Hello again. It will be interesting to see which Doctor is used in this year's winning entry. Don't be disappointed if you didn't hear anything this year. I've entered 3 years running. Eight submissions in total and never received an email. I think my stories just aren't right for Short Trips and the quality of everyone else is so high. I suspect Big Finish have hundreds of entries and can't reply to all of them. The writing is the thing. Well done those who did receive feedback and well done to those who submitted their writing. Rejection, is a frequent occurance for writers, you have to pick yourself up and try something else. There are other short story competitions, writing for online short story collections and fan fiction. The important thing is keep writing, learn your craft and above all enjoy telling stories. I am currently working on a children's book and still have exactly the same aim I had as a child to get at least one book published. All the best, fellow wordsmiths. ^ This is so fundamentally important. Do not ever let a rejection stop you from writing. Better yet, never let a rejection take away your joy for writing. Always remember that its sting is finite. This is your skill, this is your ability, these are your words and worlds. There is always the opportunity to get back up and keep writing. Well done to everyone and I hope you keep at it; in whatever form it need be. Please allow me to express a huge congratulations to the winner and every single one who entered this year. I myself have submitted two entries that turned out to be an improvement to last year, but of course feel a bit disappointed that I wasn't among the shortlist this time round. Nevertheless, I would be very happy to announce that I will be publishing my Tenth Doctor Short Trip on FanFiction.Net instead of Mixital, due to having multiple technical issues with the latter site's features. Wishing to get it completed later this month, but, if not, certainly be no later than Paul Spragg's birthday (29 December), as I'm quite close to completing the rough draft (over 6,000 words!).

I have also entered three years running, but only with three entries. Also haven't ever head back. I think my problem was waiting too long before starting and rushing the stories. Reading them back I have noticed some glaring mistakes, for instance, my entry last year was accidentally 3 pages.

Everyone's creative process is different (so ymmv), but we've been having a lot of success with what's called the Pomodoro Technique at the writer's group I run. Basically, what we do is we write for 25 minutes, take a 5-minute break and then work for another 25 minutes. Every fourth break, we take 10 minutes out to stretch our legs and do something else before getting back to it; keeping up that rhythm for as long as necessary (we do four hours). It's surprisingly effective. I really recommend it if you need a deadline to work against, it's helped our writers enormously in pushing through their creative blocks (one's gotten her manuscript finished and sent it off to Hachette's development program just last week).

That's brilliant. I'll have to give it a try some time.

I've posted the full version of one of my entries, The Peace Thieves. The other one is written up but I'm holding on to it in case there's another Temporal Logbook I can submit to.

I'm sure that I can speak for Wolfie on this but I think there might be change we will help publish unused short trip entries through the Divergent Wordsmiths.

Yeah, we'd absolutely be open to the idea. Our preferred format is to release in volumes, so if you would like to see your story in page-based PDF format, click on the info link in my signature. The submissions email should be at the top of the page.

Just be aware writers that we do go through an editing process with you guys to get them to publication and that ongoing commitments -- both to Genesis of Terror and real world -- may mean that development takes some time. That said, our first release, Unbound Imaginings, is a very nice example of what to expect once we're there. Cool, right? If you have a Jago and Litefoot story, I recommend looking at our ongoing anthology, which is still taking submissions.

I might as well consider having my Tenth Doctor entry published in one of your future anthologies, instead of FanFiction.Net; will still use that site for other fan fic projects that are not relevantly Short Trips. Would you mind if I email you the PDF version of my same entry, Wolfie?

I'll say that pdf. is fine as I am more than capable to convert documents if needed Wolfie.

My niece got a lovely "close but not quite" email a couple of weeks ago. I'm hoping she'll actually let me read what she wrote now. I'm usually her unofficial (and sometimes official) in-family script editor when she works on a script - she mostly writes for stage - but to keep things above board she didn't even talk to me about this one. I'm looking forward to seeing what she came up with.
To everybody who had a go or thought about having a go... don't be disheartened if your story didn't hit the spot this year. Every writer goes through that. We all get rejections for our stories and there are many, many reasons for it. I've been writing for a long time and still get the "Neah, it's not for us" emails. I doubt if I can think of a writer who doesn't get that kind of email sometimes. Just shrug, learn what you can from what you wrote and start thinking about the next one. The important thing is to keep trying and even more importantly, to keep on enjoying it.

Yep, that's still fine. You've done the work and we can still read it, so no problem.
