I'm actually happy with the submission limit: it'll encourage more self-discipline, and combat any spreadshot of multiple subpar stories. My hope is that, now with the Doctors increased, it means we won't lose out on having runners up like last year. Sorry to disappoint, but Ian has already said on the BF Podcast that there won’t be any runners up this year

I notice that on the Big Finish ranges page he’s “Doctor Who: The War Doctor”, which stands apart from the Collected title that the other Doctors have, perhaps it’s destined to remain like that! A shame, but I’ve adored what we’ve got from Big Finish; and with Sir John Hurt no less! To be fair, that’s how Eight’s Time War Range is billed too. I’m talking about the Ranges page on the Big Finish site. There’s no separate range for The Eighth Doctor Time War, you either click on The Eighth Doctor Collected, or Doctor Who: The New Series.

Having new series doctors on the table is unexpected! I think the competition will be much stiffer this year as a result. Lots of Who fans only watch the new series (nothing wrong with that) and this will encourage the talented writers among them to try their hand. I'm sticking to writing my story about Five though. I could make other Doctors work but somehow the twist at the end wouldn't have the same kick to it without him.

Hello again. How is everyone? It only seems like yesterday we were all talking about this wonderful opportunity to remember Paul Spragg by contributing to the Big Finish Dr. Who collection.
Some really good advice from everyone there. My advice after starting writing again after a twenty year gap is rather more practical.
BACK UP YOUR WORK. BACK UP YOUR WORK REGULARLY. Don't put it all on a 32GB memory card and then lose the card.
It has meant that a year's worth of writing including entries for past Paul Spragg opportunities are now lost.
This included one called Lost on Earth which featured the Third Doctor and Liz. It featured an alien race stranded on Earth like the Doctor.
I was fascinated to see that the Selim Ulug's brilliant winning entry dealt with the same Doctor and a similar theme.
Anyway, 12 Doctors, I wonder which Doctor they will go with this time. I suppose it is the story that is key every time.
All the best to everyone giving it a go. Have fun with it and if you don't win, try to complete it, edit it and publish it on a fanfiction site such as Teaspoon and an Open Mind or the other sites that are available.
I am going with one classic and one NuWho Doctor. I have the start of the NuWho story written in a notebook. Now then...
"It was a dark and stormy night. The Doctor and Bill were looking desperately for shelter from the gloopy blobs of jelly raining down from the pinky grey sky..." Bonne Chance!

Nowadays, I tend to use Google Docs to work on each submission, which I consider to be much quicker than doing it straight on Word or another desktop software (without the use of a Cloud), and having to bounce them back and forth as individual files/updates.

So I know we're not allowed to use established monsters in our entries, but I'm curious where the line is drawn for "use"? For example, I have an idea for a story that doesn't actually have daleks in it, but would be easier to execute if I could at least mention that they exist.

The Haemovores were mentioned once in the Forever Fallen script and audio, only briefly. I doubt it matters too much if they're referenced by name, say like if you add a hint of continuity to the outline. However, when I messaged Big Finish on this, two years ago, they said: "They're wouldn't be any need to worry about such references [in the outline] at this stage."

I was aware of the prohibition when I wrote the line about the Haemovores, but by that time the story had already been provisionally accepted. I included because at that point I thought the worst that could happen would be that they would say, "Josh, you have to take the line out."

Better to keep established monsters/villains - even mentioning by name - out of the way. We all feel tempted to reference them at any point, whether it's the Daleks, Cybermen, Sontarans, or perhaps the Yeti also. Even if one does incorporate a name to their submission, remove it but keep a note so it's not (completely) forgotten.

I came up with a lovely Benny and eleven story that I never revisited. It was actually(and could still) going to be about something affecting the Batman tv series and that breaking time because of all the other things that then didn't happen.
Seeing him with Benny really gave me an appreciation for his... looniness. Would a companion reignition like that work or should I avoid classic companions if I write for a nü Doctor?
Also I just read Selim's pitch, beautiful prose mate! I need to relisten to Landbound again now!

Or even the one zoe mentions. Was it... the carcus?

There's a scene near the end that will reference the Valeyard, as he plays into the theme of the story. He isn't mentioned by name, but he's heavily implied in that scene, and any fan who knows the very basic concept of the Valeyard will understand the reference. So, I'm not entirely sure what to do. It's a story that I personally love (and ultimately, that's the reason I'm set on sending in the story anyway), yet I'm a bit hesitant since we only get two entries this year, and I hate to think my story will be shot down due referencing a villain that doesn't even make an appearance in the story.

Just be smart in your writing: find a way to reference him without namedropping. Think of interesting descriptors for the Valeyard and play around with what fits best.
