Finished Volume 1 earlier today and loved every minute of it. I think Ever After Happy and Grel Invasion were the strongest of this first Volume and the entire Set has been good on not being too continuity heavy.
Also love the little we can’t mention the Doctor or Daleks but we’re going to do it anyway.

1.1 Ever After Happy
Surely to be aka 'The Two Bennys'! (Bennies??) Emily Laing is excellent as young Benny and I was easily able to believe I was hearing two ages of the same person. I wondered how this episode would work out, being the one with the most restricted setting, but the timey-wimey plot was really good and the connection between the Bennys very well done, with lots of humour and poignant moments too. And discoveries to make and aliens to fight off!
And I loved it when Benny Senior came over all Seventh Doctor and started waffling on about Time and threads and stuff and Benny Junior (unimpressed by impressive-sounding waffle as Benny always isn't!) just replied 'You don't know what you're doing, do you?'

We have a general convention that release-specific threads should be expected to contain SOR - 'spoilers on release', so we can discuss / review openly without fighting with spoiler tags. (Unlike on the 'What are you listening to' threads.) The thread header usually says so, but not always. Perhaps Whovitt or a Mod could add the SOR 'warning' to this thread header please? Ta. EDIT: The Hand of Whovitt has been at work I think! Cheers.

Is it worth listening to these sets if I’m not well-versed in Benny? I’ve listened to a few of her Doctor Who audios but nothing from her own series.

I definitely would i am new apart from the Bennie Novel adaptations. The Unbound stories are a definite listen to really warm to her and especially her and David Warner. Then slip back to her first series on audio. I took advantage of the most recent sale to indulge in her original series of adventures and have been entertained by what i have heard. The new box sets are set in different time zones and are worth hearing give you a taster no prior knowledge required IMO

Now that we have had a chance to listen .... Suggested chronological placements, anyone? Well I think Grel Invasion is meant to be between Death to the Daleks and The Grel Escape according to the interviews. Ever After Happy is sometime when Benny is at the Braxiatel Collection. Braxiatel in Love I feel is later in the single releases. I’m still listening to Volume 2 as I’ve still got a life to live but Every Dark Thing I think is sometime before New Adventures Volume 1. Also I’ve only heard the New Adventures sets, the novel adaptations, and the first series of a single releases so take my placements with a grain of salt.

Well the comments about this on YouTube and Facebook are horrendous.
It appears people have come to the conclusion that this is yet another SJW pandering spinoff with “lots of female characters” and a “token black woman” and that BF are running out of ideas.
And apparently Benny is some irrelevant character who never made an impact on “whostory” which is why River is better.
So that’s what we’re dealing with here. People who run their mouths off without knowing the most basic knowledge of what they’re actually talking about.

I had a problem with Bernice originally and only read a handful of Novels it was a post by FANTASTICALICE i wish i could find it that really redeemed the characters of River and Bernice for me.They are two entirely different characters and River is far far superior in BF than in the TV show, the tv show lays the groundwork but BF allow the character to breathe. Bernice for me on audio is simply wonderful and it was her collaboration with David Warners Doctor that cemented our audio relationship sometimes you hear something and the character clicks doesn’t it? so for me there is room in the Whoniverse for both

People who run their mouths off without knowing the most basic knowledge of what they’re actually talking about. The correct explanation for all that is the one given by Gene Wilder as 'Jim' in 'Blazing Saddles' - 'They're morons!'
I've watched River from the start on TV and recently discovered her (even better) on BF while I found Benny through the outstanding New Adventures boxsets and I'm now working backwards through the layers of her rich history (as she would on a dig, but no trowel required for me!)
Benny and River are both excellent characters, but totally different people. True, they are both female Professors of Archaeology with close ties to the Doctor and a habit of finding themselves in seriously dangerous situations, and they are both highly intelligent (goes with the job really) and self-reliant (ditto) but beyond that they couldn't be more different. Only one of them is a sociopathic child of the TARDIS with highly flexible morals and married to the Doctor who she was intended to kill. That's quite unusual and it does sort of inform the rest of her life.
If you ask me, BF will 'run out of ideas' around the time the sun goes cold and not before.

Silly comments on social media seems to just be a given now. I grew up in the 90s with the VNAs and Benny WAS Doctor Who for most of us. She was cool, funny, badass and streetwise. She's the kind of character franchises try artificially to create - well, Benny was there over a quarter century ago in Who. And if you like to treat the VNAs as canon...i The Dying Days she was *close* to The Doctor before River or Rose.

Osgood if it makes you feel any better I looked into that really bad comment and I’m pretty sure that’s just a troll and not an actual fan. I can understand people who don’t know Benny as let’s be honest if you just watch the tv series you’ve never heard of her.

And funny as the final story is a really good look at the political climate that creates the SJW and whatever I guess the right wing version would be.
