Haven't listened to this for a couple of years, but just remembered how much I enjoyed BBC's dramatisation of 'Brightonomicon' starring David Warner, Andy Serkis, Rupert Degas, Mark Wing-Davey, Martin Jarvis.......... It's no longer available on Audible, but you can get it here --> spokenworldaudio.biz/product/the-brightonomicon/ and listen to a sample of it. I've only read one other Robert Rankin book, but wish more stories were adapted into audio dramas. Aye Big Finish, go on

I am opposite, I really hated it.....I bought it upon release and after four goes only ever got 2/3 of the way through.
And those puppet heads on the cover are the stuff of nightmares.....
The story is all over the place and jumps and bumps about without making much sense or merit.
Neither funny nor entertaining, now I know there are many fans of rankins work, and I remember reading chocolate bunnies.....and enjoying it, but this is not for me or others as cd was passed about without anyone finishing it.
I know we are all different but this I one release I could not recommend.

Loved when it came out, I know one of the people who adapted it (Elliot Stein) so was very interested in hearing it when it came out, and was very pleased with it, it's zany for sure.
It wasn't done for or by the BBC, I didn't know it was ever on the BBC.
My only issue with the audio play was that the recording I purchased from AudioGo was of disappointing quality, not just a low but count, but brief missing sections, fade outs and other artefacts.

Though after reading your comments I do hope the story is as good as I remember. And agree the front cover is definitely attention grabbing, though I do actually like it.

Yeah you're right. Re-reading the product description it does indeed say 'commissioned by BBC audiobooks', rather than produced by them. And the front cover on Spokenword Audio is different to my version, there is says "As heard on Radio 4xtra", but mine is the same as this --> It's not currently available, but here's a listing on BBC's iPlayer Radio --> www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b00d4z0zShame they didn't go on and adapt more, do you know why not?

I don't, I've not actually been in touch with Elliot for quite some time now, at the time up was up and coming he was really quite excited by it and was happy with the work he did on it. My guess, and it's nothing more than that, would be it wasn't a huge commercial success, had it been I'm sure more would have followed.

Finished listening to this yesterday and enjoyed it as much as the first time. The story is rather bizarre, random, and unexpected. A straightforward plot it has not. As Robert Rankin says he writes ‘far fetched fiction’, which is a good description of Brightonomicon. It isn’t perfect, and a few parts I couldn’t keep up with the imaginative storyline, but it did keep me entertained and engaged during each of the thirteen episodes. There’s also a few extras at the end, interviews with Michael Fenton-Stevens, Robert Rankin and confab from Neil Gardner, the main driving-force behind this project. He produced, directed, edited and co-wrote it, and during the RR interview we were told Brightonomicon took 12 years from inception to being released. Maybe that’s why no further Robert Rankin books have been adapted since. Neil Gardner is currently the Managing Director of Ladbroke Audio www.ladbrokeaudio.com/about-us/ which also owns spokenworldaudio.biz/about-us/And he’s also worked on many Big Finish productions www.ladbrokeaudio.com/big-finish-productions/ Most recently Cicero Series 1 www.bigfinish.com/releases/v/cicero-series-01-1777/technical_details It’s a small world.

I enjoyed this. I got it on CD some years back, available in Australia from the ABC and on special to clear out old stock that was cluttering up the warehouse. It's clever and well-made, although I'm not a huge fan of comedy, this was luckily hanging out more towards the black comedy side. If you can hear it, give it a go!
