*covers eyes* I'm not looking! Just a day to go until the UK premiere. A very long and painfully slow day to avoid spoilers of any sort. *starts nervously twitching* I can do it... *peeks through fingers. Awed at ability to type accurately with eyes covered.* 🤪 *In case you haven't figured it out yet, I'm rather looking forward to watching this.. Well.....so far so very good. The forty minutes just flew by. If I had to sum up 'Rememberance' without spoilers..a lovely dose of nostalgia without being mawkishly sentimental coupled with a sense of being at the start of something new and different to what we've known. And questions...oh, I have lots of questions. Hopefully some of which will be answered in the next nine weeks. Been a long, long time since I felt the rush of enthusiasm to watch a Star Trek episode or film...and until tonight I hadn't realised just how much I've missed that.😊

Now that's more like it. Put Discovery in the bin where it belongs. We have Picard now.

Picard is the hero of my childhood and the Next Generation will always be one of my all time favorites.
To this day, I still have not seen Discovery (I still do not have subscribed to Netflix and could not make myself pay for it yet). I look to Star Trek for some "feel-good" TV, this is why I adore the Orville. If I want realism and depression, I can as well go to work.

Well, that was rather good, wasn't it? Really looking forward to next week.
Yes, it was exposition. Yes, it did some re-hash of other sci fi ideas. But is was just like a wave of endorphins washing over me with seeing my childhood hero back in action. And that shot at the end- was that not made of pure awesome? Basically fore-shadows all that the series will be about, without previews Who style. I am of course talking about {Spoiler} The Romulans reconstructing a Borg Cube So all we see and hear in the first episode might point towards borgified Romulans as the villains... or maybe that is a clever red herring!
I absolutely love what they are doing with the Romulans.
However, I can already hear the usual suspects scream about "socialist politics in sci-fi" and "SJW propaganda", just the way certain political topics are raised. Well, this is what Sci-Fi was invented for! To give a mirror to the current society and to show how it could develop. Choosing the {Spoiler} Romulans as prominent characters is a great choice. I have always loved them. They can be very sinister, and they make for great ambiguous characters. They are not really evil (is there even any truly evil race in Star Trek?) and there are good people among them... but as a long-time Trekkie (for more than 30 years now!), I would not trust a Romulan further than I can see them. I wonder what this means for Picards Romulan house keepers? Sleeper agents was my first thought?
I also think I have to agree with Causality.
I actually thought {Spoiler} Well, what an interesting mix of Firefly, Blade Runner and the Geth story line in Mass Effect. But, if they are going to steal stuff, they at least stole from the best. Wasn't there a famous writer (I forgot who it was) who said "It is better to borrow wisely than to invent badly?"

With reference to the housekeepers, hopefully that will be the main point of their role - to take our pre-conceived ideas about their race/nationality and slap us hard around the face several times with it before eventually handing the remains back. You said it yourself - there are good people among them...but thirty years of your own history with Trek means you would not trust them further than you can see them. What then if it turns out that Zhaban and Laris are nothing more than two decent and kind individuals with a deep loyalty to Picard and absolutely nothing like the individuals we saw during The Next Generation's run?

I really hope this is what they are doing. Just because it would subvert everybody's expectations. And I think that would make a great part of the storytelling.
Well, we also had the Romulans in Classic, Deep Space Nine and even Voyager (where they are mostly antagonists). But we also get to see some decent Romulans, especially in the Next Generation in The Enemy, Reunification, Face of the Enemy. And that prison camp commander in Birthright also was not a bad guy, just the opposite.
This is what makes this so interesting. It could go either way.

Zhaban and Laris are also currently appearing in the prequel tie-in comic Picard: Countdown. The series isn't finished yet, but so far they seem decent in that too

But that would not really be Trek... maybe that is why they go for a more comparative to current events approach?

Re-watching this. I think I found another easter-egg.
Anyone remember Porthos? Captain Archer's dog from Enterprise? Back in the day they cast a FEMALE dog in the role because it would have been politically incorrect to see male animal parts dangling on TV. For whatever reason that might have been. Well, Picard's dog "Number One" is VERY male. His dangly bits even get a close up.
I only just realized.
It made me laugh. It is hilarious they included this as an in-joke.

Picard Ep 2 disappointed me massively. THey can't really expect us to think it's some kind of reveal that Treadaway's Romulan was actuallly a baddie can they? That's the most hamfisted reveal I've seen in a long time if so. It was amateur.
I like the idea of Picard being against the Federation but call me hypocriticial but the f-bomb here was worse than in Discovery. There it was used in a new show with no old characters so I could kinda glance past it. Having it here when we're used to 15 years of no colourful language at all struck me as "We can swear...so let's". The Admiral could easily have gotten her anger over without it. I'm no puritan but it again seemed out of place.
The political allegory is so on the nose it's almost hard to take at this point, and that's not good 2 eps in. Something needs to give soon. I can't take the Romulans as refugees while the Federation is shutting it's doors thing much more. I honestly thought this show would be deeper than Discovery and I don't think it is once you remove the affection we have because of the main character. If this were a new character, a similar Admiral who was having the same experiences I don't think the show would be getting a tenth of the buzz it is. It's all well acted enough but it's what they're given to do that's the issue. If the Romulans are really just going to use the revived Borg cube as a weapon to take revenge on the Federation who wronged them I'd kinda check out. It feels like I can kinda write the remainder of the season's outline at this point and, again, this soon in? If that's the case...I worry. For a show ditching TNG's standalone nature for season arcs...you need to be more deep in the story and not show all the cards too soon.
Still...it's already renewed for Season 2. We all know Trek takes a season or two to find it's feet. And maybe the show will pick up when Picard gets the team together and we get off Earth (why did Orla's character act like the mystery twin being off Earth is a big deal? It's Trek, going off Earth is easier than me going to Edinburgh, 45 miles away). The show needs a pick me up and I'm not sure the nostalgia ticket of Troi and Riker is it. Maybe Seven Of Nine and Hugh, with the Borg connections, will be more important to the plot.

Maybe Seven Of Nine and Hugh, with the Borg connections, will be more important to the plot. I just finished watching the episode. I have to say I saw it much less critical than you did.
I actually do not think Treadaway's Romulan is a baddie. In the trailers, we see him as part of Picard's crew. I think he will become important, but not as a villain, I think he will turn out as one of the good guys. Just the way he plays it. It is clear he has his own agenda. But that does not necessarily mean an evil agenda.
I also do not mind the swearing too much, as long as it does not go over board, and it did not do so here (in my opinion).
I still have not seen Discovery, so I cannot make any connection or comparison myself.
As for the political commentary... yes, it is on the nose. Only slightly more subtle than Doctor Who at the moment.
I have no issue with the message, and by all means, call me a "liberal".
But I agree that there are less placative ways of presenting a message. It can get a bit much after a while.
I do not think the Romulans are just using the Borg cube as weapon to get revenge. That would be a bit cheap and we already had that plot in the movies. That would be the cheapest re-hash and I would not only be disappointed, but offended to be honest.
I think there is more to it than we can see at the moment. There is still some vital plot element missing.
Yeah, Troi and Riker will only be glorified extras in the next episode, I do not think it will be more. Just for old times sake.
But I believe Seven of Nine and Hugh will play a much bigger part and I do hope we get a Geth/ Kaylon plot, not just a Romulan revenge plot. Or another Borg invasion.
After all, Data's daughter is involved, this will go deeper.
At least I still keep my hopes up for that.
