Meaning all Updates are solely down to the Original Poster (i.e. you)
Regards
mark687
I don't think, Mark and omega , that all the updates need to be in the initial post of a thread. It's fine for a variety of posters to post updates in a release thread as the updates become available. In fact, it's preferable, as it gives others a chance to post that information. Nor do all the release threads need to be started by one person. It would be nice to see more of a variety of forum members having the opportunity to start a new release thread. Just saying. Agreed. I personally find it more than a little off putting when I open up the forum and see so many new threads all started by one person. I would also argue that announcement threads and post release spoiler friendly threads should be two different venues of discussion.

I would also argue that announcement threads and post release spoiler friendly threads should be two different venues of discussion. I'm not sure that's necessary. It would get confusing to have two threads for each release, as I don't think people would be careful to differentiate between them. I'm am in favor of editing the lead post to say "spoilers start page x" or whatever page the spoilers are starting on. Personally, once a release is out, I don't open the thread about it till I've listened.

I think people are smart enough to tell the difference between a range or release announcement and a spoilers discussion thread.

I feel things seem to pretty much moderate themselves here at www.notthebigfinishforum.freeforums.net (aka The Divergent Universe). However I do agree that multiple threads on the same topic is particularly annoying & needs to stop. Also I feel people should stop cut & pasting text from Big Finish website. Just post a link!!! If you copy and paste anything directly from another internet site, and post it on another site, that is in fact plagiarism, Therfore it is illegal. So the mods should insist that this practice stops immediately,as you so rightly say ,just post a link. I call upon the mods to address this issue.

Aye, it would... if only a certain poster didn't continually start multiple threads about BF releases many months in advance we might be able to!
Personally I think post counts should be disabled as they only encourage multiple posts of the same news/links.

Short quoted excerpts including a link to the original are not plagiarism. We do remove longer quotes and discuss with the person who posted long quotes from elsewhere.

Ok then serious question How far in advance is advance and if we put time limits on info / Thread Creation does this stay an active Forum Community?

Ok then serious question How far in advance is advance and if we put time limits on info / Thread Creation does this stay an active Forum Community? Regards mark687 I don't get the correlation there. Why wouldn't it remain an active forum community because of asking people not to start threads 6 months out? That's a very niche part of the forum activity and very few actually do it. FWIW I don't really have an issue with that if it's one pertinent thread from announcement to release to discussion. It's the multiple threads thing with a plerotha of posts on the same thing, especially when phone browsing, that's the issue. But if we have one thread for each release it certainly doesn't bother me if it's created months ahead as that's somewhere the pertinent updates like casting etc can go.

Ok then serious question How far in advance is advance and if we put time limits on info / Thread Creation does this stay an active Forum Community? Regards mark687 Certainly it's useful to create a thread when BF announce the release date for a product. (Except for 'Jekyll and Hyde' which is clearly a special case. ) But it could be much earlier. There have been heavily-discussed releases where we knew (officially) that a release was coming, being recorded, featuring X, Y, and Z but it didn't have a release date. Obviously we need a thread to organise that product's discussion.
So I don't think there is a right time, it's up to us to use our common sense and I think that's what generally happens at the moment.
I don't create that many product threads but I've done a few when nobody else has; similarly I'm mostly an interested reader of 'news' in all its forms rather than a poster. But I'd be opposed to any kind of limits or controls on posting volumes; if someone behaves ridiculously the Mods can take action. And to be perfectly clear, I don't think anyone is behaving ridiculously.
My only comment to product thread creators in general would be: if you create a product thread, add a poll when the product is released because only the thread creator can do this and I like product polls. (I've forgotten to do this myself before now so this advice includes me. )

There is a problem with creating individual release threads when the release details are first announced - especially when it's many months in advance of the release - that no one in this thread has addressed yet:
We have had a situation in which a good number of releases were announced within close proximity of each other, and the release threads were posted in the forum (especially the BF Doctor Who board) many many months in advance of the actual release. The reason it was a problem was that these threads of one or two posts per thread (all posts by the thread initiator with no further discussion in the threads from others) crowded out actual active discussions that had been taking place at the time. Often, when an active thread is pushed to the second page, that basically kills the discussion. And we got a number of complaints about it.
This is the reason that we moderators had a discussion and agreed that placeholder threads of this type should not be allowed in the forum, especially when it appears a poster is making the post many months in advance of the release - not in order to discuss the upcoming release, but with the apparent sole purpose of being "first".
You may not agree with the placeholder rule, but there is a good reason for it.

You may not agree with the placeholder rule, but there is a good reason for it. For archivists and researchers, the word I've heard used to describe it is "archive panic" (taken from TVTropes). It's a legacy problem as well. It was (a squidge) before my time, but it was explained to me like this: Not too long ago, before everything became digitised, people used to use index cards. For post-internet forumgoers, in context, this was a piece of card or paper about the size of your hand stored with others like it in a plastic/metal box. Used in many places for data entry. Libraries, for instance, used them to keep track of books before digital cataloging became a thing. What sometimes happened was that a large number of index cards would be put in as "TBC". Blank with only a title or a reference number in preparation for an upcoming book. One or two was fine, but after a while, it became impossible to find the filled cards in amongst the empty placeholders. So much so, that when some of these books did arrive, they put in a new filled index card without knowing to take out the placeholder. And the boxes filled up with these things until it became necessary to perform a cull to remove them. Taking time away from other things the librarians could be doing. Same basic principle in the digital world as well (only online we can't use sticky colour tabs to differentiate). Honestly, though, I don't have any complaints for me personally. We're a very pleasant community. We put in the time and the effort to understand and be kind to one another, and I appreciate that greatly. Nearly... Oh, good grief, 4000 posts on (*bites finger*), I still very much enjoy being here.

As has been stated we are volunteers and have jobs and family obligations which take up the majority of our time.
Some of us (myself included) have been dealing with personal/family emergencies which have been keeping us from being as visible here as we might normally be. In my case this has meant I’ve spent chunks of the last three months driving all over the province to be with family, something which is likely to continue for some time. As a result, I frankly don’t have the energy to spend online. When I have, it has been primarily been spent looking over items which have been reported and offering my view and supporting decisions made by the rest of the team - this results in my almost never posting my views on releases of late.
Excuse my frustration, but rather than starting a thread complaining, report threads or posts that you feel are problematic - doing this rather than compounding the problem and baiting people as some have would be more constructive. If you have questions about something that has been reported, pm one or all of us and we will happily provide a response.

I apologize for frustrating you and for taking blame out on you guys, however I feel that this is more than appropriate to have a discussion as a forum. There has been nothing but polite replies and all parties have been constructive in my view. I also think that this is a discussion that was needed and benefited to having everyone able to participate. However, again I am sorry if I upset you or anyone else.

For Main Range, some variation on -- "DOCTOR WHO - MAIN RANGE » XX. YY". LIVE 34, Night Thoughts and Aliens Among Us all have access to that primary source in the same post. All which tend to roughly fall into that 150-250 word ballpark. It's not in an academic referencing style like MLA, APA or Chicago, but then neither is the blurb for The Waters of Amsterdam on Goodreads. The poster has acknowledged that their information has come from somewhere else.

Ok then serious question How far in advance is advance and if we put time limits on info / Thread Creation does this stay an active Forum Community? Regards mark687 I guess the issue is at what point does a release require a separate thread? For instance there is a MR 2018 discussion thread already, so does The Dispossessed (out in September) really require a separate thread yet, especially as that thread has only gained 3 replies so far, so is it really boosting forum activity? I can understand if a specific release has a major announcement about it that risks overtaking an overall discussion thread, such as the return of David Banks' Cyberleader or Iris Wildthyme, but if it doesn't, does it really require a specific thread yet? Another example is the 4DAs, where each story in Series 7B got its own thread but none of them have more than 3 replies. It just seems individual releases are sometimes getting threads for the sake of having a thread. Surely one overall 7B thread would cover this? This isn't intended as any kind of attack on anyone, it's just something I've been noticing over the months. Post is a bit more of a ramble then I'd originally intended, but I've typed it now might as well post.

Certainly over the gender politics issue, mods were not unbiased, and certainly let hurtful and derogatory post go unchecked and also participated in them. But on the whole they do a great job.........and am still grateful for setting up and maintaining this place. So how ever active or inactive there still awesome. Thanks for your comments. Glad you think we are doing a great job on the whole. Not sure what you are referring to regarding gender politics issues, though. If anything was reported, we acted on it or not, depending on whether it broke our rules. Also not sure which posts/mods you think were participating in hurtful/derogatory threads. I can't recall any specific reports on this, to be honest. Don’t worry it’s in the past........ but it’s along the lines of being dismissive of people’s views, and trying to change people’s views by branding them sexist etc..... but its all in the past, and they were strange times......... you guys are doing a brilliant job, although I have changed and don’t feel quite the same it’s no reflection on you guys......

Post is a bit more of a ramble then I'd originally intended, but I've typed it now might as well post. The Main Range 2018 thread could have been done in the updates thread. The way I rationalised the Fourth Doctor threads was that since the stories are available both individually and in a set, someone may want to only pick up one and not worry about spoilers for the others. Ditto for the Tenth Doctor Adventures Volume 2. These aren't standard, are specified in the threads and so far have only been done for the two Tenth Doctor sets and the Fourth Doctor starting this year. Stories only available in collected box sets I won't make individual threads for because all the stories are collected in the same release. I know on the Big Finish forum it was individual threads, but release threads as opposed to story threads regarding box sets is tidier.
