Car players really don't mean much to me. Hell I still have cassette decks in my commuter cars, and I own a few of those old-school cassette adapters dangling out a headphone jack cord which you can plug into your media player. But listening to audio drama over the speakers does not appeal to me. So I use earbuds with my Sansa Clip+ and almost never even touch my car stereos.
This does mean, of course, I'm rather committed to download media. Now, I do own around 80 CD titles from BF, but only because that was the only way to get them at the time I purchased them, but for my listening, they all have been converted to MP3.
Now, my commuter cars (83 Camry, 85 Golf) are rather old, and not really that soundproof. If I was in some nice silent-cabin newer car, plugging into the onboard sound system might be a consideration.

I am getting a courtesy car tomorrow for a couple of days while mine is in for some repairs - asked for one with a CD player and told they don't have any. Aargh!!! But no doubt a sign of things to come. The last time I bought a new car (not personally, I buy them in work for sales reps) I was told that CD players are harder and harder to get. For me personally, once I can no longer get a car with a CD player I think that will be me moving over to download only. Never thought I'd be saying that, but there you have it. That is where I find myself. Although I am loathed to stop getting the CDs. As such I would like Big Finish to realise that getting the CDs will become more of a collector pursuit and the packaging will become even more important.

I never once used the CD player in my last car and was shocked that the car I bought last year had one. I just connect the iPod to the car and play everything from that.

Is it not illegal where you are to wear earbuds/phones........it is in the uk......you can wear one but not two......I was fined twice.....stupid but true......

I actually started to talk about the legality of earbuds, but then backspaced and deleted it. I have heard that certain U.S. states, municipalities, counties, etc have dropped the hammer on earbuds.
I don't know if any of that applies to me, if it does, well bugger-all, I still use them.

I drove last night after work to my PO BOX I have 1 package of cd's waiting for me. Plus 3 other packages. 1 more UK Book Depo, 1 x 10th ltd ed boxset from Big Finish plus the Vinyls from my mate's mate in UK... I was listening to "Cobwebs" in my car last night.. It has a cassette deck still (it's a 2007 model car I think).. PLUS I have 2 record players to play my vinyl.
Physical all the way. The only 2 digitals I have ever bought is the Davros one (can't remember the name) and 1 other (name escapes me too). All 500+ purchases are physical. As stated before when we sold our townhouse and bought a single story proper house, the back garage is big enough for 6 cars- it's being converted to hold all my physical product.

I am equally loath as well but if i cant listen to cds in the car for approx 7 hours per week whilst commuting, when will I listen to them? Listening on a cd player at home means staying in the same room not doing very much else, not interacting with my wife and children, etc. Even if I wanted to, I would never get peace to listen! I can at leasr listen to downloads whilst driving or out walking So for me, much as I might regret it, no cd player in the car will mean no cds. Even I am not addicted/daft enough to buy cds that will never ever be listened to.

I moved on from physical media quite a while ago. I used to love collecting CDs from my favorite bands and went a bit crazy tracking down various import singles just to get that one b-side or live version of a song. I enjoyed poring over the artwork and lyrics and immersing myself in the experience. Life changed, different priorities took precedence, and I don’t have as much time. My CD collection ended up in boxes in the attic. I could still enjoy the music that I'd ripped to my hard drives on my iPod...then moved to a Sansa Clip...then moved to my phone (Bluetooth in my car). Same with my DVDs and setting them up on a hard drive to stream to my television. In the meantime, I stopped buying new albums and switched to a pay streaming service. I can download the latest music for offline listening during travel. Same with DVDs. I recently went through a Marie Kondo-inspired clearout and was surprised to discover that nobody wanted to buy my old discs - even hardcore fans had no interest in what was once "collectible". The library got my CDs and DVDs. Today my Big Finish collection is entirely digital and enjoyed via the app. Things like The Legacy of Time packaging look gorgeous and are tempting, but I realize that my personal enjoyment would be for a few minutes before it ended up on a shelf (or in the attic again) and I’d just listen via the app. I had a lot of fun during the CD era, but the downloads changed everything. I really hope that the prices can remain manageable, but at least it looks the sales will continue to be frequent. I don’t mind waiting, because we live in such an oversaturated media environment that there’s no shortage of entertainment options for whatever spare moments I have. I’ll add that I’ve kept one key piece of BF physical media as it still “sparks joy” for me :

A part of me knows that is true of me as well, but having started collecting CDs and having a near complete collection it is hard to let go.
I heard a gambling addict talking on the radio a few years ago saying that whenever they were gambling they actually wanted to lose and run out of money because it would mean they would have to stop because they would have no other option but to stop and that was in fact the only way they could stop. I was reminded of that recently when I thought to myself that I wish BF would stop CDs and go download only - it would be a huge relief to me.
Maybe I have a problem ...

I certainly do - my problem is shelf space!

And this is not the first time it's come up. I will say in my defense, that my commute is out in the middle of friggin' nowhere. When there is bad weather, I don't tune in. When I drive elsewhere that actually has a modicrum of traffic, I turn off my player. I do know better!
Also, I would say, that if I was piping my MP3 player into my car stereo, to be able to enjoy it I would be blasting it out at levels of distraction totally on par with what one might expect with earbuds.

Thanks for the reassurance! Yeah, you've mentioned before that you drive out in the middle of nowhere. And glad you turn off the player when you need to pay attention to the road. Frankly, even with a speaker, not earbuds, I find that I stop attending to the story when a situation comes up on the road that I have to pay attention to. Then I have to go back and replay that part of the story cause I've totally missed what was going on in the story.

So I was looking at ordering the paternoster gang as a download, but found it was roughly the same price to order it on CD from Amazon.

Yeah some of the downloads seem to be a bit overpriced ... buy the CD from Amazon and make your own MP3/AAC/FLAC files, then sell the CD on eBay. That's probably the best value for money option with BF releases these days.

I have started to be practical about things.
I am 47, and my daughter has no real interest in Doctor Who. One day, all my things will go in a bin.
So... I have gone download of late.
