Yeah, Amazon are useless when it comes to things like the reasons for delays or the like - sits like TVShowsonDVD are much better. Amazon just have the standardised forms they'll fill in the blanks on and send to customers. Hey, if enough people shift their orders to the UK, the more chance we get more animations, and sooner anyway. I'm not arguing, just curious. Why do you think that is? Netflix didn't have all the original series on DVD, so I bought whatever they didn't have from Amazon US. I would have thought that sales are sales and that this is a multinational, therefore, Amazon would track total sales and BBC would know. If there's a solid reason for only buying Who from Amazon UK, that's exactly what I'm going to do from now on. Costs a few more bucks in shipping, but, it's contributing to a cause. Purely speculative but buying it now means it sells from Day 1 in the UK. Saving your money on a US release that (especially for the bluray) might not happen means that Shada will sell less in the interim. It grosses either a lot less than it would if US buyers can cough up now, or at best takes longer to break even. If every US fan intending to buy Shada bought the UK one, it'd be a much bigger hit here in the UK and the demand would be easier to assess for future animation . If there's nothing for you guys to buy.....you can't support it and the UK one sells less because you're not importing it. Much harder for BBC Worldwideto determine if its a hit or not - and since they tend to be region free anyway, there's little to lose. You guys didn't get the McGann movie on blur or Power Of The Daleks on blu either, couple that with the DVD line for CLassic Who going OOP then making the release as successful as possible in one region has to be a good thing for the future of the range. You're right, sales ARE sales but it's clear that the Region 1/A market isn't getting the same level of care and haven't since at least 2013 when the DVDs started being deleted. If that were to happen to the UK market too, physical media for the show would be in real trouble.

Amazon Canada still shows a January 9th release. I'm wondering if the U.S. delay is due to something BBC America is doing - if so then it wouldn't impact Canada as BBC Canada has no affiliation. Or it could just be that Amazon Canada is going to pull the old last minute "there has a been a delay with this item and we don't know when it will be released" trick on January 9th. Not to be a downer but wouldn't hold my breath according to... "Amazon.com has changed at the top to say "Currently Unavailable," and if you scroll down to the "Product details" section of that listing it gives a date of December 18, 2018...a year and three weeks from today! The Amazon.ca (Canada) listing has not been changed yet. However, a Canadian retailer has sent us a screen shot from Warner Home Video of Canada's password-protected B2B site, showing that the studio has issued a "street date correction": the old date shown is 1/9/2018, and the new street date listed is 9/4/2018" www.tvshowsondvd.com/news/Doctor-Shada/23830I never said that I think it will be released on the 9th, just that as of now Amazon Canada has yet to change things. Both of the possibilities I mentioned are possible and have happened with other products in the past. As to ordering it it from Amazon UK - the shipping makes it too pricey for my taste. I don’t care enough to pay extra to have it right away. I’ll happily spend the time getting my reading pile cut down.

Well, the site seem to think that, yes, while both possibilities are possible...it's much more probable to be delayed along with the US version and have seen evidence of the delay affecting Canada too. I'd imagine people would rather get the heads up with the latest info not to expect Amazon.Ca to come through for them. You may want to wait - others like MrPerson won't want to and seem to be happy to have the options. Only directing those that are interested in the release to the best way to see it sooner than next Autumn!

Ian Levine's review...
"The music is amazing. Full marks Mark Ayres. The film transfer is beautiful and the restoration is breathtaking on the video footage. Full marks Peter Crocker. But there are so many key scenes simply missing, that it feels like merely the edited highlights only. The animation is acceptable but the character designs are abominable. Particularly Skagra and Claire. The sets are just tragic. In the Krarg Carrier Ship you can see the real walls from the open door of the Professor's room. This version made no effort whatsoever to match the real original set designs. Our version had EVERY set totally accurate to the true designs. And Shada's interiors were supposed to be dark red. This was clearly specified in the script. The prisoners were supposed to be Lucretia Borgia, Salome, Rasputin etc - all named in the original paperwork - plus a dalek, cyberman, Zygon and Wirrn. Christopher Neame's performance was far too subtle. This was a mad OTT season 17 villain, and was supposed to be played as such. At the end of the day there were so many wonderful scenes omitted that it had no flow. OUR VERSION WAS SOOOO MUCH BETTER - apart from the music."
FWIW, Ian talking about the "missing scenes" is nonsense - his complete version (longer than even the leaked one) animated EVERY bit of the script and some of the eps ended up close to 40 (!) minutes so clearly that was not an accurate version of what the 1979 version would have been like, with the 25 minute cap on eps. Essentially he took the shooting script and animated that completely ignoring that at least 10-15 minutes per ep would have gone due to time constraints. So his "definitive" Shada is really just the longest one.

Is there some validity about his criticisms towards the animation of the 2017 version of Shada? Is Ian Levine's animated Shada superior in any aspects?

Shada and Mission To The Unknown were leaked by someone he worked with and then fell out with, they were both on Youtube for a while.

Yes, there is valid criticism to be made - there is for every creative piece ever made - but there's just as much to be levelled towards his production for it's bloated reverence in refusing to edit the overlong script. But, as ever, Ian wants to babyface himself. His version wasn't just "better" it was "SOOOO MUCH BETTER" - I guess he uses caps to show he really means it...

Although very true in your assessment, that's just Ian's ongoing boastful personality coming through that I've learned to disregard. He's got the notion about loving Doctor Who right.

It's not his love for Doctor Who that's the problem, it's the fact that he thinks he owns Doctor Who and the rest of fandom should be bowing and scraping to him!

After saving it (in shrink-wrap!) for almost a week and hardly daring to visit any website in the last fortnight for fear of spoilers... Saturday night was Shada steelbook night! Almost forty years but worth the wait! I'm comparing with the original 1992 VHS, not the later DVD, so the restored original footage was a total transformation and 1970s Cambridge in May in Autumn looked great in HD. I liked the animation and although I had wondered how it would be, hopping back-and-forth between live and animated, after the first couple of switches I hardly noticed. Except I liked the animated Kraags better- even though the live ones looked more impressive than I remembered; it's a while since I last watched. And the space model work - then and now - is impressive as the BBC workshop always was at the time, and very authentic. Mark Ayres' 5:1 soundtrack and music are superb, a major highlight of the release and the voice work for the animated sections matched up very well with the original. And hearing Tom Baker and Lalla Ward cast off 38 years and perform their end-of-season epic at last was a total joy. I had a slight brain-fade around halfway (that darn sphere I expect ) and briefly imagined I was listening to the complete original soundtrack with lost video replaced by animation! That's how convincing the total experience was for me. It's ironic that only because it was unfinished can we now enjoy this excellent story complete with the Fourth Doctor AND complete on BF audio with the Eighth Doctor - what a bonus that is! I rate Douglas Adams' story very highly indeed - of course it 'goes on a bit' at times, it's a classic six-parter and they mostly did - but it's inventive, has Time Lord mystery and proper monsters, some especially wonderful dialogue and a rather charming (now historic) portrayal of Cambridge college life. Pass me a toasted muffin, please! And finally, the finale - now I had by Herculean efforts remained spoiler-free - except from my own imagination, which would not shut up and wait! So I had guessed the surprise in advance, because there was only one surprise that would justify all the excitement and because Douglas Adams had provided exactly the right lines at the right time in the story almost as if he'd had a tip-off from the future... But even though I'd guessed it was coming, the 'surprise' was sheer delight and (I'll admit it) worth one very tiny tear as well! (Us big tough classic-series fans eh? ) 'Doctor Who' is always good fun, but every now and then, travelling through Time with the Doctors can be truly magnificent, even if we only travel one way...

The Shada Blu-ray arrived at my house today, almost a month earlier than Amazon said it would. Unfortuanetly, I won’t be going home until Friday, so I still have to wait to see it.

Has anyone else from the US bought the "region free" Blu-Ray of Shada from Amazon UK and is having problems? I simply cannot get it to play, but all my other DVDs/Blu-Rays play just fine.
I could be missing something because I'm rather annoyed, and perhaps this'll be a draft for an email to tech support and/or reason for returning, BUT....
I put it in the player. A screen comes up with a cartoon console room. It says "Doctor Who Shada Disc 1", and a voice announces "to select audio navigation, press enter now."
First of all, I do not have and never have had an "enter" button on a remote. If at that point, I use an "options" button to bring up a menu where I can select play disc, I get a message saying that that is not authorized for this disc.
Fine, so I hit the "OK" and/or "select" button on my remote(s). That brings me to a new screen where I am invited to add "apps" to my blu-ray player. Apps ?!?
Now, I don't have a problem with my blu-ray player - I tested this on other blu-rays once this happened just to make nothing was somehow deleted, etc - and this was supposed to be a region free DVD. None of the mask me for apps. But on this potential app-adding screen, there is an option with a disc-image on it, to watch the DVD. If I select that I just get brought back to the first screen ("A screen comes up with a cartoon console room. It says "Doctor Who Shada Disc 1", and a voice announces "to select audio navigation, press enter now."").
If instead of hitting any button when it says "Doctor Who Shada Disc 1", I simply wait, it doesn't play either.
I forgot what I pressed but I managed to get to a further screen a few times. It said:
Play Main Feature Audio Options Subtitles
I selected the first and hit the "OK" button. That said "currently prohibited for this disc." In fact, any menu option I can call up from my Blu-Ray player, at any point, tells me that trying to play the disc from beginning is "prohibited".
Select it and hit play, and I am brought right back to the first screen ("A screen comes up with a cartoon console room. It says "Doctor Who Shada Disc 1", and a voice announces "to select audio navigation, press enter now."")
Am I losing my mind? Being a complete idiot?
Again, I definitely ordered the region-free, my orders confirm it, and my Blu-Ray player definitely plays other Blu-Ray discs no problem. Red Dwarf Blu-Ray, the Hamlet w/ Brannaugh DVD we have from Netflix, yadda yadda. Everything else works.
