctor Who, her television appearances include Suspense (in the episode “Man on a Bicycle”), Whatever Happened to the Likely Lads? (in the episode “Affairs and Relations”), Public Eye,[3] Emergency Ward 10, Attorney General, Moonstrike, Compact, Probation Officer, and Dial M for Murder.
Carole Ann mostly stopped acting in 1977 and has since taught voice and presentation skills and dialogue coaching to politicians, businesspeople, after-dinner speakers and actors. However, she reprised the character of Susan for both the series’ 20th anniversary TV special, The Five Doctors (1983), and 30th anniversary charity special, Dimensions in Time (1993). In recent years, she has again taken on the role of Susan for Big Finish in Companion Chronicles, Lost Stories, Early Adventures and in full cast adventures opposite the Eighth Doctor, played by Paul McGann.
For the show’s 50th Anniversary in 2013, Carole Ann played the cameo role of Joyce in An Adventure in Space and Time, and appeared in the anniversary comedy homage The Five(ish) Doctors Reboot.
We feel deeply honoured that Carole Ann has accepted our invitation and look forward very much to meeting her.
