Also, older thread's been locked to help avoid any sort of confusion. Streamlines things.

I am increasingly of the opinion that, while having completed stories to work from does make the synopses better, it certainly doesn't make writing them easier. Squashing a whole page of story into 50 words is agony once, never mind twenty sodding times.

By the way, I've recently learned that it's good manners to compress PDFs before sending them to people. There's a very good free drag-and-drop utility at smallpdf.com. The PDF should look identical afterwards, but make sure to check just in case!

Squashing a whole page of story into 50 words is agony once, never mind twenty sodding times. So say we all. It's even more exciting for a long-form project where you have to compress 100,000 words into two sentences. One to state, another to elaborate with; if you get the chance to reply. I haven't met a single author so far who considers elevator pitches to be easy. Not a one.

Done it! One entry submitted. And I suppose, now that it's sent, there's no harm in posting the little blurb I wrote about it for the body of my e-mail:

Hello! First of all, great thread! Lots of great advice! I was just wondering if there is a general agreement that we should include a blurb in the e-mail. I wasn't going to, but seeing that others have (like Butler's great blurb!), I'm now thinking that I should. Ultimately, I know it probably won't matter either way, but still, I don't want to be the only who doesn't write one. Anyway ... first post!

Second I do: as I mentioned in an earlier page, I consider an extra hook, a way to really sell your reasoning for why this story, why now.
If you don't want to, that's fine. It's just another option.

Yeah, I get that. I sent the first without a blurb and just sent a general, 'Hi, Here is the thingy, etc, etc. Regards...' but it's too late to do anything about that. I'll try and write one for the second submission - it'll just annoy me for a while that I haven't sent a blurb with the first one. (And Ela, I voted in the forum )

(And Ela, I voted in the forum ) I did the same last year and just said “hi, this is my story concept etc” and still got an email back from Ian Atkins saying how he liked the entry, so I don’t think a blurb in the email is required. They have to read through them all anyway, so if your story is good then don’t worry about not grabbing them in the email- they’re not going to rank you on that.
