Just noticed that the Series 3/4 bundle has increased to $93 since October. I can't say I'm surprised. It was inevitable. Prior to the book club offering Series 3 at £18 download and Friday's sale offering each title in Series 4 at £25 download (total £93 - 🤔), who in their right mind would spend £120 on the downloads for the four boxsets when you could buy them in a bundle for just £80? In fact I wouldn't be surprised if the bundle price changes again once the book club offer ends..

I'm about halfway through this and really enjoying both the performances and stories, but is anyone else having issues with the sound design here or might it just be me? I'm not quite sure what it is, it might be that things aren't situated left/right in the mix where I'm more accustomed to hearing them in audios, but things just tend to sound a bit "off". Also it definitely sounds like some important low end frequencies are noticeably absent from Paul Darrow's voice here.
Thought for minute it might be that I recently switched headphones but I did recently re-listen to the first Classic Adventures series and the first two Liberator Chronicles and a number of other older audios without noticing anything like this.
I've also been having troubles with a number of newer releases such as the Monthly Range where I've actually had to turn up the audio to hear one character's lines and then turn it back down because the next person speaking sounds too loud, which is a problem I've had with exceedingly few releases previously.
Anyone else notice any of this or am I the strange one in the room as usual?

I finished listening to this yesterday - on the same MP3 player as I always use - sounded fine to me. Okay, the ship is a bit messed up so if I did sound design for this I'd probably intentionally skew the normal sounds of the Liberator. But I don't listen in a neutral sound environment, as I listen while driving down the freeway on my earbuds, so I don't get like perfect sound resolution.
Okay, voice acting is something that BF fans have had to get used to, considering the actors are so much older now in most of their ranges. Darrow's voice is a little gruff at times, but it still sounds like Avon to me. Now Pacey, I've never been able to hang his voice to what I remember him as Tarrant, but I've gotten used to how he sounds on these. Still, there are times that he sounds to me more like Peter Purves (Steven Taylor). But it doesn't really take me out of the story.

I actually think Pacey has progressed in Restoration now i know its definitely Tarrant there is a more youthful quality appearing in his voice so restoration has been my favourite of the sets to date.

There’s a horror movie called Alien? That’s really offensive. No wonder everyone keeps invading you.

Two stories in and I'm really enjoying it. I'm not digging the deviations from canon: it's the second time they've stolen/ borrowed a ship to get them to the action because the Liberator is otherwise engaged which is not something that happened EVER in the TV series. However I am enjoying the other deviation from canon being that we get a decent payoff from cliffhangers.

Finished. Terrific final episode and an OK penultimate episode. The real standout for me, though, was the incidental music. It was fantastic: I know that previous stories have tried to capture the "feel" of Dudley Simpson's work but this set seemed to just go for broke and just make what felt to be thematically appropriate "in the style" of Dudley. Loved it.

I think Darrow very much sounds himself here, and I do think it's something to do with the way some of the audio engineering comes across on my electronics. Finishing up this set, I tried applying the graphic equalizer in my player and the tiniest tweak on the low end made an unusually large difference, although point taken about how some of this is going to sound a certain way because of the situations in the story. Finished the set now and have ended up really impressed with it. Really liked how well they made things work around the premise of the Liberator's situation, I thought being right under the President's nose like that was wonderfully suspenseful. Had an LOL moment or two thinking that Tarrant was starting to sound a bit like Villa, right before someone in the story pointed it out. :-)

Hey Michael - just a question in response to the link you posted above. Is your YT page the go-to place for your podcasts now? I noticed a heck of a lot more recent posts there, than on your tin-dog.co.uk/libsyn page which is my bookmark for you.

I don't know whether it is because I've had to wait until pay-day to purchase this - as opposed to pre-ordering like usual - but I found myself really enjoying being among the crew again, and the machinations of Damage Control. Trevor Baxendale has written some corkers in the past. I remember really enjoying (the Doctor Who story) Something Inside hugely and not understanding why it wasn't better thought of, for example.
I wasn't sure John Ainsworth was playing to the strengths of the show if the previous Crossfire was any example. Despite his excellent work on The Way Ahead, I found his Crossfire rather dull, barring a few exceptions. Obviously one can't judge Restoration from one episode, but this is great. The whole series 3 team together, including the most powerful team-member of all, The Liberator. Possibly the most magnificent space ship on TV sci-fi in my view, it is good to see the poor old thing playing such a major part in this. Interesting too is Tarrant's crumbling state of mind, and the impact that has on everyone else. I liked Zeera Voss too, twice on the brink of uttering an expletive. The excellent doomy musical score by Simon Power or David Roocroft adds a great sense of apocalyptic dread to proceedings. Excellent.
With the very sad loss of Jacqueline Pearce, it will be interesting to see what the future has in store for this range. My idea would be to bring back Travis (his dispatch in Star One was very anti-climactic) - but not just one. Bring back both of the blighters using some imaginative reasoning, and have them disliking each other just as much as the Liberator crew often do. Just an idea, and who the heck am I, after all?
Anyway - this is a really strong start for this series. I look forward to hearing The Hunted by Iain McLaughlin very soon.

The Hunted by Iain McLaughlin contains some snappy dialogue between Avon and Vila. At times, Vila threatened to become tiresome in the last story, but here he is more of a 'sparring partner' rather than someone who whinges.
This is a terrific face-off between alleged good and alleged evil, stretched over an entire episode. It's a big ask for the writer to keep the tension going throughout, but it works for the most part. You know you're in for a fun ride when poor Vila is depending on Avon to keep him alive. Rather like the television episode Orbit, there are moments where, if you didn't know better, keeping Vila alive isn't one of Avon's priorities. If you didn't know better.

Figurehead by Scott Harrison is a fairly standard story, although it is good to hear Tarrant and take centre stage. Is Tarrant in love with Vila? He mentions him at every turn during the first few minutes of the story. There's lots of chatter, much of it witty, but its somewhat light on the tension, like a lot of Crossfire. It is played with gusto by the cast - Stephen Pacey is on very good form - but I would rate it 'solid' rather than 'spectacular.'

Abandon Ship by Steve Lyons.
Continuing to build up the events in the television episode Terminus, the poor old fracturing Liberator is central to the drama once again. It is always good to hear veteran BF regular Ian Brooker back again, and here he is great as Ozaban. Orac and Orzaban's relationship is terrific to listen to; two tetchy characters putting up with each other, hiding a far more sinister truth beneath. Poor Vila, slipping off blatantly to have a skin-full in a morose cloud of self-pity as Cally despairs. Some great character-fuelled writing from Steve Lyons - as the Liberator breaks down further, so does its crew. Distrust piled upon distrust. An excellent way to end this box-set.

The opening themes tunes of diary of river song and UNIT are way too loud and I'm constantly turning the volume down during the opening theme tunes. And yes some of the characters voices are too low in volume and others are too loud. I haven't had this problem the blakes 7 though. B7 is recorded really well. So my solution is to apply Replay gain across the files and this makes the volume level far more consistent to. I use Android devices so audio players use Replaygain. For Apple they refer to it as 'Sound Check'. Hope this makes sense.

I noticed a heck of a lot more recent posts there, than on your tin-dog.co.uk/libsyn page which is my bookmark for you. No... well... Yes... Basically I upload my podcasts asap to my feed and to youtube Then I reschedule the podcasts to go out Wednesday and Sunday. Post direct links to the files here and on twitter. So if you follow my on yt or twitter you may get reviews a week earlier than just the rss feed. However everything is on the rss feed eventually. You see BF don't often feature a dejayed review on their site.

So, Avon will be absent from the conclusion of this latest series, but they're continuing with a revised version. I can't think of a more agreeable way of doing things. And after that, I'm guessing a return to Liberator Chronicles narrations.

It's a sensitive issue, of course. I'm a little baffled that some on Facebook are actually recommending Avon be recast!
