I'm a CD buyer and, having started a collection, cannot bear to stop now. I was always a CD buyer, and it was hard to stop collecting the Doctor Who Main Range on CD after so many releases. However, BF priced themselves out of the market with their per-order charge for international orders and their insistence on sending mail to Ireland by DHL (via Germany). So now I'm a downloads only customer and all of my BF CDs are in boxes so that I don't have to look at my lovely Main Range CD collection and cry that it's incomplete...
Via Germany to Ireland!?
That could be tricky from next year.

Via Germany to Ireland!? Sad But True... (Ask DHL why!)
That could be tricky from next year. That's BF's problem now... it shouldn't stop my downloads from downloading though!

DHL seems to have universally high shipping prices, even for domestic shipping. I thought the high prices for Big Finish were because I'm across the pond, but I recently ordered from a domestic company and the shipping was higher than the sale price for the item I was buying.

I myself bought far more of my CD's at a time when BF placed only a 50p per item 'postage contribution', which worked out well when buying £5 offers. Since this rose to £1.25 and weekend deals to £6, it feels like 50% off rather than 2/3 off the price. As I have most of what I want now bar new MR releases, my own easing off is not affected as much as it would have been four years back.
I don't know whether this has contributed to a slowdown of items even when on sale (MR 51-100 haven't sold out quite like 1 - 50 did IMHO), or simply that prices had to rise due to supply and demand, as if maybe sales had already tailed off. The outcome is nevertheless that DL purchases do become even more attractive as a consequence. Chicken and Egg scenario (what change came first?), or is it that CD's have become less profitable in smaller print runs, leading to some 'encouragement' to the rest of us who still want the physical but won't pay more for newer releases than before?
My supposition is that as a company, if they are shipping fewer packages with a contractor, then perhaps it leads to higher tariffs? No knowledge on my part, just speculation.

As it is, I stick with mostly downloads from Big Finish, as I get more bang from my buck. Especially since they increased shipping rates and added the "per order" charge.

On their FAQ page they suggest some international retailers for their products (last item on the FAQ page).

I believe Audity proposes (apologies if i am wrong) that if BF had a distribution facility whereby they either ship goods in bulk overseas themselves, or arrange manufacture overseas, as did BBC with their VHS releases, with a third party, then costs may be reduced, as storage facilities can be managed under licence within an existing specialist. It works for others? Funnily enough, i completed the gaps in my VHS collection years back by buying NTSC releases via US Amazon, with 2 bulk deliveries of the 20 or so I could no longer get in the UK....

When people have asked about that, I believe Big Finish staff have suggested using Alien Entertainment (list on the FAQ page I linked above). I remember Nick saying something in podcasts more than once about Alien Entertainment having a cooperative agreement of some sort with BF, though I may be misremembering.

If you are in the US and you don’t need the download, Alien Entertainment is Big Finish’s American distributor.

Can’t remember if I put my two penneth in here (I probably did) but my policy as of this moment is to get all the box sets on CD and then make my mind up with everything else. I don’t think I can justify paying that much for a box set and not get something physical in my hands at the end.

There is literally no where to buy BF cds in Australia. there is a massive pop culture shop based in Melbourne they have about 20 cds.. about AUST$45 each so that is completely out the question..
The per order charge I feel has definitely slowed down international orders. its about AUS $17+ extra on top of the p&h.
It is a catch 22 with them, so I don't completely blame them.. I am a big more selective with my purchases now, no more spending AUS$300-$400 at a time like I did back in the glory days of the almost daily 50% off $ales etc etc..
Slowly I will get there

Yeah, the per order charge is a huge deterrent to ordering physical product, for me.

I wonder if that's actually directly from Germany rather than via? I don't know where the details went but I think I dimly recall something about Big Finish's partner in Germany possibly having a hand in generating the physical product. They might also do some warehousing and/or dispatching for BF?

Yeah, some of my purchases are definitely mailed from Germany. I always wondered about that.
