Good grief. So, in her first promo, Jodie Whittaker went for a walk in the woods. Now she goes for a walk in the city. Is that all the Doctor's going to do from now on? I mean, what was the point? Just showing us the characters doesn't tell us anything about them. No broadcast date. What, all joking aside, is the football-watching casual audience member supposed to take away from this? Futile. To those who say I'm not critical of Chibbs or S11, I'm of two minds here:
On a conceptual level, I get what they were going for: normal, everyday people getting brought into a world of mystery and adventure, creating a sense of intrigue. Obviously it's shot very well and the essence effect was pretty neat (though that's small stuff for a company like Double Negative). Plus, it just cool to see the characters finally in costume and some approximation of what their world is like. It is trying for a S1/S5 vibe there. Trying.

(2/2) On the other hand, I can't help but suspect something is missing here. I don't mean lines or more Jodie (though the last shot was poor, they should've given her a low angle to create more power and authority), but rather something is supposed to be here that would've really turned this into a hook for casuals. I would not be at all surprised to find out this was a casualty of the leak. The trance bits with Graham, Yasmin and Ryan feel like there should be something inserted there, like a cutaway to a moneyshot, as if a vision from the essence. i.e. Ryan sees Montgomery, Yasmin sees the witch burnings, Graham sees the black guy from the South African desert shoot who may or may not be a Sontaran etc. I can easily imagine an article on Digitalspy or something coming out down the road where this teaser was meant to have slivers of footage for a purpose like that, but the leak happened and the BBC clamped down on footage for anything other than SDCC leaving their grasp out of security fears, and LittleHawk (the marketers) didn't get it before then. The result: disposable and not strong enough.
Thankfully, we have a week straight of info and pics ahead so I imagine the people most annoyed will quickly forget this.

I don't know what they promised. The casual audience who tuned into the football won't know what was promised. All we know is what we saw.
"Tune into the World Cup Final this Sunday for the exclusive first look of new Doctor Who and friends." No mention of a Trailer.
I didn't mention a trailer. I just criticised the whatever-it-was because there was so very little to take away from it. I had no preconceptions.

They delivered exactly what they said they would. If people expected something else, that's on them surely?

Yes but if we go by the casual audience then this trailer could have provided many things - Remind them of the show thats been away for nearly seven months - Remind them of the jodie being the thirteenth doctor - Show the companions - People might have not know about Bradley walsh being it, thus having s known face show up would surely generate excitement I agree there wasnt much but for a first teaser it did exactly what it had too and it looks quite gorgeous ngl. For us it probably feels a tad underwhelming mainly becauae it feels like backpedalling after the leaked clip showing much more but thats not on the bbc

I thought it was quite good. The new Doctor is friendly and likes doing stupid things like nicking her friends' sausages and dippy eggs, refilling their pizza boxes after their weirdly enthusiastic friend eats it all, and replacing a naff newspaper with some classic Beano. The companions are all normal but with spidey-sense apparently. I'm also a very big fan of the fact that Ryan looks like he has NO IDEA what's going on in every press photo/clip we've been given.

I truly and honestly feel sorrow for you guys and galls. You deserved so much better than the rubbish teaser you got. I wouldn't be so dramatic about it, it was a fun little promo. If people are getting wound up about the lack of substantial footage then that's their own fault for reading too much into the press release. What exactly would you say made the teaser so "rubbish"?

I wouldn't bet on it.
It's been clear for a year now that Chibnall wants the next series to be a secret and that he's getting what he wants.
And how's that a bad thing anyway?

Also, is this Segun Akinola's first piece for the show?

More like a tease of a teaser. Not really much to comment on except how diverse the cast for the show is and that is to be celebrated.

Rest assured, Thursday’s comic con footage WILL be shared online So a more substantial teaser (assuming it is, could be just another tease I suppose) will be broadcast to attendees of SDCC (who are pretty much guaranteed to watch anyway) and then released online, rather than broadcast during one of the biggest sporting events of the year watched mainly by the general audience the show needs to bring onboard? Seems a odd way round imo.
