It seems reasonable that such a thing will happen, even it only a few starring John Barrowman as Jack Harkness. Thoughts? I'd certainly consider whatever Nine stories we are given (Eccleston is a very underrated, and interesting doctor imo) , but I can't help but feel some fans (particularly new listeners who are likely to be brought on by the full casts of the River, Tennant audios etc) could feel short changed with mere narrated audiobooks or stories without 9 in a major role, and some might read it as insulting to Eccleston's personal position-I liked the 9th Doctor alot, and although I'd love to see him reprise the role I respect Eccleston's desire (as a character actor with a family to provide for) to distance himself from the franchise (after the apparently very chaotic and stressful production that was Series One) and move on to other projects. That's not to say I don't like the supporting characters of his tenure, I just feel that personally, without the fantastic man himself something would feel sadly lacking, my desire for new 9th Doctor stories is largely tied up with my hopes to see Eccleston reprise the role, as I understand it Big Finish were very hesitant to do many stories with the fourth Doctor prior to Baker's return, as a sign of respect/hope that he might change his mind, I'm sorta hopeful that the same may hold true of Eccleston. So yeah, I'm certainly open to it, depending on the storylines, but I think it could end up being a disappointment or taken the wrong way by some listeners depending on how soon they are released and how they are marketed.

I'm the opposite. I don't think you need Christopher Eccleston for 9th Doctor stories so long as you have Billie Piper (most importantly out of any of the supporting cast) for the Companion Chronicles. Billie Piper often outshone Christopher Eccleston IMO anyway and the part of the Doctor never totally felt right for him bar a few excellent stand-out moments (his anger at the Dalek in Dalek, 'Rose, I'm coming for you' cliffhanger for Bad Wolf...). That said, I would love to see him return to the role (however unlikely it may be).

That's one of the reasons I'm keen for Eccleston to reprise the role, the storylines for Series 1 were somewhat uneven, and by his own admission Eccleston felt he oversold the comedy (which I'd agree with), but i.m.o Eccleston's traumatized Doctor was one of the more interesting incarnations, and when Eccleston had actually settled into the role he'd already left (I think part of the issue was Eccleston's 'wounded angry bloke from the north' being so different to his immediate predecessors, I felt McGann and Hurt slotted into straight away despite their limited screentime because they sounded and acted more generically doctorish to an extent) , I think he barely scratched the surface of what he could do with the character, excelling in the darker character driven stuff I'd like to see what he would do with more stories written to his strengths, and a 'healing of the soul' character arc that takes longer to unfold.

I actually thought the opposite - that he undersold the comedy. He was brilliant at the 'Time Lord rage' scenes though.

Would be interesting if that universe's Doctor was a ruthless dictator. Back when this was on TV I wondered if they might encounter a Doctor who never left the timelords played by Peter Davison who is much older than his 5th Doctor incarnation in our universe and wears Timelord robes rather than his trademark cricket kit. Although he has a Tardis it still has its chameleon circuit. Perhaps he is travelling with a small group of students to observe other lesser civilisations.

And would calling his three young students Tegal, Nyra and Tourlaric be too much?!

That's probably the main reason I'd like for him to revisit the Ninth Doctor, is because just as everything was really starting to click, his TV tenure expired. I'm not sure that has very much to do with his performance as opposed to just some of us viewers needing that time for adjustment not only to a slightly different sort of Doctor, but also to a rather different series in general. However, at least for me, before everything really started to work out, it was the supporting cast who really helped carry things, so I think I'd be particularly keen for there to be Companion Chronicles with Billie or Noel or John or whomever. I also think it would be a real shame for there to be a "rule" that they can't do audios unless or until Christopher signs on. A good point, if for no other reason that I'm still inclined to feel shortchanged by BBC DW audios myself. I think appreciation of the Companion Chronicles themselves benefits from context, though. I know they're easy to underappreciate for lack of Doctors or fuller cast, but that is after all exactly what they are is an opportunity for supporting cast to enjoy the spotlight and flex their abilities as storytellers. If I simply keep that in mind, I can't really think of any significant disappointment with any that I've heard - quite the contrary, they are each a treasure. The rest of it I'm sure I know nothing about - hopefully Big Finish would be a buffer between Christopher and anyone involved with DW that he might clashed with previously, at least. Personally I just keep hoping it will strike him as most rewarding as a performer to reprise a role that simply cannot be performed by anyone else - sure there are other Doctors, but nobody but Christoper can be the Ninth Doctor.

Personally I just keep hoping it will strike him as most rewarding as a performer to reprise a role that simply cannot be performed by anyone else - sure there are other Doctors, but nobody but Christoper can be the Ninth Doctor. Eccleston was my first 'proper' doctor (or at least the earliest I can remember watching in great detail-I had seen at least one of the Peter Cushing Films, and a few clips and bits from Classic Who so I was aware of it at least) as as a young teenager at the time I was thoroughly enthralled with the show from the first moments of Rose, and had not trouble thinking of him as the Doctor. I think most of my (relatively minor overall) concerns/issues with Eccleston's tenure have only really developed in retrospect with the passage of time (I haven't watched any of his episodes in several years either), but in some ways I still think Eccleston's doctor does feel like a missing link of sorts and a 'mould breaker' in the pantheon of doctors, so for me personally something would just feel missing if the man/doctor himself wasn't involved in a big way. (I will confess that I have listened to a grand total of...two companion chronicles so far, so part of this is perhaps uniformed bias) Jackie, Rose, Mickey and Jack are all likeable characters, with many more stories to tell, but I'm not completely convinced there's any of thing of great interest you could do with them as stand alone characters within the expanse/canon of Nine's timeline and adventures, Rose for instance grows and changes from a wide eyed teenage tearway to a confident sidekick due to the Doctor showing her the wonders of the universe, I'm not so sure personally it would be as interesting seeing this growth largely from her own perspective, and it's nothing you couldn't do in 10th Doctor companion chronicles or a Rose spin off, as I said above, I'd certainly be pleased with more 9th Doctor stories, but companion chronicles just wouldn't excite me as much as ones with the Doctor front and center, for me the 9th Doctor remains one of the more interesting, mysterious and haunted incarnations, and if Eccleston was ever persuaded to reprise the role, exploring this inner strife in more detail would be more intriguing to me than more stories with the supporting characters. Rose, Jack etc helped carry his tenure certainly, but Eccleston's doc guided and informed it and made it the 'fantastic!' series it was. I'm certainly open to the idea though.

I'm more interested in seeing Companion Chronicles for the Tenth Doctor companions/allies (a lot of potential to explore their backgrounds or relationship to the Doctor), but I also wouldn't mind maybe seeing a Harriet Jones story or a Companion Chronicle with Rose set in the early days of her travels with the Ninth Doctor when she's not yet used to his personality.

I never thought someone could convince me that a Rose miniseries set on Pete's World would be a great idea, but there it is. That doesn't even have to be in CC format. Just Billie Piper and a new unbound-style Doctor. Or as someone suggested above, an old version of Peter Davison or Sylvester or someone, maybe still in exile, maybe the Prime Minister of the Time Lords. Who knows.

I thought the Companion Chronicles just stopped once they get hold of the Doctors they feature. One of the best CC's not only features a companion who has an active Doctor, but also has a Doctor acting in it. Peri and the Piscon Paradox. Whilst CC's do indeed allow companions to tell stories when their Doctors are not around, what they mostly do, is tell a story from the companions POV and allow the companion to be the main character around which the story happens.
