I was sold when they said Sue Vertue. I think she could be the big reason Moffat and Gatiss did so much better on Sherlock than on Doctor Who.

What's the bet Drac will be played by Hayley Attwell
Regards
mark687 Why can I actually picture this working? I'm very interested to see what Moffatt and Gatiss make here. I've loved almost everything Moffat's done and I can't wait to see what he does with Dracula. Modern day? Almost direct adaptation of the book? Completely insane idea that nobody else would ever come up with? I'll watch it no matter what.

Oh, I'm going to love this. Very intrested to see how they'll update it, though given the racism of the original novel.

I never get tired of this story and I'll definitely be looking forward to seeing what they come up with.

I admit I am not into vampires. At all. BUT I have been looking forward to this since it was first mentioned.

To be fair to Moffat and Gattis, since Lugosi screen Draculas have indeed concentrated on the sexuality, the dark romance. Yeah, it's not there in Stoker's novel - which I've read more than a few times - but it's a valid take based on the pop culture Dracula if not the source material. On the page Dracula is much closer to the Nosferatu of Max Shreck, and it's not his story as much as it is the rather rag tag band brought together to fight him. Hammer very much convinced generations that it was Van Helsing who fought Dracula but Seward, Arthur, Quincey and Harker play just as big a role in the book. Yet I adore the Hammer films (the first two inparticular) and they have a healthy disregard for the source. I'd be happy to see how the Sherlock gang put their spin on this. BF's adaptation - to speak to Dracula broadly - is pretty fantastic. Gattis gives a great 'count (sorry) of himself and since he's a MASSIVE horror buff, his performance takes inspiration from quite a lot of screen Draculas. A word though for the wonderful Naxos version from the 90s with Brian Cox and Heathcote Williams. It's a bit too abridged but I'm very nostalgic for it. Along with Tony Robinson's retellings of Homer's Illiad, it's one of the first things that made me a fan of audio drama. And since this thread is about the makers of Sherlock doing Dracula There's also a rather wonderful Sherlock Holmes Vs. Dracula which sees events of Stoker take place from Holme's POV, so things start with the mystery of the skeletal ghost ship rather than in Transylvania. It's pretty fantastic. And it's free to hear on youtube: www.youtube.com/watch?v=3fC3QzG_nGMNick Courtney even pops up as Lestrade.

I read it & found it too crowded trying to insert Holmes into the Dracula story.

Oh no please don't, i loved Gatiss performance as Dracula as a Big Finish audio but the Dracula story's been done to death on tv & film & with Moffat co-writing he'll add some subplot about Van Helsing being a bounty hunter from Pluto & discovers Draculas a alien from Mars. I did try watching 'Sherlock' with my parents this year. As much as I like Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman as actors, I'm afraid I lost interest in the series by the time I saw the third episode.
I can only imagine 'Dracula' under Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss will get mindboggling and far too complex for us to understand. Not I want to watch 'Dracula' anyway, but 'complicated' is about as much as I can describe Steven Moffat these days. It pains me regarding Mark Gatiss to be involved in this as well as I like his writing for 'Doctor Who'.

Tut Tut Tut. Clue... Vampire Gothic horror story written by an Irish author long before Bram Stoker thought of it!

There’s a horror movie called Alien? That’s really offensive. No wonder everyone keeps invading you.

Carmilla is a novel by Sheridan Le Fanu. It's a bit older than Dracula and features a female vampire. There's a bit of... subtext.

Tim. Did you start at season one? You can't have found season one too complicated surely?

Tim. Did you start at season one? You can't have found season one too complicated surely? I did start at Series 1, yes. Maybe I was distracted by something and perhaps I'm being a little too harsh in my opinion. Maybe I just prefer 'Doctor Who' and 'Sherlock' is one of those shows that's way above my head.
I should give it another chance, but at the moment I'm currently enjoying what I'm seeing already in the new 'Doctor Who' series.
Tim.
