Holy sh*t!!! They actually went for it! I'm only familiar with Whitaker from Attack The Block, from what I remember she was pretty good in it, very good comic timing, so I can't really judge her abilities as an actor, though I certainly like her look and she's definitely a contrast to Capaldi. My concerns about Chibnall's writing and how a female Doctor is handled still stand, but my initial reaction was cautious excitement, very glad it's not a Tennant clone and I do think/hope this will refresh the show for better or worse, glad Chibnall and the BBC have the confidence to take such a gamble. Still in shock, no doubt people will find a way to blame Moffat for this.

Well, in a recent thread I outlined why I didn't want a female Doctor. That said, I am prepared to give her a fair crack of the whip... ...but I will say, still being very new to accepting the concept, that I am at a bit of a loss While I'm not prepared to give up immediately on the show like some (that's not a judgement by the way, I understand where some of you are coming from), I will be hesitant going into Series 11. (For those who don't know about the post I'm talking about, here's a link to the thread - I'm about half way down the page: notthebigfinishforum.freeforums.net/thread/3254/wanting-female-doctor-make-sexist )

Looking very elfin. That could really work as a contrast to Capaldi. Yep it really could. I really didn't think that a new producer would want to shake things up from the start, but that teaser has proved me wrong and I feel happy about that😊 For a second when I saw the coat I thought it was John Barrowman! Then they showed the feet and it was obviously a woman. My 13 yr old son isn't impressed, but the wife and my daughter are intrigued. So you win some you lose some. Change my dear. And it seems, not a moment too soon.

Ok. See you in 3 years. Unless you are sticking with my for big finish reviews. Cheers. What if she's a moderate hit and they follow with another female Doctor?

Very poor style of the announcement - made comparatively quietly on the News Channel. What a contrast with the BBC1 primetime high drama of Peter Capaldi's announcement. EDIT: LOL! I missed it on BBC1. Can you believe that, the most anticipated Doctor announcement ever and I missed it channel hopping!

Well I find that a bit depressing, to be honest. Mainly because I just don't think she has presence or gravitas enough to own the screen as The Doctor. I just find her a bit bland and vanilla in everything I've seen her in, and if they were dead set on the female Doctor route I just wish they'd gone after someone with a bit more personality.
Still, as ever, I'll wait and see, and hope to be proven wrong.

Chibnall said he would take risks and here we go. I have faith it will pay off.
Meanwhile Facebook comment sections are now on fire.

Many of us including myself were skeptical of Missy but that turned out great. She was one of the best incarnations of The Master. I for one will give Jodie Whittaker an open mind.

It'll be interesting to see how many people threatening to give up on the show actually do follow through with it, and how much it'll affect the show. I'm pretty sure this'll give the show a bit of a boost, especially to begin with, because I'll bet you there's plenty of people out there eager to see how this is going to go. Definitely a risk, but I have faith in Chibnall.

Time will tell but I really do hope they don't go trundling off down the love interest route too much.
