I had to check this wasn't the 1st of April.
Not that I don't like K9, I do, but I'm left wondering how K9 could carry off a movie, how does the K9 I'm familair with engage the audience, show emotion, feel jeopardy. It strikes me that he will have a human co-star.
I also guess the film will be aimed at Children and not be the blockbuster the article seems to convey.

Well, he did have human co-stars in the spin-off TV show (which wasn't very good).

Omega is back! Again!
Is this the reason that Romana never defeated Omega in the last Gallifrey box set? The mysterious stranger that rescued her was actually this new version of K-9!
Near in will be one of the dashing hero promised in the announcement with Romana and Ace as the heroines. It all makes perfect sense.
I know that the clocks go back tonight, but I didn't realise they were going as far back as April the 1st.

Interesting news. I didn't think the K9 TV series was awful, however it felt pitched at a slightly lower audience than The Sarah Jane Adventures (which had a fairly universal tone with some quite dark stories at points) whilst emulating its format of teenage sidekicks running against the monster of the week. There were some inventive monsters; they even did a Cold War flashback episode, unfortunately the futuristic London setting seemed just a teensy bit unbelievable. Black robot policemen with funny voices; Australian actors trying to pull of British and failing; Australian locations looking nothing like the UK. I don't know why they couldn't have set it in 2050s Brisbane or similar, besides Doctor Who being a British series. However based on the description it seems this version of K9 may lose the Australian aspect.
The UK broadcast schedule killed it as well, with daily morning broadcasts on Channel 5 months after its broadcast in Australia etc.
The original concepts for K9 stemming back to the 90s seemed far more interesting, a series called The Adventures of K9/K9 Adventures which featured K9 in space alongside a cast of characters including a space gypsy and a female robot. Which would suit his redesign a little better than Earth as it's quite a futuristic design.
It's been 5 years since the series aired, and 7 when it is released, so the amount of people I care is much. I'll still watch it, but I doubt there will be much to had in terms of story or cinematography. But definitely fun for the kids I'm sure. Since when does Bob Baker have the rights to Omega though?

Since he wrote The Three Doctors?

Since he wrote The Three Doctors? It would be unusual having obtained permission to use someone else's character to retain that permission ad infinitum. Also as The Three Doctors was a BBC production, I'm not at all sure permission was needed, the production (script included) had access to whatever the BBC had access to.

He created the character, and back then the writers that were not BBC staff kept the rights to their characters. And he might have given Big Finish a non-exclusive license to use Omega, but still kept the rights for his own use. Of course, he can't call him a Time Lord.

Since he wrote The Three Doctors? I've never watched The Three Doctors, so... Are the image rights for Omega with the BBC though? I expect this may be a case of another radical redesign as was the case with K9.

It's quite likely. But Omega was redesigned already once anyway.

John Leeson is likely to reprise his role. I wonder if they'll get Stephen Thorne too, though!

I think this film could have potential if it has more of a 80s feel-good blockbuster tone and ignores the TV series entirely but I hope if Omega is redesigned, it doesn't make the character totally unrecognisable. You can still recognise K9 via his TV series redesign so you should therefore still be able to recognise Omega.

Since he wrote The Three Doctors? Although, of course, his co-writer Dave Martin seems to have had to rename the character 'Omegon' for "K9 and the Time Trap".

Awesome! I've been hoping that K9 would return to our screens at some point ever since SJA ended. Omega is also a great villain. I can't wait!

If the Benny audios could use Irving Braxiatel for ten years without using the words "Doctor", "Time Lord" and "TARDIS", I'm sure that Bob Baker can do the same for Omega in this. They even alluded to the Time War, without actually calling it that, near the end of the single CD releases. In fact, Big Finish were able to develop a whole world around Benny without directly referring to the Doctor at all, although there was a precedent with her novel range following the end of the New Adventures (when the BBC revoked Virgin's right to the Doctor Who licence). The Daleks did make a big appearance, but that's pretty much it.

Anyone know what's happened with this? About as much as I expected. Looks like it's in the same development phase as that new series of Blakes 7.
