I've just finished the second season of this amazing show (even though it's nothing like the novels). The characters, the motivations, the storylines... it's all so gripping! And I need more (just like when I finished the first season). That's why the news that BBC America hadn't renewed the series a few months ago, hit me pretty hard, as I thought it was a show that had managed to amass considerable success. But then again, the budget might be too much. The series is co-produced by Netflix, who haven't publicly made a decision about the show's future, so there's still hope.
But in case the series is definitely cancelled, would you guys want an eventual continuation on audio by BF? I think it's a property that's straight up BF's alley, and they could even adapt the novels in this new world. Samuel Barnett is already working with them, so he wouldn't be much of a problem. I think Elijah Wood wouldn't be much difficult either, provided there's interesting content (and he's done voice work and audiobooks before, so I don't think he'd have a problem with that). Perhaps some of the other cast would be more difficult to get hold of, but they can be worked around (the season two finale leaves it open enough for them to be on small cases, so something not too dissimilar to the Torchwood monthly releases would be possible). Actually, the Torchwood model I think would be perfect; start with a few of these monthly releases with short but interesting cases (and with BF's roster of writers that is a given) and build up to a third season divided in a few boxsets, and even some special releases, like novels adaptations, as I said before. One thing they have to make sure, though, is that they have to involve Max Landis in the development of this continuation, perhaps even more so than RTD is with Torchwood, as the storylines here aren't finished, and I can see really interesting developments in the pipeline from what was teased at the end of the second season. And, that would mean Max Landis working with BF which could lead to a possible Max Landis Doctor Who adventure, which is something I've been dying to see for a few years now.
Thoughts? Did you enjoy the series?

Haven't seen this version, but was disappointed the last time The BBC failed to commission an on going series based on the same books. I think it's a great set of stories and characters, and it baffles me that it seems not to get traction with BBC executives.
As to whether BF could or would pick this up, I think it unlikely, not because they might not want to, but because the rights issues with all the different parties would be I expect problematic and expensive, I think BF would have a far greater chance of doing their own adaptation of the novels, than of taking on a project with this many licensees and fingers in it.

Yeah, I was thinking about who they'd have to persuade to get the license and if it would be something that'd be worth it for them. Problem is this series doesn't have any-spin-off media, not even merch, now that I think about it, so we don't have any precedents to form an informed guess of how difficult or easy it would be. Perhaps it's an indication that they are not interested at all in licensing? Who knows... Another option for an audio continuation could be perhaps Audible, as it's got a broader market than Big Finish and it's based in the US, and they seem to be investing more in original audiodramas, instead of audiobooks, nowadays, what with the X Files and their original dramas series. Oh, well, one can dream.

Has anybody ever seen the "Dirk" play that James Goss and Arvind Ethan David put together when they were young? Because on the basis of this TV show, David and the other TV producers have no understanding of Douglas Adams's writing AT ALL - but, by God, they still come up with something absolutely true-blue brilliant.
I hated the first episode. I was *so* disappointed. And yet.... and yet, I wanted to understand what the hell was going on. I ended up watching the final three episodes of that first series in a single sitting, and I never do that.
I'd love to see BF tackle either of the television series, but whereas if they did the UK series I would probably wait till it turned up in a sale, I think the US series I would pre-order. That being said, would they need to work with Dirk Maggs for audio Douglas Adams material? (Not sure Audible would be interested, aren't they just mostly adapting comics? And while the Dirk-as-David-Tennant-with-weird-hair comics do actually tie into the TV series as a prequel, I'm not sure they lend themselves to adaptation).

I didn't know there were comics! Thank you for that! I think that'll satiate my thirst for now I haven't seen any of the other adaptations, and tbh, I haven't read the books either (I want to finish the Hitchhiker ones first), but I'll make sure I do if I get the opportunity.

I've only seen one episode, but I doubt Big Finish would want it. Dirk Gently is too similar to the Doctor, therefore I think a different audio drama company would pick up the rights if any.

I absolutely loved the first series but haven't had a chance to watch the second yet.
Whilst I'd love to see a BF 'version', I also doubt it's going to happen either...

I love the show, but if we were getting a Dirk Gently audio series continuation, I'd like to see some original stories (or something based off the bits of Salmon of Doubt Adams finished) from Dirk Maggs and Henry Enfield.

I'd rather have a sequel to the Stephen Mangan version myself.

There's quite a list of women who say he sexually asaulted and harrased them - I think that'll be the end of him in the limelight for a good long while, and given Movie Fights got rid of Andy Signore for offences of the same nature, he won't be back there either.

I'd never heard of the dude before, so I googled, 95% of all results were about him and sexual assault or knock on effects of the allegations.

It's sometimes fun but often quite woeful depending on guests - when they fill their panels with people who think cinema was invented by George Lucas and Steven Spielberg and proclaim every comic book movie "the best yet!"....it's not for me.

I'm really glad I saw it in the first place but I wholeheartedly agree. Also, the allegations seem to be connected to everything from it's lack of season 2 promotion to not getting a season 3. Sadly it's likely too connected to Landis to have any future. But maybe a more traditional Dirk Gently still with Barnett could be possible. If Dirk is supposed to be like the Doctor Barnett is more Matt Smith than Tom Baker but nothing says they can't do audiobooks. Maybe Barnett does some multicast audiobooks or even novel adaptations. Perhaps in a few years we will start getting some major new non harassing talent in the media industry. In the meantime Make Mine Big Finish.
