I always look at Never Say Never Again with a sigh of what might have been. The original intent for the movie was Connery wanted to play an older 007, one in the twilight of his career. The film would have been quite a bit darker. The failure of the Connery & Audrey Hepburn led Robin & Marian, dealing with a late in life adventure for Robin Hood and Maid Marian, caused the producers to force a shift in tone for movie. You can sometimes see the shading of something darker in Never Say Never Again but it quickly quips its way out of it. A pity.

Interestingly, you can read the original script -- penned by Len Deighton (of IPCRESS File fame), Kevin McClory and Sean Connery -- here on 007 Dossier. Magic of the internet. Wow - I had no idea Len Deighton had been involved in writing anything James Bond. I loved both his spy-with-no-name series & his Bernard Samson series, both of which seemed to me closer to Le Carré than to Fleming!

I loved both his spy-with-no-name series & his Bernard Samson series, both of which seemed to me closer to Le Carré than to Fleming! You'll definitely enjoy this, James Bond of the Secret Service has all the Deighton detail, alongside some over-the-top 70s Bond-style escalation. I always look at Never Say Never Again with a sigh of what might have been. The original intent for the movie was Connery wanted to play an older 007, one in the twilight of his career. You can sometimes see the shading of something darker in Never Say Never Again but it quickly quips its way out of it. A pity. Ironic considering how much of a gamechanger The Wrath of Khan was for Star Trek. I think it might've been produced in the wrong half of the decade, The Return of the Man from UNCLE wasn't particularly good either. As it is, Never Say Never Again has the same half-and-half feeling of Octopussy, although it's much more present in that film with the circus juxtaposed against the atomic thriller plot. It nearly works, but it's a bit like a ship without any wind in her sails: pretty to look at, but no sense of momentum or drive. *thinking* That said, I suppose it's got its good points too. The neurotic Largo is marvellous (I think I like him more than his Eon counterpart actually...) and it's definitely the most visually cinematic of the 80s films. Bringing aboard Irvin Kershner and the production team from Raiders of the Lost Ark was a really strong move. I'd like to have seen them try their hand at The Living Daylights. With his particular focus on characters work and their sweeping ornateness, that could've been rather fun.

It looks great. I love the way it incorporates images from the different opening / closing sequences of TV series.

Thank you for the link, so we have a few more of the cast confirmed if not who they are playing! I am very much looking forward to hearing this. I hope it does well and we get some more adventures.

If you've read the book you'll likely be better placed to guess, taking into account the role yet to be cast characters play and how important to the narrative they are (are there characters that could be merged into one for the audio or excised altogether?).

In this month's edition of Vortex magazine Nicholas Briggs commented on the letters page that Big Finish have a few plans up their sleeves for further Avengers releases, which they hope will come to fruition soon. Fingers crossed that they're successful!

Beth Chalmers sounds like she should lay off the woodbines! But she does sound like Cathy Gale!! I am really looking forward to this release.

Well now...that has to be the first podcast tease in quite a while that had me groaning in frustration when it ended. Not because it was bad, but because I was totally absorbed in what was happening. Fingers crossed for an early September release.

When's this released? It's still listed as August yet BF don't normally release on a Friday.

Pushed back till September
www.bigfinish.com/whats_new/month/09/2018
Unfortunately, due to unavoidable production issues, this release has had to be postponed until September. We will be announcing a new release date as soon as we are able to confirm when stock will be available to ship from our warehouse.

It's a shame this has been delayed, but judging from the extract in the podcast it sounds as though it will be worth the wait. My only quibble after listening to the extract was that it seemed to have the 'wrong' theme tune. As the story is set in the Tara/Mother era it would have been nice to have used the series 6 theme. However, that's a very minor issue and the rest of the extract sounded great.
