'The Rescue' has an obvious plot (total list of suspects: Bennett ) but I still like it. (And aww, poor Sandy!)
Played almost live, as theatre, the effects (including falls, rock-falls and explosions) also had to be produced live, as on stage – and for me it works, thanks to the excellence of Raymond Cusick’s designs, Christopher Barry’s direction, evocative ‘space’ music re-used from ‘The Daleks’ and great lighting meaning the Dido Hall of Judgment looks impressive on a low budget.
And the really important part of the story is the part everyone now knows, that Vicki joins the Doctor, Barbara and Ian on their travels.
“All roads lead to Rome”, as they say - and to a fantastic story too…

The Rescue. Perfectly serviceable slice of Who. Some nice character interactions to introduce Vicki. The Doctor's confrontation with Koquillion is quite good too, till the two Dido people pop up out of nowhere to conveniently wrap it all up that is.
Oh and the Twitch chat's reaction to Barbara annihilating Vicki's pet was quite funny.

The Romans. Second time I've seen it and still just as delightful. Interesting fitting it with all the prior stories, this is really the beginning of the Doctor as a mischievous adventurer which would one day be the 'mad man with the box'. Perhaps no longer having the responsibility of Susan causes him to take more risks?
And of course the Twitch chat didn't miss a beat with some of inferences to be made about why Ian and Barbara are quite so jolly in some scenes.

'The Romans' is one of my favourite Hartnell-era stories, a mixture of the serious and the seriously funny.
History is all over the place in Dennis Spooner’s fabulous script (in more ways than one) but you can change history if you’re a ‘Doctor Who’ writer! In one of the very best moments, the Doctor inspires (and incinerates!) Nero’s plans to give Rome a drastic makeover, with perfect comic timing. And I think it was deliberate, the Doctor getting them out of trouble by fulfilling the history he already knew, as he would later do in 'The Myth Makers'. Although he denies it to Vicki, he does seem very pleased with himself later on!
Christopher Barry’s direction and the cast’s wonderful performances enable the story to flip from comedy to drama and back again, over and over, and their comic timing is spot-on, recorded in ‘as-live’ conditions as if on stage – very difficult to do (especially the palace chase scenes in episode 3) and great fun to watch.
A gem of the classical world of ‘Doctor Who’ and a treat for fans of William Hartnell, perfect as the imperious First Doctor and equally brilliant at playing him for comedy; Primus Doctor comicus maxime!

Another one I've never seen coming up tonight - 'The Space Museum'. It doesn't have the best reputation (a bit dull, I've been told) but we'll see! And it's been a very long time since I saw 'The Chase' - popcorn required for that one I think, not the deepest plot but not dull! One of my Hartnell-era favourites to begin with - 'The Web Planet'.
EDIT: And so they're showing us 'An Unearthly Child' again! I suppose it's traditional to repeat it a few days later in case people missed it - they did that in 1963 too... EDIT2: And now it's 'Planet of Giants' again lol! But they're fixing it!
EDIT3: Right, looks like that's it for the evening. The invasion of Earth is underway (again). Daleks are the masters of Twitch.

For some it flies like a moth, for others it bites like an ant. Astonishingly daring, utterly alien and possibly alienating - but unique, made when retakes and ‘cuts’ were very expensive and this production overran in time or budget practically every week, as it tried the almost impossible, made almost ‘as-live’ with an ultra-theatrical style.
I love 'The Web Planet', with its depiction of a complete alien ecosystem from rocks to people - and what people! The Menoptera are a splendid creation – and sometimes, magnificently, they actually fly! Because we can’t see the actors’ faces, we have to listen and watch more carefully, but they are full individuals. Their characters are expressed through speech and movement and very well too, though I’ll admit it’s not what would now be called ‘accessible’ television!
You may feel differently (it’s that kind of production) but in my opinion, author Bill Strutton, producer Verity Lambert, Richard Martin and their team created a truly unique classic of early ‘Doctor Who’ and (as Prapillus says of the TARDIS crew) “Their deeds shall be sung in the Temples of Light” – well, they will be by me anyway!

Tuned in just in time to catch the beginning of the re-run, haven't seen any of The Web Planet, Space Museum or The Chase before.

The Web Planet. The ambition here is very admirable, the production just about pulls it off with a few bumps along the way (episode 3's cliffhanger is bizarre-and the reprise includes a crew member, presumably, laughing, the vaseline on the camera lens makes it more difficult to watch). It is a slower one, and the Menoptera can be a bit weird (what is going on with their arms, why do we they start screaming 'Zarbiii' whilst attacking one?) but not a bad way to pass a few hours.

The Space Museum. Better than it's reputation had led me to expect. The intriguing first episode sets up an interesting premise that does fall into the background a little. There are some nice scenes in the rest of it: the Doctor's interrogation, Ian talking down and then fighting the two soldiers. Meanwhile Vicki meets the most useless rebels in Doctor Who history (did they seriously never consider reprogramming that computer before?), but they're the only major weakness of the story. It's not the greatest story ever, but not too shabby.

The Space Museum
Much better than I was expecting - in fact the first episode is brilliant with the time paradox and that shocker when the TARDIS crew catch sight of themselves. The threat of the known future for the Doctor and his friends is a great plot device which works well though the whole story.
The 'youth revolution' theme was very 1960s (though more guns than peace and love!) and Vicki is excellent (and Ian was a Commando on his National Service, I know it!) Good message too: that you can change your own future by helping other people to change theirs.
(I especially enjoyed the Doctor's face-off with the Govenor! 'How did you get here?' Thought image says: by penny-farthing bicycle You don't outsmart the Doctor for long!)

The Chase. Well that was an odd one. A weird mix of adventures from desert planet of the fish people, to the worst American accents known to man, to a bizarre haunted house skit to very well done battle on Mechanus. The Daleks get some bizarre moments to match, coughing up sand, nodding their eye stalks, proclaiming themselves as exterminated and also apparently not having brakes and being vulnerable to water. Ian and Barbara's departure is nicely done, and the chat was immensely pleased to finally reach London 1965.
An weird story to be sure, but enjoyably so.

Noticed some oddities in the schedule ahead. They have The Web of Fear scheduled, but that's still missing Episode 3. Are they showing a photo-reconstruction?
Also there's some gaps on the horizon: Day of the Daleks, Resurrection of the Daleks, Planet of Fire, and Remembrance of the Daleks are missing. Why?

Guessing it must be the full episode length photo recon as on the DVD for 'Web of Fear' episode 3.
I would guess it will be the 15 minute photo recon from the VHS release for episodes 2 & 3 of 'The Ice Warriors' on the previous day, except that the timings for that day are right for 16 full-length episodes, so no idea really! If they're showing the animation for 'The Ice Warriors' why not for all the others??
They're only showing Dalek stories written by Terry Nation - 'Revelation of the Daleks' is another one missing.
It must be something to do with licensing; a pity, Day, Revelation and Remembrance are three Dalek favourites of mine and I'm sure they would be popular with a new audience.
And 'The Five Doctors' is also missing - which seems ridiculous. It's a fabulous story and they could have just cut the one brief Dalek scene, which is irrelevant to the rest of the story anyway.
As for 'Planet of Fire' - goodness knows. Kamelion wasn't that bad!

Not seen any of this on twitch. Is it doing well I wonder? They're all getting about 10,000 people watching when they get shown for the first time. Around 8,000ish for the repeats. For some reason there are still 2,000 people watching the stream right now though, even though all they'll be seeing is a still screen telling them to come back tomorrow.
