Episode VIII: Having enjoyed Michael's encouraged discussion of the Force Awakens two years ago; I was a little bit after the fact disappointed that last year's Rogue One didn't have a dedicated thread created for it. Let's see if this year's Last Jedi qualifies for some conversation.(I won't be seeing this film until close to the end of December.)

Well I thought it was rubbish. I'm sure there will be plenty of conversation on this mess of a movie.

This is the first time in a long time that I'm excited by a Star Wars movie. I have loved all of Rian Johnson's previous movies and based on reviews I've read, it sounds like he was able to make a Star Wars version of a Rian Johnson film.

Subplot involving Finn & Rose was pointless, stalled the films momentum, went nowhere & reminded me of the worst cgi stuff in Phantom Menace. They really didn't seem to know what to do with the characters every time the plot focus shifted from Rey, Luke & Kylo. Too much humour that didn't fit the tone of the film, in fact it often undercut more serious scenes in a bad way. A complete lack of plot, very little actually happened considering the running time & by the end there is nothing dramatic set up for the final chapter.

Felt less like a follow up to Force Awakens and more a marvel action movie, overlong, tonally confused, craps on Luke's character, way too much ill judged humour and some very weird/pretentious plot points, it answers few of the questions Force Awakens posed and opens up a whole new swathe of its own, really confused on where this leaves things for episode 9.

I enjoyed it. It had 3 or 4 glaring problems (one of which was an egregiously bad use of CGI), but on the whole a solid contribution to this universe.

A atrocious movie, it breaks my heart to say this as i been a huge fan of Star Wars for over 35 yrs & it is,my favourite film franchises at made me fall in love with movies but what The Last Jedi has done is give a two fingered salute to the fans.
Force Awakens set up so theories & questions here's the answers in Last Jedi.
Spoilers. Reys parents were nobody who sold her to slave traders, it doesn't explain how she is so strong with the force, so all those hints to who is Reys parents well there probably The Gallaghers from Shameless.
Kylo Ren. What made him turn to the dark side? Nothing he is just evil, no plot explaining why he turned & what a p..s poor villian he is, we gone from Palpatine & Vader to some shouty dude & a poor mans vader who throws tantrums ruling the galaxy.
Luke Skywalker. Awful arc, written totally out of character, no way would he abandon his sister & become a hermit, the training scenes with Rey were rubbish & Lukes confrontation with Kylo in the climax was awful & lacked spectacle (why didn't he destroy the first orders At Ats in a epic action scene, oh & he dies becomes one with the force because projecting himself a long way away took it's toll, bulls..t a terrible way to exit this very important character.
Snoke, is he Darth Plagueus, a clone of Anakin, well we'll never know, so powerful with the force he is he can't see or sense a light saber vibrating next to him & his royal guards must be half asleep cause they didn't notice either as Kylo murdered him.
No plot, 152 minutes were for the most part the first order can track ships through hyperspace but with all there high technology cannot catch up with the rebellion shipwaiting for it to run out of fuel.
The Finn & Rose subplot was lame & Captain Phasmas small appearance was a waste, a character built up to be this bad ass stormtrooper but has done nothing memorable in this or Force Awakens.
Add to the fact the light saber battles were shockingly slow, nothing is explained, the plot isn't expanded upon & no questions have been answered this was just a abomination of a movie & it has literally broke my heart, spirit & have totally lost faith in films.
Lucas had his faults but he did deliver epic action, this film tramples on his legacy & the world he created.
I have discarded Force Awakens from my collection, Star Wars concludes with Return Of The Jedi for me & i have no interest in Episode 9, i never thought the day would come when I'd turn my back on this franchise but on December 14th 2017 that's exactly what i did.
F..k you Disney & Rian Johnson.

I think the best thing about it was Adam Driver and Mark Hamill's acting, regardless of how much I disliked the way their characters were written both gave incredible award worthy performances i.m.o.

Well, I have to say I completely disagree with the rest on here. I thought it was great - the characters, plot, character interactions, acting and directing. Was blown away by it, honestly loved it.

F..k you Disney & Rian Johnson. I Agree with a lot of that. But I didn't mind the fact that Rey's parents were nobodies. Although if Snoke had revealed that she & Kylo were brother & sister then it could have led to her turning to the dark side. Snoke playing on jealousy, on the fact that Kylo was given the opportunity to learn the force etc but Rey just dumped on a planet alone. I didn't mind the fact that there was no backstory for Snoke, in the original trilogy we didn't know anything about the Emperor. But killing him off was done in such a stupid anti-climactic way. I didn't even mind the divisive character arc of Luke, although I was hoping this would be a set up for his redemption in ep 9. But he died at the end, again in such an anti-climactic way. If he does come back as a force ghost then what was the point of killing him off? For shock value? It is not just a terrible Star Wars film but a terrible film full stop! Any middle film in a trilogy should build on the plot threads of the previous film & also set up new plots & cliffhangers for the next film. This did neither. It ignored most of what went before. In fact now I have no interest in watching TFA ever again, even though I really enjoyed it now it is a pointless film thanks to TLJ. By the end of the film most of the characters are pretty much in the same place they were at the start. Just an illusion of character arcs. Nothing of any real consequence had happened. Who actually is the big villain now? Kylo? What is the motivation now for any of the characters? Why did everything seem so small? Hardly anything shown of the wider conflict. What there are just a handful of rebels now? A lot of the action also felt like The Phantom Menace, terrible CGI with all those space llamas. In fact that whole section reminded me of the worst elements of the prequels & it was ultimately pointless as it went nowhere & had no impact on the movie as a whole. & the humour. Good god this is Star Wars not Guardians of the Galaxy! The tone of the humour here was cringe inducing with every character wisecracking & undermining the seriousness of any situation with a cheesy punchline. So nothing really mattered. & as you say there was no plot! It all took place over a couple days I guess? The slowest space pursuit in history lol Oh & poor Carrie Fisher, what a terrible way to say goodbye. She does a Buzz Lightyear impresssion then spends most of the movie in a coma! They literally had no idea what to do with her so shove her offscreen for most of the movie. Then when she is reunited with Luke, something that should be an epic emotional moment, she makes a joke about her haircut! I guess some may enjoy this, & there is certainly nothing wrong theoretically with trying to shake up the franchise (Rogue One was great fun with a different tone) but turning Star Wars into a generic Marvel movie & writing it with a total disregard for the characters is not the way to go! Good luck to fans that had fun with this mess of a movie but currently at time of writing this is rated 56% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes which is less than Phantom Menace!!! From now on there are only 3 Star Wars movies for me, the original trilogy which I will watch again over Christmas & enjoy immensely.

As someone who isn't such a huge Star Wars fan, I thought the film was just OK. I was never bored, and it certainly had its moments, but I wasn't feeling it that much. Like TFA and RO, the climax was awesome, but everything leading up to that was so weirdly structured and more complicated than it needed to be. (The opening scene where Poe is messing with Hux was weird; felt like something Joss Whedon would write for a MARVEL film).
I think the film actually did quite well retroactively amending some of the issues I had with the previous episode, and it does a good job building off the OT lore while forging a new one. And it really was awesome to have Mark Hamill back in the spotlight as crusty old Luke.
